Book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint written by Margaret Coulson Walker and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings In most cases they are birds of conspicuous plumage, these being most easily recognised. To avoid monotomy, all decriptions have been relegated to the appendix. An attempt has been made to enlist sympathy with, as well as to awaken interest in, bird life, for the interest without sympathy, in this case, would only encourage the naturally destructive instincts of childhood. For the purpose of showing the importance of birds in literature, as well as for the purpose of calling into play the aesthetic faculty, poems and legends have been included. All hackneyed poems have been avoided. For their generous permission to use valuable copy-righted material, intebtedness is gratefully acknowledged to Houghton, Miffin & Co., Small, Maynard & Co., D. Appleton & Co., and Our Dumb Animals Publishing Co.; to Mrs. Margaret Sangster, Mr. Eben Rexford, Mr. Clinton Scollard, and Mr. Frank Dempster Sherman. For the photographic illustrations, I am especially indebted to Mr. Francis Hobart Herrick, an earnest bird student and an enthusiastic photographer, who has kindly permitted me the use of some of the remarkably fine photographs used in illustrating his interesting book, The Home Life of Wild Birds, a book with which all bird students are already familiar. Mr. Frank M. Chapman, Mr. A. R. Dugmore, Mr. John Cameron, Miss Ruth Shutts, Mr. James Miller, and the Recreation Publishing Co., have also assisted me in the same way. Want of space precludes the individual mention of a number of my associates to whom I am indebted for both counsel and good-natured critism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Calcutta There Is nothing to oh'oose in the matter of gloss and richnesjs OI plumage between the male and female Crows, but the former' s bigger head and bill will distinguish him easily if both are seen together the difference In feature is hardly marked enough to sex any Crow by itself. Young Crows when they leave the nest have light blue eyes and pink mouths, but they do not look innocent on that account - rather, with their duller, shabbier plum age, more blackguardly than their dark-eyed, black mawed parents; the Old Crow being, if anything, rather blacker inside than out, as far as one can see When he opens his mouth to caw. Book Birds of a Feather Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of a Feather Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of a Feather You remember the old proverb, "Birds of a feather flock together"? These stories of the faults and confessions, the lessons and rewards, the mistakes and amendments of children like yourselves, are "birds of a feather" in many respects, and so "flock together" naturally in this little book which I have the pleasure of presenting to you. In respect of age and relationship, and affection for one another, in love of fun, and faculty for mischief, - and also, I think, in many higher and holier faculties, - you are yourselves "birds of a feather." May you always "flock together" for all good and beautiful purposes; encouraging each other's efforts, avoiding each other's faults, sympathizing tenderly in each other's joy and sorrow, until you plume your wings to those upper spheres where "birds of a feather flock together" with endless song and rejoicing. Book Twelve Months With the Birds and Poets Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twelve Months With the Birds and Poets Classic Reprint written by Samuel A. Harper and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Months With the Birds and Poets This study of birds and poets is divided into twelve chapters, one for each month of the year, beginning with April, the opening of the birds' year. The birds are discussed in the month most appropriate to them by reason of habits of nesting, migration or other distinguishing characteristics. This plan enables the reader to live through the year with the birds, and to learn when to look for them. The observations were made in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, and the book may be used as a safe guide for the study of the more common birds of this latitude from the Rocky Mountains east to the Atlantic seaboard. Book Birds of the Plains Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of the Plains Classic Reprint written by Douglas Dewar and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the Plains It is easy enough to write a book. The difficulty is to sell the production when it is finished. That, however, is not the author's business. Nevertheless, the labours of the writer are not over when he has completed the last paragraph of his book. He has, then, in most cases, to find a title for it. This, I maintain, should be a matter of little difficulty. I regard a title as a mere distinguishing mark, a brand, a label, a something by which the book may be called when spoken of - nothing more. According to this view, the value of a title lies, not in its appropriateness to the subject-matter, but in its distinctiveness. To illustrate: some years ago a lady entered a bookseller's shop and asked for "Drummond's latest book - Nux Vomica." The bookseller without a word handed her Lux Mundi. To my way of thinking Lux Mundi is a good title inasmuch as no other popular book has one like it. So distinctive is it that even when different words were substituted the bookseller at once knew what was intended. A mist rose from moist fields, and hung over the whole country side as if it were November; the june of I8I5 was wet and chill, as June so often is. And as the mist hung over the land. So a certain sense of doubt and anxiety hung over the hearts of man and beast and bird. War was in the air as well as mist; and everything wanted warmth and peace to help it to carry out its appointed work; to Cheer it with a feeling of.
