Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Love is not consolation, it is light’ From the author of Maps for Lost Lovers and The Wasted Vigil comes a novel set in the months after 9/11, when Western armies invaded Afghanistan—a story of love, hope and grief, of uncorrupted faith and of what it means to be alive. Jeo and his foster-brother Mikal leave their home in Pakistan to help care for wounded Afghans. Within hours of entering the wide-horizoned Afghan landscape, Mikal and Jeo are separated and, emerging from the carnage, Mikal begins his search for Jeo. But his deepest wish is to return home—to the young woman he loves and who loves him, Jeo’s wife. The Blind Man’s Garden maps a place both phantasmally beautiful and chilling. Taking us on a journey from Al Qaeda’s hideouts in Waziristan and American-built military prisons to a family left behind—Mikal’s and Jeo’s blind, regretful father, Jeo’s resolute wife and her superstitious mother—it unflinchingly examines war and brotherhood, devastation, separation and remorse, while celebrating the redemptive power of nature, art and literature.

Book The Teacher of the Blind Vol 10

Download or read book The Teacher of the Blind Vol 10 written by Association of Teachers of the Blind and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher of the Blind, Vol. 10: April, 1922 Another blind friend of mine complained bitterly to me that, until he was fourteen, he was not permitted to use a knife and fork at home. We have had boys of thir teen and fourteen years of age who, when given a pair of shears to cut with, have held the blade in the hands and hope to cut with the handles. Now these are not exaggerated ex amples. They are to be met with in schools all over the kingdom, and it points to a very serious deficiency somewhere. It is not putting the case too strongly, I think, when we must apportion a very consider able amount of the blame for such a state of things to the parent. False kindness on his part has no place in an intelligent appreciation of the problems facing the effective education of the blind. On the other hand - not so frequently met true - is the utterly callous parent. Cases have come under my notice where children, when sent home for the summer vacation, have been packed off to bed straight away and, save for one or two journeys downstairs, have been allowed to remain there the whole time. I hope none of you will imagine that I advocate harsh ness in any degree. All I advise is the elimination of sentimentality. I am sur prised myself to think that I am signing my name as the author of a book on such a subject. Ten years ago I certainly would not have written it, for the blind man feels an invincible dislike to talking to others about his infirmity. A sense of duty has made me conquer this feeling. The blind are victims Of the ignorance of the public concerning their real condition. By explaining something of their psychology, I am helping to defend them against the prejudices which are the chief barrier to their professional activity.
