The limited literature consists of records of species scattered through a number of publications, some of which are inaccessible to the general public. Considerable unre corded material having accumulated, it seems opportune to publish this present report in order to place in the hands of naturalists and the general public such information as we have, bringing together into compact form the records heretofore published, and adding to them the unpublished material, so far as the same has come to our attention. Environmental Conditions. - Colorado has an area of about square miles, a latitudinal extent of about 276 miles and a longitudinal extent of about 375 miles. It is traversed from north to south, irregularly, by the continental divide - the backbone of the conti nent - its waters draining into two oceans. Its rock formations represent all the geological systems except possibly the Silurian. Though its average altitude is only approximately feet, it varies in altitude from less than feet to over feet above sea level, with consequent differences in climatic and other environmental conditions. The mean annual rainfall varies in a general way with altitude and topography, from less than 10 inches to 30 inches or more. Data as to temperatures in the larger and higher masses of mountains are as yet very meager, but it may be said that the temperature at elevations of from to feet drops to a point below freezing nightly even in summer time, while the mean temperature for the warmest months in some of the lower portions of the state is nearly eighty degrees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amphibia of the Indo-Australian Archipelago: With 29 Illustrations In the preface to the two volumes of this series, describing the Reptiles of the indo-australian Archipelago, I have given a short history about the work on the Vertebrates of Dutch East-India. It began with the publication of a work on the fishes of the Archipelago of which four volumes have already appeared. With the valuable cooperation of Dr. J. C. Koningsberger, while director of 's Lands Plantentuin at Buitenzorg, Java, and later on with that of his successor Dr. W. M. Docters Van Leeuwen, the original plan got successively a wider scope and the preparation of a series of handbooks of the vertebrate fauna of the Archipelago was recommended. In 1912 the aid of the government was gained for the publication of the two quoted volumes about the Reptiles, which were issued in 1915 and 1917. It was then allowed to presume, that the governmental aid would also be bestowed upon a volume describing the indo-australian Amphibia, which was under preparation by Prof. P. N. van Kampen. However, in 1921, when the manuscript of his work was finished, the economical situation was so totally changed, that there was no chance to get the financial support from the government, necessary for issuing the volume. This financial dilemna was solved by the "Zoologisch Insulindefonds," by the "Gresshoff-Rumphius-fonds" and by the "Leidsch Universiteitsfonds," who were ready to support the finances. All those who are interested in the fauna of this region are therefore indebted to the councils of these institutions, and it is a pleasing duty of thanking them for their valuable help so cordially given. The larval Rana sylvatica he found to be the most effective, as these devoured the macerated flesh, leaving a ligamentous skeleton. Their food primarily is vegetable, and it is probable that they never attack their own Species unless driven by hunger or after they have attained a good degree of development.
