Book The Behavioural Biology of Chickens

Download or read book The Behavioural Biology of Chickens written by Christine J Nicol and published by CABI. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chickens are by far the world’s most widely farmed animal, kept for both meat and egg production. They are at the centre of many debates regarding housing and production systems, causing significant interest in what lies behind chicken behaviour. This accessible book covers sensory biology, behavioural development, preferences and aversions, social behaviour, learning and cognition, behavioural issues in different systems and solutions for behavioural problems. Authored by an authority on chicken ethology, it brings together the fields of animal behaviour, neuroscience, psychology and epidemiology to provide a comprehensive understanding of chicken behaviour and help improve the lives of farmed chickens around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of Poultry Keeping If these five things are realized in a poultry house the birds will thrive and be productive in it, provided they are well and regularly fed and watered. It makes no difference particularly to the well - being of the birds how these necessary specifications of their dwelling are attained. To the poultryman, however. It is important that they be attained at the smallest expense, hav ing regard to (a) initial cost. (b) repairs and up - keep and (cl labor necessary to operate the house to get the specified results The housing problem is to the poultryman, then. Both a biologi cal and an economic one. The biological solution is definite. The requisites named above must be met, and there is one addi tional factor to be taken into account: namely size of house. Experiments made at various times and places indicate clearly that in northern climates, where birds must be shut up in the house during a part, of the Year in order to give best results. There should be allowed in the house at least three square feet of floor space per bird and preferably a little more. Four square feet floor space per bird is a liberal allowance. Part of the Poultry Science Symposium Series.

Book Genetics and Evolution of the Domestic Fowl

Download or read book Genetics and Evolution of the Domestic Fowl written by Lewis Stevens and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-11-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of genetics has undergone a period of very rapid and significant development in recent years, and the area of poultry genetics has been no exception. This book provides a balanced and up-to-date account of all the major areas of this subject from Mendelian to modern molecular genetics. The book begins by tracing the evolution of Gallus domesticus from its avian ancestors. Subsequent chapters cover important aspects of poultry genetics, including cytogenetics, transmission genetics, gene mapping, sex linkage, lethal genes, genetics of feathering and plumage, and quantitative genetics. In each chapter, a concise explanation of the genetic principles is followed by a full discussion illustrated by key examples. In the latter part of the book, recent advances in gene cloning and sequencing are examined. The impact of these exciting new developments on our understanding of gene structure and organisation, immunogenetics and the evolution of proteins is assessed. Finally, the uses of transgenic techniques and their implications are discussed. This book provides a clear and useful survey of the genetics and evolution of the domestic fowl, which will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of genetics, agriculture and veterinary medicine, as well as to poultry breeders (both commercial and non-commercial).

Book The Welfare of Domestic Fowl and Other Captive Birds

Download or read book The Welfare of Domestic Fowl and Other Captive Birds written by Ian J. H. Duncan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare is attracting increasing interest worldwide, especially in developed countries where the knowledge and resources are available to (at least potentially) provide better management systems for farm animals, as well as companion, zoo and laboratory animals. The key requirements for adequate food, water, a suitable environment, appropriate companionship and good health are important for animals kept for all of these purposes. There has been increased attention given to farm animal welfare in many co- tries in recent years. This derives largely from the fact that the relentless pursuit of nancial reward and ef ciency, to satisfy market demands, has led to the devel- ment of intensive animal production systems that challenge the conscience of many consumers in those countries. In developing countries, human survival is still a daily uncertainty, so that p- vision for animal welfare has to be balanced against human needs. Animal welfare is usually a priority only if it supports the output of the animal, be it food, work, clothing, sport or companionship. In principle the welfare needs of both humans and animals can be provided for, in both developing and developed countries, if resources are properly husbanded. In reality, however, the inequitable division of the world’s riches creates physical and psychological poverty for humans and a- mals alike in many parts of the world.

Book An Introduction to Form and Feathering of the Domestic Fowl

Download or read book An Introduction to Form and Feathering of the Domestic Fowl written by Brian Reeder and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-05-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this introduction to the genetics of form and feathering of the domestic fowl you will fi nd a straightforward method that allows anyone, beginner or advanced hobbyist, to understand how the major genes of form and feathering come together to create the silhouette that is the hallmark of each breed. Beginning with a discussion of the skeleton genes, then moving to muscling genes, feathering genes and fi nally to comb genes, an understanding of the layers that make the silhouette is revealed. From this system of understanding how the silhouette is formed, one can then understand what really makes one breed unique from another. All of the genes presented herein are found in the commonly seen exhibition breeds and many hobbyists will be familiar with these breeds, but may be less familiar with the genetic factors involved. This volume is a wonderful tool for learning the basis of how the breeds are made, how their respective forms are derived from separate genes of form and feathering, and how those genes all come together to make the one visual impression that we consider a breed. There is in fact no one single gene which makes the form of any given breed. Many genes are required to derive each type and the combination of those many genes creates the silhouette. As you will see from the many silhouette illustrations in this book, once you know a breed, it is instantly recognizable from its silhouette alone. In addition to the discussion of the genes, there is a discussion of basic genetic concepts and of the complex and often confusing method of quantitative selection that is very applicable to many of the genes described herein. This book presents a very clear system for learning about the genetics of form and feathering in the domestic fowl and is written to be understood by the young and beginners alike.
