Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Borgias is the first volume of Celebrated Crimes series, written by Alexandre Dumas (father). The Borgias family became prominent during the Renaissance in Italy. They were from Valencia, the surname being a toponymic from Borja, then in the kingdom of Aragon, in Spain. The Borgias became prominent in ecclesiastical and political affairs in the 15th and 16th centuries, producing two popes: Alfons de Borja, who ruled as Pope Callixtus III during 1455-1458, and Rodrigo Lanzol Borgia, as Pope Alexander VI, during 1492-1503.Especially during the reign of Alexander VI, they were suspected of many crimes, including adultery, incest, simony, theft, bribery[citation needed], and murder (especially murder by arsenic poisoning). Because of their grasping for power, they made enemies of the Medici, the Sforza, and the Dominican friar Savonarola, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This antiquarian book contains Alexandre Dumas's historical work, "The Marquise de Brinvilliers". It was first published as part of his "Celebrated Crimes" series, and tells the fascinating story of the trial and execution and Madame de Brinvilliers, one of the most famous murderers in French history. Accused of three murders, the French aristocrat Marie-Madeleine-Marguerite d'Aubray (1630-1676) was convicted based on her confession-which was obtained through torture-and a series of letters written by her deceased lover. Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his lavish lifestyle.
