Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Amateurs Can Learn from Ulf Andersson's Positional Masterpieces One of the most effective ways to improve your chess is to take a world class-player as your example. By collecting his games, studying his choices and examining his style, you will understand what made him rise to the very top. This is what Guido Kern and Jurgen Kaufeld have done with Swedish chess legend Ulf Andersson, a positional genius with a crystal-clear style, who rose to the number 4 spot of the FIDE world rankings. Kaufeld and Kern have selected 80 of Andersson’s games and grouped them into 15 thematic strategy lessons, pinpointing exactly how the Swede made the difference in each case. Their instructive verbal explanations will improve your strategic skills and your positional feeling. Every chess player knows how difficult it can be to convert an advantage into a win. Positional technique is what you need and Grandmaster Chess Strategy teaches you exactly that. Throughout the book the authors have selected dozens of test positions at particularly instructive stages of the games.

Book The Man in the Arena

Download or read book The Man in the Arena written by Theodore Roosevelt and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first compilation of selections from the major works of Teddy Roosevelt since the resurgence in his popularity due to the major award-winning/bestselling biographies by Edmond Morris and H. W. Brands By the time he was twenty-five the future president of the United States was already a published author. From The Naval War of 1812 through his four-volume Winning of the West, Teddy Roosevelt proved himself a master historian...but one must not make the mistake of labeling him a stodgy academic. The future president was also a great outdoorsman, with such works as Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail and African Game Trails capturing his rough and ready lifestyle. Theodore Roosevelt was part Francis Parkman, part Lowell Thomas, and one hundred percent spirit of America and master of the printed page. The Man in the Arena collects self-contained excerpts from some of his greatest works, including such revealing memoirs as The Rough Riders, the Autobiography, and Through the Brazilian Wilderness, in an effort to capture the many aspects of a great American who was indeed larger than life and his own best "Boswell." "This collection of his writings gives credence to Henry Adams's assertion that Roosevelt was "pure Act": there was, it seems, no subject (or foe) he was afraid to tackle. " - Publishers Weekly

Book San Antonio 1972

Download or read book San Antonio 1972 written by Bent Larsen and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Antonio 1972 was either the strongest chess tournament ever played in the history of the United States or, if not the very strongest, then second only to New York 1924. What makes this book especially great is not merely was it a great tournament with great players, but that the players annotated some of their own games. In this day and age, there are millions of games in the chess databases, but annotated games are increasingly hard to find. This book has games annotated by Karpov, Larsen, Hort, Suttles, Mecking, Donald Byrne, Gligoric, Keres, Saidy, Portisch, Kaplan, Evans and Smith. Two games were annotated by both Larsen and Petrosian. In addition, many of the games were annotated by International Master David Levy. This book was originally published in Descriptive Chess Notation. Since that time, Descriptive has become almost obsolete. For that reason, all 120 games in this book have been converted into modern Algebraic Notation and are included in an appendix in the back of the book. The games in the back are grouped and sorted alphabetically according to the player of the white pieces. Thus, all games in which Browne played White are first, followed by the games by Byrne, Campos-Lopez, Evans, Gligoric, Hort, Kaplan, Karpov, Keres, Larsen, Mecking, Petrosian, Portisch, Saidy and Smith in that order.

This expanded version has updated commentary, and an Index of Names to Games. The book covers this most popular chess opening, especially the Najdorf, Dragon, and Sveshnikov variations. Also included are the 2.c3 Alapin, 2.d4 Smith-Morra Gambit, 2.Nc3 Closed or Grand Prix variations, 2.b4 Wing Gambit and others. This paperback version matches the 2016 paperback edition. Most of the games in this book were played by the author. Many were against masters, experts and club players over 45 years of play. The author shows you typical examples in these variations. Of special note is the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit Declined Sicilian Defence. The very same position occurs in both openings after 1.d4 d5 2.e4 c5 (BDG) or 1.e4 c5 2.d4 d5 (Sicilian Defense). Most of the games are by experts or masters. You benefit from the author's lifetime study of grandmasters who play the Sicilian Defense. They include Paulsen, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Nimzowitsch, Kotov, Botvinnik, Polugaevsky, Korchnoi, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Fischer, Larsen, Karpov, and Kasparov of old. More modern players include Anand, Leko, Gelfand, Ivanchuk, Nunn, Shirov, Svidler, Topalov and Magnus Carlsen. Follow ideas to surprise your opponent and win. Have fun playing chess. Enjoy this book!
