Book I Carried a Bloody Bucket on My Shoulder

Download or read book I Carried a Bloody Bucket on My Shoulder written by Thomas Floyd and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WWII Veteran, Thomas Floyd, Jr., describes surviving the Battle of the Bulge. His frozen boots struggled through chest high snow to remove the swastika from the flag at German Headquarters. Thomas Floyd joined the army in 1943. He trained with the 66th Infantry Division. Due to the casualties from Normandy, and the battle of the hedgerows, replacements were needed. Thomas was sent into the 28th Infantry Division as a replacement. The 28th Division was originally a Pennsylvania Guard unit known as the Keystone Division. Their patch was a red keystone. As a result of their victorious experiences in battle, the Germans referred to their division as the "Blutiger Eimer," meaning "Bloody Bucket," due to its shape and color. The Bloody Bucket became a name associated with pride for the men who fought in their Division. They served in two of the toughest battles in which the Americans were engaged in the European Theatre: Hurtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge. For their part in the Battle of the Bulge, the 112th Regimental Combat Team (in which Thomas Floyd served) was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. Col. Floyd, serving twenty-seven years, also received two Bronze Stars, the European Theater Medal with four Campaign Stars, the American Campaign, American Defense, Good Conduct, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Members of the 28th Division are also entitled to wear a number of foreign awards.

Book excerpt: The Bloody Bucket covers a two-year span from 1916 through 1918, in the life of Thomas H. Schalata (the author's grandfather). A work of historical fiction, primarily based on actual events, the story opens with this 24-year-old living at home with his parents and siblings in the Bridesburg section of Philadelphia. He works a full-time job at Baldwin Locomotive Works, while also serving as a member of the PA National Guard. With the threat of the country being dragged into World War I, this Polish-American family must endure the typical struggles of the times. During this span, his military career takes him to El Paso, Texas for the Mexican Border Campaign, Camp Hancock, Ga. for military training, and eventually to England, France, and Belgium as a participant in the war as a member of Pennsylvania's famous 28th Division. This unique narrative chronicles the day-to-day lives of the men and women who survived this horrendous ordeal. The Bloody Bucket appeals to a wide range of interests: World War I and military scholars, people of Polish heritage, railroad buffs, sports enthusiasts (primarily boxing and baseball), and those interested in Philadelphia history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inventive study of relations between the National Guard and the Regular Army during World War II, Guard Wars follows the Pennsylvania National Guard's 28th Infantry Division from its peacetime status through training and into combat in Western Europe. The broader story, spanning the years 1939--1945, sheds light on the National Guard, the U.S. Army, and American identities and priorities during the war years. Michael E. Weaver carefully tracks the division's difficult transformation into a combat-ready unit and highlights General Omar Bradley's extraordinary capacity for leadership -- which turned the Pennsylvanians from the least capable to one of the more capable units, a claim dearly tested in the Battle of the HÃ1⁄4rtgen Forest. This absorbing and informative analysis chronicles the nation's response to the extreme demands of a world war, and the flexibility its leaders and soldiers displayed in the chaos of combat.

Book The Heavenly Table

Book excerpt: From Donald Ray Pollock, author of the highly acclaimed The Devil All the Time and Knockemstiff, comes a dark, gritty, electrifying (and, disturbingly, weirdly funny) new novel that will solidify his place among the best contemporary American authors. It is 1917, in that sliver of border land that divides Georgia from Alabama. Dispossessed farmer Pearl Jewett ekes out a hardscrabble existence with his three young sons: Cane (the eldest; handsome; intelligent); Cob (short; heavy set; a bit slow); and Chimney (the youngest; thin; ill-tempered). Several hundred miles away in southern Ohio, a farmer by the name of Ellsworth Fiddler lives with his son, Eddie, and his wife, Eula. After Ellsworth is swindled out of his family's entire fortune, his life is put on a surprising, unforgettable, and violent trajectory that will directly lead him to cross paths with the Jewetts. No good can come of it. Or can it? In the gothic tradition of Flannery O'Connor and Cormac McCarthy with a healthy dose of cinematic violence reminiscent of Sam Peckinpah, Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers, the Jewetts and the Fiddlers will find their lives colliding in increasingly dark and horrific ways, placing Donald Ray Pollock firmly in the company of the genre's literary masters.

Book The Novels of Lisa Alther

Download or read book The Novels of Lisa Alther written by Lisa Alther and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 1183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three wise and witty novels of the sixties, sexuality, and the South by a New York Times–bestselling “strong, salty, original talent” (Doris Lessing). Kinflicks: “An ambitious, funny, lucid and unfailingly honest” coming-of-age novel set in the 1960s American South (The New Yorker). Tart-tongued Tennessean Ginny Babcock seems to live in an idyllic world—and her mother documents every moment for the family’s home movies. But mother’s “kinflicks” don’t capture everything about Ginny. Not by a long shot. Original Sins: In this “thoroughly endearing” novel, Sally, Emily, Jed, Raymond, and Donny are friends who dream big in rural Tennessee (Chicago Tribune). But the road to reality isn’t quite what they imagined. Some take the safe route; others drift away to reconsider their roots and traditions; and for Donny, an African American, fulfilling dreams is all about resilience. In the ever-shifting landscape of the 1950s and ’60s, they grow up, grow apart, and have every good intention of coming back together. Five Minutes in Heaven: Raised in the Tennessee hills in the 1950s, Jude grows into a young woman who finds her soul mate in her new neighbor Molly. But when age and social convention intervene, she ventures north to pursue all that sixties New York has to offer—including a transitional comfort with a man in the midst of his own sexual discovery. With an endearing heroine and a smart consideration of what it means to love—and be loved—this coming-of-age novel is “a little bit of heaven” (Rita Mae Brown).

But her mother’s camera isn’t there to capture Ginny’s growing rebellion against her prim Southern upbringing. From her backseat exploits as a popular high schooler, to her late night adventures at the moonshine joint with a greaser boyfriend, to her passionate days with a lover at the militant feminist commune in Vermont, Ginny throws herself into the moment—until, finally, she must return home and look after her ailing mother. Funny, wise, and filled with unforgettable characters, Kinflicks is a captivating novel that draws on the human fallout of turbulent times. Book excerpt: The definitive account of one of World War II’s bloodiest campaigns—the five-month battle between American and German forces in the Huertgen Forest—told through the words of the men who were there. From the preface: “In the course of research and interviews while writing a series of books on World War II, I became increasingly aware of the campaign for the Huertgen Forest. While survivors of other battles sometimes criticized the strategy and the orders they were given, there was a depth of anger about the Huertgen that surpassed anything I had encountered elsewhere. The unhappiness with what occurred and the absence of much objective coverage in the memoirs of those in the top command slots convinced me to produce this history. As I have reiterated in all of my books, which rely heavily on oral or eyewitness reports, there are always the dangers of flawed memory, limited vantage points, and the possibility of self-interest in such accounts. But the almost universal condemnation of their superiors’ critical decisions by individuals who were under fire in that ‘green hell’ offers a cautionary note on the accuracy and the truths of histories that draw from the official documents and the personal papers of the likes of Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Courtney Hodges (who apparently left little in the way of records), J. Lawton Collins and others in similar positions. . . . Each new war differs from that of the past, but to ignore what happened in the Huertgen enhances the possibilities for another bitter victory, if not a defeat.”

Book excerpt: In prose possessed of the radically stripped-down beauty and ferocious wit that characterize his work, this early novel by Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett recounts the grotesque and improbable adventures of a fantastically logical Irish servant and his master. Watt is a beautifully executed black comedy that, at its core, is rooted in the powerful and terrifying vision that made Beckett one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.
