Download or read book The Years with Laura Diaz written by Carlos Fuentes and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: _____________________ 'An admirable novel'- The Times 'In this portrait of men and women swept along by great events, and determined to be on the side of the angels, Fuentes has invested the often colourless world of politics with romantic ardour' - Sunday Telegraph _____________________ An epic and heartbreaking love story that will leave no one untouched. Like Fuentes's masterpiece The Death of Artemio Cruz, the action in this novel begins in the state of Veracruz and moves to Mexico City. From 1905 to 1978, Fuentes traces the extraordinary Laura Díaz; a life filled with a multitude of witty, heartbreaking scenes and the sounds, colours, tastes and scents of Mexico. Laura grows into a politically committed artist who is also a wife and mother, a lover of great men, and a complicated and alluring heroine whose bravery prevails despite her losing a brother, son, and grandson to the darkest forces of Mexico's turbulent, often corrupt politics. Hers is a life which has helped to affect the course of history, and it is the story of a woman who has loved and understood with unflinching honesty. _____________________ 'Fuentes's affair with the fickle forces of creativity reaches a rare and poignant intensity ... a landmark book' - Scotsman

Download or read book A Companion to Under the Volcano written by Lawrence J. Clipper and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An item-by-item discussion of the innumerable, often obscure details of Malcolm Lowry's novel, this book comprises 1,600 notes covering some 7,000 specific points. The notes are keyed to page numbers in the Penguin paperback and the two standard hardback editions. The appendices include a glossary, bibliography, maps of the region, and an index of motifs. In their comprehensive but unpedantic commentary on the novel's complexities, the authors' emphasis is on the narrative level. All points of obscurity are followed by an interpretation of fact. Thus references are noted to films, books, places, foreign languages, and national and tribal histories. Special attention is given to the literary, mystical, and Mexican background.

Download or read book Lawrence Greene and Lowry written by Douglas Veitch and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When writers go on journeys it is as often to explore the terra incognita of their own selves as to establish the identities of strange lands; in the case of many English novelists between the great wars it was certainly true, as Douglas Veitch remarks in the study I am introducing, that their work, "even as it essayed the exotic, cast an eye homeward and inward", and that they "roamed the world, seeking surcease from a prevailing malaise which doubted the values of Western Civilization." ... Mr. Veitch has taken this vital element in the three novels--The Plumed Serpent, The Power and the Glory and Under The Volcano--and has used it not merely to examine these works themselves but also to sketch out the ambivalent role which landscape plays in all fiction, as omnipresent background but also as a rich source of symbols and images reflecting the human drama which a book develops. He has, as he more than once makes clear, done more than read all the relevant literature; he has himself travelled to Mexico in order to see and experience the extraordinary terrain, and, as I can vouch on the basis of my own knowledge of that infinitely attractive and repellent country, he used his senses well while he was there. --from the Introduction by George Woodcock
Download or read book News from the Empire written by Fernando del Paso and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If there was not so much fiction in News from the Empire, it could be called a work of history. In fact, the focus of this broad work is history itself, as well as the many unrecorded lives and events that history has forgotten from this strange era in Mexico's early nationhood. Using Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Carlota, as a starting point, Fernando Del Paso both considers what Mexico is and the country's place in the larger narrative of world history. The book spans the palaces of Europe and the villages of Mexico, yet despite its broad focus News is a book rich in characters and details, a work that opens up this era of Mexican history to readers without specialized knowledge. Maximilian and Carlota are the focus of the book, and even if they are not explicitly on every page, they are always in the background somewhere, providing the humanizing contradictions that fill it. Del Paso draws a complicated picture of two naïve people placed in a situation they could not manage and a country they did not understand. This innocence is especially inexplicable in the case of Maximilian, who, as brother of Austria's Emperor Franz Josef, should have known something about ruling but is completely unable to govern.
