Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Johnstown Flood is an iconic tragedy in our nation ́s history, like the Chicago Fire, the sinking of the Titanic or the San Francisco earthquake. Many books have been written about the devastating 1889 Johnstown Flood, but few about the period before or after the flood: why did the town develop in such a remote valley and why didn ́t those who livied below the dangerous dam do something about it? My book, "The Bosses Club", answers those questions, but more importantly illuminates often overlooked circumstances that contributed to the origin for the catastrophe, like the Pennsylvania Canal and Pennsylvania Railroad. How their rapid development set the stage and led to the rivaly between Cambria Iron Company and Carnegie to dominate the burgeoning Steel industry.

He first perfected his skills with the Hells Angels, the Outlaws’ chief rival, before persuading thousands of disgruntled members from splintered Outlaws chapters to unite. Together, they formed a powerful criminal syndicate involved in extortion, contract murders, drugs and arms trafficking, money laundering and assassinations. Then a shocking medical diagnosis knocked James sideways, forcing him to face a new life on the outside of the organization he built, dodging snitches, federal law enforcement, and contract hits. In The Last Chicago Boss, James provides a startling and unprecedented expose into the inner workings of the Outlaw Nation from the unique perspective of its renowned leader, all brought to life through never-before-revealed interviews, police files, wiretaps, recordings, and trial transcripts.

Book 100 000 First Bosses

Download or read book 100 000 First Bosses written by Will Haskell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underdog story of Will Haskell, who became a Democratic state Senator in 2018 at age twenty-two—taking on an incumbent who had been undefeated for Haskell’s entire life and earning an endorsement from President Obama—is “an inspiring and wise blueprint for how you can change the world...get engaged and fight for the future you want” (Tammy Duckworth). President Obama left office with these parting words for Americans: “If you’re disappointed by your elected officials, grab a clipboard, get some signatures, and run for office yourself.” Twenty-two-year-old Will Haskell decided to do just that. If he ran for office and won, he would become the youngest state Senator in Connecticut history. For years, Haskell’s hometown had reelected the same politician who opposed passing paid family leave, fought increases in the minimum wage, and voted down expansions of voting rights. Haskell’s own vision for Connecticut’s future couldn’t be more different, and he couldn’t stand the idea of an uncontested election. In 2018, he would be a college grad looking for his first job. Why not state Senator? When Haskell kicks off his campaign in the spring of his senior year, he’s an unknown college kid facing a popular incumbent who’s been in office for over two decades—as long as Haskell’s been alive. Haskell’s campaign manager is his roommate, and his treasurer is his girlfriend’s mom. He doesn’t have any professional experience. But he does have a powerful message: there’s no minimum age to being on the right side of history. Six months later, Haskell’s shocking upset victory gives him a historic seat in the state Senate and the responsibility to serve the 100,000 constituents in his district. Like any first job, his first term as a legislator is filled with trial and error. Creating a program that funds free tuition at Connecticut’s community colleges—nice work. Falling asleep on the senate floor—needs improvement. In the tradition of Pete Buttigieg’s Shortest Way Home and Greta Thunberg’s No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference, this is “a call to action for young people to engage fully in public life at this critical moment for our democracy and our planet” (Jon Ossoff).

Book The Bosses Union

  • Author : Vilja Hulden
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2023-01-13
  • ISBN : 0252053885
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book The Bosses Union written by Vilja Hulden and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the opening of the twentieth century, labor strife repeatedly racked the nation. Union organization and collective bargaining briefly looked like a promising avenue to stability. But both employers and many middle-class observers remained wary of unions exercising independent power. Vilja Hulden reveals how this tension provided the opening for pro-business organizations to shift public attention from concerns about inequality and dangerous working conditions to a belief that unions trampled on an individual's right to work. Inventing the term closed shop, employers mounted what they called an open-shop campaign to undermine union demands that workers at unionized workplaces join the union. Employer organizations lobbied Congress to resist labor's proposals as tyrannical, brought court cases to taint labor's tactics as illegal, and influenced newspaper coverage of unions. While employers were not a monolith nor all-powerful, they generally agreed that unions were a nuisance. Employers successfully leveraged money and connections to create perceptions of organized labor that still echo in our discussions of worker rights.
