Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Landed Estate: Containing Directions for the Management and Development of the Resources of Landed Property While Works embracing details of the Science and Practice of Agriculture'have been issued in considerable numbers, those which relate to what may-be termed the Science of Landowner ship, or the general Management of Landed Property, are com paratively few. Yet this is a matter in which many persons have a direct interest, rendering it desirable that full and clear infor mation should exist on all points connected with it. Thus we have, inthe first place, the Proprietors of Land, tenantfarmers, and those who represent the proprietors, and stand between them and their tenants, or Land Agents; but beyond those parties there are others occupying subordinate positions, such as farm-bailifi's, Foresters, and even Country Tradesmen, all more or less directly engaged in the business of Estate Man agement. Not illustrated. 1869 edition. Excerpt: ... used a plough for some years manufactured by the Messrs Howard of Bedford, and found it very useful both in reclaiming new land and in deepening and stirring land which has been in cultivation. Fig. 89 is a sketch of the one I refer to. With four horses it will plough to a depth of one foot. The mould-board can be unscrewed and taken off, and a subsoil body put on, as shown in fig. 90. The cost of these implements are--for the plough, 4, 17s. 6d.; and for the subsoiling body, 17s. 6d. It is, however, better to have two of these ploughs, and also two subsoil bodies, when the subsoiling-plough should be put in the same furrow following the other plough, and thus it can be stirred up to a greater depth. The ploughing and subsoiling of a portion of moorland on this estate with Howard's ploughs, as described, cost about 4 per imperial acre. Section 5.--The Reclamation of Waste Lands by Steam-Power. I am not aware that steam-power has been much employed in stirring up waste lands with a view to reclamation. Where there are no large holdfast stones bedded in the soil, there is no reason why it should not be so employed. There are many large portions of waste land in this country which are free from large stones and roots, and which might be advantageously brought into cultivation by means of steam-power. There were about one hundred acres of moorland on this estate in 1867, the site of which is comparatively level; the soil is a peaty loam, with a subsoil of a sandy character resting on rock. It was covered with heath intermixed with a few coarse grasses and fern. Considering that it was a good subject for cultivation, the proprietor, Major Stapylton, decided upon having it brought into cultivation, and to have it done by...

Book The English Landed Estate in the Nineteeth Century

Download or read book The English Landed Estate in the Nineteeth Century written by David Spring and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1963. The English Landed Estate in the Nineteeth Century: Its Administration deals principally with the administration of large landed estates during the years from 1830 to 1870. The book also throws new light on the work of the Inclosure Commissioners, who, as a department of the central government, supervised agricultural improvements made by landowners who borrowed from the government and from land companies. Author David Spring argues that the British government intervened in agriculture much more than is commonly thought. In describing the hierarchy of estate management, Spring relies, wherever possible, on hitherto unused family papers and estate documents. Especially important is his material on the Dukes of Bedford and on the domestic economy and financial position of the Russell Family. The chapter titled "The Landowner," based on the seventh Duke of Bedford's correspondence with his agent, is a case study of a single estate and provides insight into the workings of a great landowner's mind. The remaining chapters, dealing with lawyers, land agents, and the Inclosure Commissioners, include other individual portraits. Among these are Christopher Haedy, the Duke of Bedford's chief agent; James Loch, king of estate agents in nineteenth-century England; Henry Morton, the Earl of Durham's land agent; and William Blamire and James Caird, two of the Inclosure Commissioners.

Book Landed Estates and Rural Inequality in English History

Download or read book Landed Estates and Rural Inequality in English History written by Eric L. Jones and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a detailed investigation of local sources, this book examines the history of the landed estate system in England since the mid-seventeenth century. Over recent centuries England was increasingly occupied by landed estates run by locally dominant and nationally influential owners. Historically, newcomers adopted the behaviour of existing landowners, all of whom presided over a relatively impoverished mass of rural inhabitants. Preferences for privacy and fine views led landowners to demolish or remove some whole villages. Alongside extensive landscape remodelling, rights-of-way were often privatised, imposing a cost on the economy. Social and environmental implications of the landed system as a whole are discussed and particular attention is paid to the nineteenth-century investment of industrial profits in estates. Why was the system so attractive and how was it perpetuated? Matters of poverty and inequality have always been of perennial interest to scholars of many persuasions and to the educated public; with this important book surveying environmental concerns in addition.
