Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Tom Duncan is on the way up as an expert targeteer for the United States military. Unlike many of his peers, Duncan has an almost preternatural feel for the world at war. He's able to plan strategic campaigns, identify the enemy's critical weaknesses, and exploit vulnerabilities faster than the competition-which makes him a shoe-in for a promotion. Soon, he could become a major or maybe even colonel. As Duncan's military dreams come true, his eyes are opened to the monstrous ways of his own government at war, and he's sickened by the unnecessary violence. When the enemy escalates with the introduction of chemical munitions against civilians, Duncan's boss wants to make an example-by which he means the use of weapons of mass destruction, otherwise known as nukes. Duncan knows there's no coming back from WMDs. In order to make a point without bloody consequence, Duncan arranges for a clean, efficient attack-an attack that goes horribly wrong. To his utmost regret, it's not the enemy but friendly civilians and American military personnel who suffer. So begins a battle between the state of Texas and the United States government ... but whose side will Duncan choose?

Book excerpt: About the Book This novel is about a teenage boy named Wade in Texas during the Depression Era. He is going through some of the normal trials of growing up - siblings, schoolwork, bullies, romance, and embarrassing personal issues. Besides these, he is also confronted with racist attitudes toward certain Mexican-American friends he has made. He is torn between two alternatives: trying to deal with his conflicts in ways that come natural to him or handling them according to his counter-cultural Christian beliefs. A quarter of a century later, in the early 1960s, Wade is a grown man and married with two kids of his own. They, too, are seeing the effects of racial bigotry in their school against their African-American classmates. In his earlier life, Wade learned some hard lessons in standing up for what's right, even when it hurts; now he's trying to instill those principles and values into the character of his children. The moral issues dealt with in the story are as relevant today as they were eighty-five years ago. About the Author Michael W. Owens was born in Burnet, Texas. He currently resides in Rome, Georgia. He can’t claim to be a socially-active do-gooder, championing causes that oppose social injustice, heal the sick, feed the hungry, and shelter the homeless. But he at least makes charitable contributions and is an active member of his church, New Armuchee Baptist. He’s retired and enjoys spending his free time studying the Bible, reading novels, watching old movies, and singing karaoke. He also keeps busy maintaining his old hose.

Download or read book The Confederates of Chappell Hill Texas written by Stephen Chicoine and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas was the South's frontier in the antebellum period. The vast new state represented the hope and future of many Southern cotton planters. As a result, Texas changed tremendously during the 1850s as increasing numbers of Southern planters moved westward to settle. Planters brought with them large numbers of slaves to plant, cultivate and pick the valuable cash crop; by 1860, slaves made up 30 percent of the total Texas population. No state in the South grew nearly as fast as Texas during this decade, and as the booming economy for cotton led the economic development, the state became increasingly embroiled in the national debate about whether slavery should exist within a democratic republic dedicated to the freedom and independence of man. This work is centered on the role played by the town of Chappell Hill during this portion of Texas history. It offers details about the area's pre-war prosperity as a center of wealth, influence and aristocracy and describes the angry fervor of the period leading up to the war. Men of this small town played a role in many of the major campaigns and battles of the war, and their motivations for enlisting and their tales of duty are included here. Through excerpts from their correspondence and journals, the book emphasizes personal experiences of the soldiers. Post-war adventures are also offered as the author explores Texas resistance to Federal occupation, the town's yellow fever epidemic and a period of reconciliation as aging veterans gather at Blue-Gray reunions to reunite the nation.

Download or read book English Battlefields written by Michael Rayner and published by Tempus Publishing, Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England has been fought over for centuries, by invaders and in civil wars. The sites of these desperate struggles are as varied as the reasons they were fought over, be they fields, towns, or fortresses, by land, sea, or air. These haunted acres are places of commemoration, memory and, above all, history. By looking at them like any other form of historical evidence, much can be learned about the events which took place there. In this ground-breaking volume covering over 500 battlefields, Michael Rayner unravels these various strands and weaves them back together to give clear, concise accounts of the battles which shaped England.
Download or read book The Epic Battles for Ticonderoga 1758 written by William R. Nester and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2008-02-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 8, 1758, British General James Abercromby ordered a controversial frontal assault of the French defenses on the Ticonderoga peninsula in upstate New York. Outnumbering the French by four to one, the capture of their fort, named Carillon, seemed all but assured. Once the fort—called the "key to a continent"—was in British hands the road would be open to invade Canada, capture Montreal and Quebec, and end the French and Indian War. The attack, however, would go horribly wrong and result in nearly 2,000 British casualties, the single bloodiest day of the entire war. It would be another year before the British, under a different commander, would capture the fortifications and rename them Fort Ticonderoga. The Epic Battles for Ticonderoga, 1758 examines the skirmishes and raids in the months leading up to the battle, discusses Abercromby's campaign in the larger context of British grand strategy for the year 1758, the roles of key military and political figures on both sides, and the conflict's aftermath.
Download or read book The WPA Guide to Texas written by Federal Writers' Project and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. Equaling the massive size of the state, the WPA Guide to Texas is just as expansive at 716 pages. From the Panhandle to the Rio Grande Valley, The Lone Star State’s landscape is as varied as its political and cultural past. Having been under the control of six different nations’ flags, the history section is particularly rich. The guide also includes a helpful list of books about the state.
