Book The Birthday Bash Murder on Kauai

Download or read book The Birthday Bash Murder on Kauai written by Joseph Cools and published by . This book was released on 2014-03-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Stanger CEO of Stanger, Inc. throws a birthday party for himself, bringing to Kauai twelve of his corporate employees. He plans for events to fill the week on the beautiful island paradise, culminating in a 'birthday bash' at an elegant restaurant. From the first moment, the plans begin to unravel: someone has cancelled all the reserved activities. Even more sinister is the undercurrent of anger and hatred, mostly directed at Stanger himself, fostered by Stranger's constant criticism of his employees. His barbed remarks are both insulting and personal, to the point that each of the twelve employees have reason to loathe their boss.David Geller, a gifted information technologist and his wife, Fig are among the first to arrive at the hotel, and meet the rest of the group for drinks and pupus. In the bar, Fig meets Starlight Olson, waitress and hopeful tour operator. Starlight offers to replace all of the cancelled activities, to the delight of at least some of the employees.Fig and Starlight soon learn that Hugh Stanger is playing a dangerous game, threatening to reveal the dark secrets of his employees-secrets that some of the employees would kill to prevent coming to light. The two women play a dangerous game of their own, as they try to find out why Stanger is playing the deadly game. The killer strikes before they can prevent the murder. Fig and Starlight then find that they themselves may be the next target for the killer.Murder can be a fun thing when you read about it in a book, but not so funny when you are part of the threat, Fig says. Fig and Starlight fancy themselves amateur, but gifted sleuths as they try to prevent a murder. The theme is both dark and outrageously funny, as the two women develop their friendship in the midst of mayhem and murder. The reader will identify with Fig and Starlight as they become more and more involved in the murder and its consequences for themselves.

Someone may do anything, including murder, to keep him from exposing secrets. Fig's husband David and Starlight's boyfriend, police officer Kino, also have a dilemma: How to prevent the women from putting themselves in grave danger in their efforts at amateur detecting. The story follows the group to some of the most beautiful sights of Kauai, including the historic and beautiful Maha'ulepu trail, with treacherous rock formations that convince Fig that Kauai can be dangerous as well as beautiful. Fig and Starlight see whales, beautiful Wailua Falls, and visit the tourist sites and hidden treasures of Kauai. As the week progresses, the danger becomes more imminent, as the two women watch helplessly as the situation deteriorates. Murder seems the inevitable result, until they become so entrenched in the mystery that their own lives are endangered.

Book excerpt: Shark! The word commands immediate attention. Put the two words Great White in front of Shark & the reaction is gut-level fear. The Great White Shark is the undisputed master of two-thirds of the planet. No other creature generates quite so much horror. Every time a surfer enters the Great White's domain, he or she risks attack by Nature's most fearsome predator. But the actual odds that a surfer, swimmer or diver will be assaulted by any kind of shark are estimated to be only one in four million. Surfer Kenny Doudt is lucky to be alive. Doudt was attacked by a fifteen-foot, three-thousand-pound female Great White Shark off the north coast of Oregon in November, 1979. The attack was the northern-most recorded attack in the world. Shark experts calculated Doudt's odds for survival at one in one-hundred-fifty million. A team of world-famous surgeons called Doudt's injuries "the worst mutilation of an upper torso" they had ever seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1866 and 1969, an estimated 8,000 individuals—at least 90 percent of whom were Native Hawaiians—were sent to Molokai’s remote Kalaupapa peninsula because they were believed to have leprosy. Unwilling to accept the loss of their families, homes, and citizenship, these individuals ensured they would be accorded their rightful place in history. They left a powerful testimony of their lives in the form of letters, petitions, music, memoirs, and oral history interviews. Kalaupapa combines more than 200 hours of interviews with archival documents, including over 300 letters and petitions written by the earliest residents translated from Hawaiian. It has long been assumed that those sent to Kalaupapa were unconcerned with the world they were forced to leave behind. The present work shows that residents remained actively interested and involved in life beyond Kalaupapa. They petitioned the Hawaii Legislative Assembly in 1874, seeking justice. They fervently supported Queen Liliuokalani and the Hawaiian Kingdom prior to annexation and contributed to the relief effort in Europe following World War I. In 1997 Kalaupapa residents advocated at the United Nations together with people affected by leprosy from around the world. This book presents at long last the story of Kalaupapa as told by its people.

Book excerpt: In The Doomsday Mother, bestselling true crime author John Glatt tells the twisted tale of Lori Vallow, accused of having her two children murdered to start a new life with her new husband, doomsday prepper Chad Daybell. At first, the residents of Kauai Beach Resort took little notice of their new neighbors. The glamorous blonde and her tall husband fit the image of the ritzy gated community. The couple seemed to keep to themselves—until the police knocked on their door with a search warrant. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell had fled to Hawaii in the midst of being investigated for the disappearance of Lori’s children back in Idaho—Tylee and JJ—who hadn’t been seen alive in five months. For years, Lori Vallow had been devoted to her children and her Mormon faith. But when her path crossed with Chad Daybell, a religious zealot who taught his followers how to prepare for the end-times, the tumultuous relationship transformed her into someone unrecognizable. As authorities searched for Lori’s children, they uncovered more suspicious deaths with links to both Lori and Chad, including the death of Lori’s third and fourth husbands, her brother, and Chad’s wife. In June 2020, the gruesome remains of JJ and Tylee were discovered on Chad’s property, and the newlyweds were arrested and charged with murder. And in a shocking development, horrifying statements revealed that the couple’s fanatical beliefs had convinced them the children had become zombies--a belief that may have led to their deaths. Bestselling author and journalist John Glatt takes readers deeper into the devastating story of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell in an attempt to unravel the lethal relationship of this doomsday couple.
