Book In the Wrong Place Alien Marine Crustaceans Distribution Biology and Impacts

Download or read book In the Wrong Place Alien Marine Crustaceans Distribution Biology and Impacts written by Bella S. Galil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Wrong Place: Alien Marine Crustaceans - Distribution, Biology And Impacts provides a unique view into the remarkable story of how shrimps, crabs, and lobsters – and their many relatives – have been distributed around the world by human activity, and the profound implications of this global reorganization of biodiversity for marine conservation biology. Many crustaceans form the base of marine food chains, and are often prominent predators and competitors acting as ecological engineers in marine ecosystems. Commencing in the 1800s global commerce began to move hundreds – perhaps thousands – of species of marine crustaceans across oceans and between continents, both intentionally and unintentionally. This book tells the story of these invasions from Arctic waters to tropical shores, highlighting not only the importance and impact of all prominent crustacean invasions in the world's oceans, but also the commercial exploitation of invasive crabs and shrimps. Topics explored for the first time in one volume include the historical roots of man's impact on crustacean biogeography, the global dispersal of crabs, barnacle invasions, insights into the potential scale of tropical invasions, the history of the world's most widely cultured shrimp, the invasive history and management of red king crabs in Norway, Chinese mitten crabs in England, and American blue crabs in Europe, the evolutionary ecology of green crabs, and many other subjects as well, touching upon all ocean shores.

Book Fluctuations in the Abundance of the Blue Crab in Chesapeake Bay

Download or read book Fluctuations in the Abundance of the Blue Crab in Chesapeake Bay written by John Cleary Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts supports the largest crab fishery in the United States. Chesapeake Bay on the Atlantic coast and the estuarine waters of Louisiana on the Gulf coast now furnish 75 percent of the catch. Fluctuations in the abundance of blue crabs have occurred over the past half century in Chesapeake Bay where year-round fisheries have long been established. This report examines the nature and causes of fhese fluctuations. Several natural factors which appear to regulate the annual survival rate and the abundance of the blue crab are discussed on the basis of available knowledge.

Book Regulating the Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus Fishery in Virginia

Download or read book Regulating the Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus Fishery in Virginia written by James E. Kirkley and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The blue crab fishery has been one of the most important fisheries of Virginia; the actual economic importance of the fishery, however, is not well known. There appears to be an urgent need to better manage and regulate the resource and the fishery. In this brief paper, an overview of regulatory options for managing and regulating the blue crab fishery is provided. The authors initially focus on open-access strategies, and subsequently present a discussion of regulations that address the common-property, open-access fishery. Prior to discussing management options, the authors discuss goals and objectives of resource management"--National Sea Grant Library publication website.

Book Variability in Size at Maturity of Female Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus in Coastal South Carolina

Download or read book Variability in Size at Maturity of Female Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus in Coastal South Carolina written by Michael Thienes and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, supports the one of the largest fisheries in the United States. Despite the ecological and economic value of this species to South Carolina, many aspects of blue crab life history, which are important for ensuring effective management strategies, remain unexamined. Size restrictions for harvesting blue crabs were set nearly a century ago; however, size shifts in response to temperature can occur over contemporary timescales, and in the absence of direct climate studies, projected morphological responses to climate warming are typically based on latitudinal clines. Evidence of spatial and temporal variability for this species in both Atlantic and Gulf coast populations highlights the need for characterizing patterns of mature female blue crab demographics in South Carolina. This study incorporated a range of estuarine and marine environments from lower saline habitats and coastal spawning grounds to investigate spatial and temporal variation in female blue crab size. Long-term datasets were analyzed from 40 years (1979-2018) of fishery-independent estuarine trawl surveys and 30 years (1989 – 2018) of fishery-independent coastal trawl surveys conducted by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Mixed-effects modelling procedures revealed significant spatial variability in mature female blue crab size in the southeastern U.S. Patterns in temporal trends across the time series were variable. These results provide detailed information on regional variability in female blue crab size, a life history trait that is central to effective management strategies for this species, and the applicability of latitudinal clines as a proxy for climate-induced changes in the size.
