Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scapegoat, Vol. 2 of 2: A Romance Now, it befell Naomi that with the coming of the gift of hearing, the other gifts with which she had been gifted in her deafness, and the strange graces with which she had been graced, seemed suddenly to fall from her as a garment when she disrobed. It seemed as though her old sense of touch had become confused by her new sense of hearing. She lost her way in her father's house, and though she could now hear footsteps, never did she appear to know who approached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scapegoat: Illustrated This book in its present form is new to American readers, although a book under the same title, telling practically the same story, was published in America seven years ago. That was just after the passing of the Copyright Act, and the effort to meet the conditions of the new law seemed to require that the romance should be published in what I knew was an immature and wholly unsatisfactory form. This was the form in which it was being published serially in English and American journals, without the revision usually considered necessary for any piece of writing before its appearance as a book, and especially desirable in the case of the present work. The Scapegoat was written immediately after my visit to Morocco. While there I contracted a malarial trouble which for many months afterwards made literary effort doubly difficult. Nevertheless, the engagements of the periodicals in which it had been announced to appear made it necessary that I should go on with the story, and at a nervous tension that is painful to remember I carried my task through to the end. Book excerpt: Explores the paradoxical symmetry between the divine and demonic in early Jewish mystical texts. Divine Scapegoats is a wide-ranging exploration of the parallels between the heavenly and the demonic in early Jewish apocalyptical accounts. In these materials, antagonists often mirror features of angelic figures, and even those of the Deity himself, an inverse correspondence that implies a belief that the demonic realm is maintained by imitating divine reality. Andrei A. Orlov examines the sacerdotal, messianic, and creational aspects of this mimetic imagery, focusing primarily on two texts from the Slavonic pseudepigrapha: 2 Enoch and the Apocalypse of Abraham. These two works are part of a very special cluster of Jewish apocalyptic texts that exhibit features not only of the apocalyptic worldview but also of the symbolic universe of early Jewish mysticism. The Yom Kippur ritual in the Apocalypse of Abraham, the divine light and darkness of 2 Enoch, and the similarity of mimetic motifs to later developments in the Zohar are of particular importance in Orlov’s consideration.

Book Folk Devils and Moral Panics

Download or read book Folk Devils and Moral Panics written by Stanley Cohen and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Richly documented and convincingly presented' -- New Society Mods and Rockers, skinheads, video nasties, designer drugs, bogus asylum seeks and hoodies. Every era has its own moral panics. It was Stanley Cohen's classic account, first published in the early 1970s and regularly revised, that brought the term 'moral panic' into widespread discussion. It is an outstanding investigation of the way in which the media and often those in a position of political power define a condition, or group, as a threat to societal values and interests. Fanned by screaming media headlines, Cohen brilliantly demonstrates how this leads to such groups being marginalised and vilified in the popular imagination, inhibiting rational debate about solutions to the social problems such groups represent. Furthermore, he argues that moral panics go even further by identifying the very fault lines of power in society. Full of sharp insight and analysis, Folk Devils and Moral Panics is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand this powerful and enduring phenomenon. Professor Stanley Cohen is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics. He received the Sellin-Glueck Award of the American Society of Criminology (1985) and is on the Board of the International Council on Human Rights. He is a member of the British Academy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodoret’s People sheds new light on religious clashes of the mid-fifth century regarding the nature (or natures) of Christ. Adam M. Schor focuses on Theodoret, bishop of Cyrrhus, his Syrian allies, and his opponents, led by Alexandrian bishops Cyril and Dioscorus. Although both sets of clerics adhered to the Nicene creed, their contrasting theological statements led to hostilities, violence, and the permanent fracturing of the Christian community. Schor closely examines council transcripts, correspondence, and other records of communication. Using social network theory, he argues that Theodoret’s doctrinal coalition was actually a meaningful community, bound by symbolic words and traditions, riven with internal rivalries, and embedded in a wider world of elite friendship and patronage.
