Book excerpt: Finally, after 58 years The Body on Mount Royal is back in print, starring hard-drinking private dick, Russell Teed. From the back cover of the 1953 edition: Take a brutally beaten body, a lonely spot on Montreal's famous mountain, and a buxum brunette whose embrace brings treachery. Add a large dose of vicious gang warfare and a slice of underworld life. Mix these ingredients well and you have a large helping of spicy, fast-paced adventure. An excerpt from the book: I have a hunch you want to hear about the people I know, the ones I work among and get drunk with, and beat up or get beat up by. Sure, I know the rolling greenery of upper Westmount and the high square solemn houses of midtown Montreal's Square Mile, and the wide streets of Outremont with the mansions set way back. But my name is Russell Teed. R. Teed, Private Investigator. I don't always like it, but I get involved in crimes. And I go where the criminals go.

Book excerpt: This early work by Mary Elizabeth Braddon was originally published in 1882 and we are now republishing it with a brand new biography of the author. 'Mount Royal' is one of Braddon's novels in the sensation literature genre. Mary Elizabeth Braddon was born in Soho, London, England in 1835. She was educated privately in England and France, and at the age of just nineteen was offered a commission by a local printer to produce a serial novel "combining the humour of Dickens with the plot and construction of G. P. R. Reynolds" What emerged was Three Times dead, or The Secret of the Heath, which was published five years later under the title The Trail of the Serpent (1861). For the rest of her life, Braddon was an extremely prolific writer, producing more than eighty novels, while also finding time to write and act in a number of stage plays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respectable Burial also highlights how important a role Montreal played in Canada's history. The cemetery is the final resting place of politician Alexander Galt, poet F.R. Scott, hockey star Howie Morenz, explorer David Thompson, bank presidents, renegades, hangmen, and victims of the Titanic. This history of a model rural cemetery, an innovator in perpetual care and proprietor of the first crematorium in Canada, illustrates changing attitudes to burial and commemoration - including the relationships between Protestantism, Romanticism, and death. Young also shows how the cemetery, a site of great natural beauty that helped inspire Frederick Law Olmsted's adjacent Mount Royal Park, became a much-loved public urban space and examines how the evolution of its landscaping, architecture, and use reflect changing attitudes to the place of women, recreation, heritage, and the environment. Incorporating a rich collection of archival illustrations, walking maps, and a colour photo essay by photographer Geoffrey James, Respectable Burial will appeal to anyone interested in Canadian history, parks, and cities.

Tony Speers, a newly promoted sergeant, arrives at Mountroyal RUC Station, located in the heart of East Belfast. When Tony meets up with his new section he quickly realises he has inherited a very dysfunctional group of individuals. They include a reluctant genius, an alcoholic and other endearing personalities who combine to make ‘A’ Section a close and effective unit. A spate of sinister sexual attacks have recently occurred in the area raising local tensions, leaving females afraid to go out at night. The uniformed police and local CID have thus far drawn a blank in apprehending the offender. The sub divisional commander of Mountroyal Station is under increasing pressure from local politicians, the chief constable, the press and local paramilitaries to make an arrest. Join Tony and the gang as they try to crack this case as well as attend to other miscellaneous calls within the Mountroyal Sub Division.

Book excerpt: Bodies and body parts of the dead have long been considered valuable material for use in medical science. Over time and in different places, they have been dissected, autopsied, investigated, harvested for research and therapeutic purposes, collected to turn into museum and other specimens, and then displayed, disposed of, and exchanged. This book examines the history of such activities, from the early nineteenth century through to the present, as they took place in hospitals, universities, workhouses, asylums and museums in England, Australia and elsewhere. Through a series of case studies, the volume reveals the changing scientific, economic and emotional value of corpses and their contested place in medical science.
