Book excerpt: The Black Tulip Is a work of historical fiction that mixes actual events in the Netherlands in the 17th century with fictional characters and events. The first third of the novel provides a thorough explanation of Dutch politics and culture--a stark difference from many of Dumas' other works, which launch into breakneck action from the very first page. Midway through the novel, the plot adopts the fast-paced style for which Dumas is well-known, and does not let up until the very end.

The classic novel The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas is, in my opinion, a unique and gripping blend of these genres. Written in 1850, it is a political, drama and romance, focusing on the main characters of Cornelis van Barlae and Rosa. The atmospheric setting of the novel is political chaos times in the Netherlands in the 17th century. In the beginning of the novel, Cornelis' godfather Cornelis de Witt and his brother Johan de Witt who were prime minister of the Netherlands, killed by furious people because of misunderstanding. At the same time, Haarlem Tulip Grower Association make an offer magnificent money prize who can grow the black tulip. Cornelis wants to grow black tulip but he is in trouble because of godfather's misunderstanding.

Book excerpt: On the 20th of August, 1672, the city of the Hague, always so lively, so neat, and so trim that one might believe every day to be Sunday, with its shady park, with its tall trees, spreading over its Gothic houses, with its canals like large mirrors, in which its steeples and its almost Eastern cupolas are reflected, -the city of the Hague, the capital of the Seven United Provinces, was swelling in all its arteries with a black and red stream of hurried, panting, and restless citizens, who, with their knives in their girdles, muskets on their shoulders, or sticks in their hands, were pushing on to the Buytenhof, a terrible prison, the grated windows of which are still shown, where, on the charge of attempted murder preferred against him by the surgeon Tyckelaer, Cornelius de Witt, the brother of the Grand Pensionary of Holland was confined. If the history of that time, and especially that of the year in the middle of which our narrative commences, were not indissolubly connected with the two names just mentioned, the few explanatory pages which we are about to add might appear quite supererogatory; but we will, from the very first, apprise the reader-our old friend, to whom we are wont on the first page to promise amusement, and with whom we always try to keep our word as well as is in our power-that this explanation is as indispensable to the right understanding of our story as to that of the great event itself on which it is based.Cornelius de Witt, Ruart de Pulten, that is to say, warden of the dikes, ex-burgomaster of Dort, his native town, and member of the Assembly of the States of Holland, was forty-nine years of age, when the Dutch people, tired of the Republic such as John de Witt, the Grand Pensionary of Holland, understood it, at once conceived a most violent affection for the Stadtholderate, which had been abolished for ever in Holland by the "Perpetual Edict" forced by John de Witt upon the United Provinces. As it rarely happens that public opinion, in its whimsical flights, does not identify a principle with a man, thus the people saw the personification of the Republic in the two stern figures of the brothers De Witt, those Romans of Holland, spurning to pander to the fancies of the mob, and wedding themselves with unbending fidelity to liberty without licentiousness, and prosperity without the waste of superfluity; on the other hand, the Stadtholderate recalled to the popular mind the grave and thoughtful image of the young Prince William of Orange. The brothers De Witt humoured Louis XIV., whose moral influence was felt by the whole of Europe, and the pressure of whose material power Holland had been made to feel in that marvellous campaign on the Rhine, which, in the space of three months, had laid the power of the United Provinces prostrate

About The Book The Black Tulip "The Black Tulip," published in 1850, was the last of Alexandre Dumas' more famous stories, and ranks deservedly high among the short novels of its prolific author. Dumas visited Holland in May, 1849, in order to be present at the coronation of William III. at Amsterdam, and according to Flotow, the composer, it was the king himself who told Dumas the story of "The Black Tulip," and mentioned that none of the author's romances were concerned with the Dutch. Dumas, however, never gave any credit to this anecdote, and others have alleged that Paul Lacroix, the bibliophile, who was assisting Dumas with his novels at that time, is responsible for the plot. The question can never be answered, for who can disentangle the work of Dumas from that of his army of helpers? A feature of "The Black Tulip" is that in it is the bulb, and not a human being, that is the real centre of interest. The fate of the bulb is made of first importance, and the fortunes of Cornelius van Baerle, the tulip fancier, of Boxtel, and of Rosa, the gaoler's daughter, exciting though they are, take second place. Book excerpt: “In this suspense-filled thriller, the man who ran the closing phases of the Afghan war for the Agency takes his readers on a stunning voyage of discovery through that clandestine world, from Kabul to Hong Kong and the Moscow of the Evil Empire.”—Larry Collins, co-author of Is Paris Burning? Set in the treacherous mountains of Afghanistan and the equally hazardous headquarters of the CIA Operations Directorate in Washington, The Black Tulip is a fast-paced thriller, based on real events, by the legendary spy who masterminded the plot to arm Afghan freedom fighters in their holy war against the Soviets. A longtime veteran of the CIA, Bearden knows the tricks of the trade, the price of honor, the bonds of blood, and the enduring lure of retribution. Praise for The Black Tulip “An irresistible page-turner . . . especially vivid because we know the author was a witness to events.”—The Wall Street Journal “Milt Bearden really delivers. With thirty years in the CIA to back it up, he knows what he’s talking about. . . . A terrific book.”—Robert De Niro “A heart-stopping tale of espionage and betrayal. Forget Tom Clancy: this is the real thing.”—Richard Holbrooke “A truly engrossing espionage read . . . Bearden explains how the CIA supplied Afghan guerrillas with the hardware—rockets, Stinger surface-to-air missiles, and night-vision equipment—which enabled them to chew a vastly stronger Soviet force to bloody ribbons. . . . Highly recommended.”—The Washington Times

Book The Black Tulip Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Black Tulip Classic Reprint written by Alexandre Dumas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Tulip Alexandre Dumas, or to give him his full name, Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was born at Villers-Cotterets, dep. Aisne, July 1803. His youth was somewhat idle and irregular. In 1823 he went to Paris, where he was employed for some time as a clerk in the bureau of the Due d'Orleans. Literature, however, lured from the drudgery of a clerical calling, and fame came to him in 1829, when he published "Henri Trois et sa Cour." He was a most prodigious worker, and his output during the ten years between 1844 and 1854 is without parallel in literature except, perhaps, the wonderful first decade of the author of "Waverley." "La Tulipe Noire," which is translated in the following pages, was published in 1850. In spite of the vast wealth which his literary labours brought him, Dumas's career ended in poverty. He left Paris for the last time with only two napoleons in his possession. Retiring to his son's villa at Dieppe, he died there on 5th December 1870.
