Book The Blood Stiller

Download or read book The Blood Stiller written by Minerva Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wealthy New York socialite Christina Gartner, embittered by her recent divorce, attempts to escape from her glamorous life by moving from her luxurious Fifth Avenue residence to a shabby apartment building on East 82nd Street. Christina, raised on a farm in rural Ohio, is intellectual, bookish and rather naive. She impulsively abandoned work on a doctorate in history and a promising academic career to marry Lawrence Digby, heir to a fortune and head of the Digby Corporation. When he betrays and publicly humiliates her, she is crushed and cannot get her life together. Shortly after her move to the new apartment, she befriends her mysterious neighbor Mme. Feodosia Petrovna Antonova, a White Russian who fled her country after the Russian Revolution of 1917. Depressed, close to a breakdown, Christina is enthralled by Mme. Antonova's dramatic stories of old Russia, which she suspects may be exaggerated. Lulled by the safety and comfort of living in Mme. Antonova's version of the past, she is drawn into her neighbor's eccentric emigre circle, and gradually becomes aware that Madame Antonova has been guarding a dangerous secret since her escape from the revolution. Christina is plunged into the reality of her neighbor's turbulent past and involvement in the intrigue and sexual debauchery surrounding both the Bolshevik leaders and Tsar Nicholas II's court. Her attempts to uncover Madame Antonova's long buried secret leads to the heart of a sinister emigre conspiracy. Christina is forced into a dangerous game with the KGB, and ends up on the hit list of a shadowy former spy and his killers. This ruthless old Bolshevik, hunting for the powerful secret, is plotting to bring down the Russian government and install a reign of terror equal to Stalin's. On the run from the killers, Christina finds herself in a love-hate relationship with Jack Reilly, a New York detective, who takes her into protective custody. They have a passionate affair and she falls deeply in love. This fast paced historically accurate novel stretches over five decades and across the globe, from windswept Tobolsk in Siberia to the bustling streets of New York City. The compelling story of betrayal and intrigue moves from the secret revolutionary cells formed during Russia's revolution to the emigre world in Manhattan. The novel's suspense and action are created by interweaving the clues to the mystery between 1917 Russia and 1970 New York City. The unifying device for the multifaceted plot is the front porch of an isolated cabin in rural Ohio in 2000 where Christina, hiding from brutal killers, reviews her archive, reliving haunting scenes from her past, still questioning the truth of the story. The author researched Russia's Revolutionary and Stalinist periods for eight years, using public records, personal letters and accounts from the period and other primary sources. All of the recorded public events, as well as the details of the Tsar's family, Rasputin, Lenin and other known figures portrayed in this book, are historically accurate. The Blood Stiller is the first of a trilogy of historical thrillers that take place during the Russian Revolution and Civil War and the present day. The second novel, The Blood Archive, which begins in 2002 after the World Trade Center destruction and continues Christina's story, is soon to be published. It introduces Roo, a young redneck deputy sheriff from a small town in the Midwest who tries to redeem his failed life and Katya, a beautiful spoiled English woman who searches for her true identity. The third, The Devil's Tears set in New York and Baku, Azerbaijan, is a work in progress.

To make matters worse, the suspect list includes Weathers' boss, Provost John Martin, and Professor Linda Harmon, chair of the chemistry department. Weathers finds a silver lining, however, when it becomes clear that Lieutenant Annette Trieri, head of the investigations unit of the Durango Police Department, seems as interested in him as he is in her. But this mutual interest is misunderstood by whoever killed the professor, because now they are trying to kill Weathers, and, for good measure, Trieri as well. Together, the couple manages to stay alive while unraveling the chemistry professor's murder and uncovering a second, more sinister killing to which Weathers is also connected. Book Kind of a Big Deal

Download or read book Kind of a Big Deal written by Saul Austerlitz and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Generation Friends, featuring brand-new interviews with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, a surprising, incisive, and often hilarious book about the film that changed comedy, Anchorman. It’s been nearly twenty years since Ron Burgundy burst into movie fans’ lives, reminding San Diego to “stay classy” while lampooning a time gone by—although maybe not as far gone as we might think? In Kind of a Big Deal, comedy historian Saul Austerlitz tells the history of how Anchorman was developed, written, and cast, and how it launched the careers of future superstars like Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd, also setting the stage for a whole decade of comedy to come and influencing films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights, Knocked Up, Superbad, and so many more. But Kind of a Big Deal isn’t only a celebration of Anchorman—it’s also a cultural analysis of the film’s significance as a sly commentary on feminism, the media, fragile masculinity, 1970s nostalgia, and more. Featuring brand-new interviews with stars such as Will Ferrell, director Adam McKay, and other key players, the book includes insider commentary alongside updated pop-culture analysis. And it also shares surprising stories and facts: from the film’s original conception as a plane crash/cannibal comedy mashup to the surprising, real-life newscaster who inspired the character of Veronica. Overall, this is a celebration of a movie that millions love—but it’s also an unsparing look back at what has and hasn’t changed, since the 1970s and since 2004. Perfect for fans of the film and anyone who cares about comedy today, Kind of a Big Deal proves that the movie was, and is, exactly that.

Book Emergency General Surgery in Geriatrics

Download or read book Emergency General Surgery in Geriatrics written by Rifat Latifi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for a book on emergency general surgery in the elderly, as adults age 65 and older are the fastest growing segment of the population worldwide, and their number is expected to double to 89 million between now and 2050. Based on these changing demographics, it is expected that there will be a concurrent rise in the demand for a variety of surgical services, including vascular surgery (with a projected growth of 31%) and general surgery (with a projected growth of 18%), as well as in all sub-disciplines of surgery (thoracic, cardiac, oncology, hepatobiliary, transplant, plastic colorectal, orthopedic, gynecologic, urology and neurosurgery). In addition, older surgical patients often require a different level of care than younger patients during the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases. Many of our geriatric population have multiple chronic illnesses beyond the one for which surgery is required, and therefore are prone to developing postoperative complications, functional decline, loss of independence, and other undesirable outcomes. In response, this book offers surgeons, geriatrists and nurses state-of-the-art surgical approaches and essential information on the complex perioperative care of the elderly.
