Download or read book Reading Late Lawrence written by N. Reeve and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Late Lawrence is a study of a number of the neglected fictional works of D. H. Lawrence's last period: these include Glad Ghosts , Sun, The Lovely Lady, The Blue Moccasins , and the first two revisions of Lady Chatterley's Lover . The particular focus is upon Lawrence's revisions, and the insights they offer into the complexity of his writing processes and the depth of his commitment to renewal and re-imagining. The study draws extensively upon the manuscript and variant material recently made available in the new scholarly editions of Lawrence's work.

Book The Limits of Love

Download or read book The Limits of Love written by Michael Squires and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Limits of Love: The Lives of D. H. Lawrence and Frieda von Richthofen provides a candid look at two illustrious people who tested the capacity—and the limits—of marriage. The Lawrences come alive not as simple quarreling travelers, nor as blissful domestic partners, but as complex personalities who experimented with marriage to see if it would fulfill their needs. Their antagonisms and their sexual experiences informed Lawrence’s fearless novels The Rainbow and Women in Love. Both works also tested the boundaries of public taste and faced harsh receptions. The cost of the Lawrences’ strong but unstable marriage was high. Despite periods of happiness and peace, angry clashes meant separations and uneasy agreements to repair the marital intimacy when it cracked. Fractures of 1916, 1919, 1923, and 1926 healed slowly and with difficulty. In Lawrence’s most calculated and famous work, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, he successfully coded their marital stress and, full of rage, fused two stories of failed marriages. Drawing on many unpublished and recently discovered letters, The Limits of Love offers readers a detailed reconstruction of two complicated lives, written with narrative speed and a forceful style, filled with vivid interpretations of Lawrence’s work, and conveying deep sympathy for people living outside established norms. This new dual biography, based on years of research by Michael Squires, captures the essence of Lawrence and Frieda, making the couple real, alive, and accessible.

Book Sea and Sardinia

Download or read book Sea and Sardinia written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written after the First World War when he was living in Sicily, Sea and Sardinia records Lawrence's journey to Sardinia and back in January 1921. It reveals his response to a new landscape and people and his ability to transmute the spirit of place into literary art. Like his other travel writings the book is also a shrewd inquiry into the political and social values of an era which saw the rise of communism and fascism. On one level an indictment of contemporary materialism, Sea and Sardinia is nevertheless an optimistic book, celebrating the creativity of the human spirit and seeking in the fundamental laws which governed human nature in the past fresh inspiration for the present. This 1997 edition restores censored passages and corrects corrupt textual readings to reveal for the first time the book Lawrence himself called 'a marvel of veracity'.

Book The American Lawrence

Download or read book The American Lawrence written by Lee M. Jenkins and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as a distinctly English author, D. H. Lawrence is reevaluated as a creator and critic of American literature in this imaginative study. From 1922 to 1925, during his "savage pilgrimage" in Mexico and New Mexico, Lawrence completed the core of what Lee Jenkins terms his "American oeuvre"--including his major volume of criticism, Studies in Classic American Literature. By examining Lawrence's experiences in the Americas, including his fascination with indigenous cultures, Jenkins illustrates how the modernist writer helped shape both American literary criticism and the American literary canon. Reassessing Lawrence's relationship to American modernism and his literary contemporaries in the New World, Jenkins portrays Lawrence as a transatlantic writer whose significant body of work embraces and adapts both English and American traditions and innovations.

Book The Letters of D H Lawrence

Download or read book The Letters of D H Lawrence written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, covering three years from March 1924 to March 1927, comprises over 890 letters, of which about 350 are previously unpublished. In 1924 Lawrence is again in the USA. He and Frieda, with his disciple the Honourable Dorothy Brett, return to Taos, New Mexico where Frieda soon becomes the owner of a ranch, Kiowa. The tensions among them contribute to Lawrence's falling dangerously ill. He recovers at Kiowa; he and Frieda go to England and Germany in Autumn 1925; they then settle in Italy, where - except for his final visit the next summer to the Midlands - they remain. After leaving the USA he writes short and long stories with European settings, book reviews, and the first two versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. It is a productive period, but Lawrence's health becomes a serious concern. The volume provides annotation identifying persons and allusions, and includes a biographical introduction.
