Though he never became as famous as John Muir, Increase Lapham, or Aldo Leopold, he was similar to these naturalists in that he possessed an unparalleled knowledge of (and respect for) the natural world in this part of Wisconsin. He made an indelible impression on many, including the Wisconsin writers Walter Havighurst, Lorine Neidecker, and Sterling North. Born to a wealthy family in Skaraborg, Sweden, in 1819, Kumlein was well educated and allowed free-rein to pursue his first love: collecting bird, plant, and mammal specimens. As a young man, he attended Uppsala University (where Carl Linneas taught), studied with the great botanist Professor Elias Fries, and traveled to the Baltic Islands to collect birds and plants. He and his wife, Christine, were some of the first Swedes to emigrate to Wisconsin, settling near Lake Koshkonong in 1843. After arriving in Wisconsin, Thure's reputation quietly spread as a man who knew about the natural world. In the years before and during the Civil War, he sent specimens such as bird skins, eggs, and nests, to museums and collectors in Europe and the Eastern United States, including the Smithsonian. He later taught languages and science at nearby Albion Academy, including to his young neighbor and friend, Edward Lee Greene, who went on to become a prominent botanist. Kumlien worked for the young University of Wisconsin preparing natural history exhibits for the university and normal schools. Book excerpt: Stroud had received permission from the warden at Alcatraz to write a penal history, but bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., balked when they reviewed his manuscript. The top brass hastily created new rules for inmate authors, forbidding the publication of any inmate's work that was obscene, criticized the prison system, or glorified crime. Stroud was transferred in 1959 to the US Federal Medical Prison for chronically ill inmates in Springfield, Missouri, where he died in November, 1963. Martin, the Missouri attorney, was named administrator of Stroud's estate and gained custody of the manuscripts in lieu of compensation for his legal services. Martin tried to hawk the prison history manuscript to publishers, but they expressed little or no interest. "Some said it was too long. Others were afraid of being sued for libel because Stroud wrote about living people -- corrupt prison officials, sadistic guards and brutalized prisoners," Martin said. "Others said no one was interested in the prison system, or that history doesn't sell. Some of the great stories in literature are prison stories. I guess they hadn't read 'The Count of Monte Cristo' or 'The Gulag Archipelago, '" Martin said. Martin insists that Stroud's observations on the U.S. prison system are still relevant today. "I think it's a work of great social value. We're still trying to answer the questions that Stroud raised," he said. "The number of Americans incarcerated is greater than ever before. It costs a lot of money to incarcerate people. What do we get in return for it? Do we get a better person than what went in, or a worse person?"

Book excerpt: This volume examines images and beliefs related to birdmen among Incas and other peoples of South America, and the transformation of that phenomena in the colonial era by Christian missionaries. The author brings to light previously-unknown images of Saint Francis of Assisi with wings, flying through the air as a militant angel of the Apocalypse. Although commissioned by the Franciscan friars, these works of painting and sculpture were executed by native artists with native sensibilities. They reveal a social critique of colonial society, an expectation of an approaching end of the world, and a controversial role for Francis of Assisi at a final cosmic battle. Natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, combined with mythology, prophecy, piety and public performance, assert a "Franciscan exceptionalism" at a crucial time in Latin American history. A side trip to colonial Mexico reveals that similar dynamics were occurring there, but with different artistic solutions. Birdman of Assisi documents how a beloved medieval saint gained new life among Incas and other native civilizations of the Americas, and continues to fascinate their descendants today.
