Book excerpt: Events in West Asia constantly demand global attention due to regional conflicts, faith-based divisions, sectarian violence and wars that are often ignited by external powers. Popular agitations for political, economic and social reform frequently make the scenario even more fragile, turbulent and uncertain. West Asia is a destination for millions of pilgrims to sacred sites venerated by the three Abrahamic faiths - Islam, Christianity and Judaism. It is also at the heart of global energy, trade and financial dynamics, the centre of logistical connectivity projects, and an emerging hub of technological research and development. As a new world order asserts its claims across Eurasia and the Indian Ocean, West Asia is witnessing new diplomatic initiatives to reshape regional alignments and define the new order. Developments here are of abiding concern for India - it is closely tied to the region in terms of energy, trade, investment, logistical connectivity and the interests of its eight-million strong resident community. West Asia at War, written by veteran Indian diplomat Talmiz Ahmad, combines an understanding of the diverse forces that are shaping the politics and economics of this region, and paints a portrait that is at once grim, painful, colourful and exciting.
Download or read book The Great Shutdown written by Jyoti Mukul and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 24 March 2020, after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, a complete nationwide lockdown was announced in India. In addition to other restrictions, which included suspension of air travel and long- and short-distance modes of transport, it was decided that the Indian Railways would no longer operate. The shutting down of the almost 68,000 kilometre-long railway network severed, in many cases, the only link for people with their home states. The Great Shutdown closely examines the repercussions of these decisions, the resultant uncertainty and emotional crisis for millions of people, especially migrant workers, who were separated from their families at a time when the threat of an unknown disease loomed large. It chronicles the COVID-19 regulations that were enforced during the lockdown, the different phases of unlocking and the second wave, and their humanitarian challenges. It also talks about the alternatives that could have been explored to keep travel going, which would have saved countless people a lot of suffering.

It sends the highest number of Lok Sabha members to Parliament and has the biggest legislature in the country. It also has to its credit the highest number of prime ministers and powerful political dynasties. Yet it has been behind several states, despite being home to bastions of some of the biggest names in Indian politics. With its clear and decisive imprint on national politics, UP also reflects some of its worst ills: from casteism and using religion as a political plank to manoeuvring for power. Download or read book India s Historic Battles written by Andrew Ward and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the horrors that blackened the uprising of 1857, none could match the atrocities committed at Kanpur. In Kanpur, 1857 - part of a new series of books on India's historic battles - historian Andrew Ward gives an unblinking account of the siege of the entrenchment into which the European community fled when the town's four native regiments rebelled, the massacre at Sati Chaura Ghat, and the hacking to death of the surviving Europeans. Their slaughter would exacerbate the savage and indiscriminate killings the British were already carrying out, burning villages and condemning thousands of locals to flogging, degradation and the gallows. This richly illustrated field guide draws on decades of research to depict the pitched battles, and the acts of heroism and sacrifice on both sides that were subsumed by campaigns of atrocity and terror.

Download or read book The Untold Story of the People of Azad Kashmir written by Christopher Snedden and published by Hurst & Company. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Azad (Free) Jammu and Kashmir (J&K)) is that part of Kashmir within Pakistan, separated by a Line of Control from Indian territory. This book is a rarity: it offers a fresh interpretive history of the largely forgotten four million people of Azad Kashmir. The author contends that in October 1947, pro-Pakistan Muslims in south-western J&K instigated the Kashmir dispute-not Pashtun tribesmen invading from Pakistan, as India has consistently claimed. Later called Azad Kashmiris, these people, Snedden argues, are legitimate stakeholders in an unresolved dispute. He provides comprehensive new information that critically examines Azad Kashmir's administration, economy, political system, and its subordinate relationship with Pakistan. Azad Kashmiris considered their administration to be the only legitimate government in J&K and expected that it would rule after J&K was re-unified by a UN-supervised plebiscite. This poll has never been conducted and Azad Kashmir has effectively, if not yet legally, become a (dependent) part of Pakistan. Long disenchanted with Islamabad, some Azad Kashmiris now favour independence for J&K, hoping that they may survive and prosper without recourse to either of their bigger neighbours. Snedden concludes his book by assessing the various proposals to resolve Azad Kashmir's international status and the broader Kashmir dispute.
