Book SERGEANT MICHAEL CASSIDY OTHER WAR STORIES 67 Short Stories in One Edition

Download or read book SERGEANT MICHAEL CASSIDY OTHER WAR STORIES 67 Short Stories in One Edition written by H. C. McNeile, Sapper and published by Musaicum Books. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all device. Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. McNeile's stories are either directly about the war, or contain people whose lives have been shaped by it. His war stories were considered by contemporary audiences as anti-sentimental, realistic depictions of the trenches, and as a "celebration of the qualities of the Old Contemptibles". McNeile's view, as expressed through his writing, was that war was a purposeful activity for the nation and for individuals, even if that purpose was later wasted: a "valuable chance at national renewal that had been squandered". The positive effects of war on the individual were outlined by McNeile, in The Lieutenant and Others and Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E, in which he wrote about "the qualities of leadership and selflessness essential to 'inspire' subalterns". His war stories include descriptions of fights between individuals that carry a sporting motif: in Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E., he writes, "To bag a man with a gun is one thing; there is sport—there is an element of one against one, like when the quality goes big game shooting. But to bag twenty men by a mine has not the same feeling at all, even if they are Germans" Content: Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E. • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Signs of Life written by Stephen Fabes and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young doctor cycles around the world and discovers how societies treat their most vulnerable, in this thought-provoking and witty medical odyssey When Stephen Fabes left his job as an emergency-room doctor and set out to cycle around the world, frontline medicine quickly faded from his mind. The daily challenges of life on the road stack up as he navigates deserts—coaxing a few more miles from ‘Ol’ Patchy’ (his most faithful innertube)—and learns to live with the seeming constant threat posed by local wildlife, be it mangy dogs in Indonesia, grizzly bears in Alaska, or, in Australia, the common death adder, three words he was dismayed to find exist in sequence. But leaving medicine behind was not as easy as it seems. As Stephen crossed continents—on a journey that would take six years and cover more than 53,000 miles—he finds people whose health has suffered through exile, stigma, or circumstance and others, whose lives have been saved through kindness and community. After encountering a frozen body of a monk in the Himalayas, he is drawn ever more to healthcare at the margins of the world, to crumbling sanitoriums and refugee camps, to city dumps and war-torn hospital wards. In this gripping blend of true adventure and medical narrative, Stephen learns the value of listening to lives—not just solving diagnostic puzzles. Signs of Life challenges us to see care for the sick as a duty born of our compassion and our humanity.

Book The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World

Download or read book The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World written by Major Taylor and published by Microcosm Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1878, bicycle racer Marshall "Major" Taylor became the first Black sports star to become a global celebrity when he won the world cycling championship in 1899. Throughout his bike-racing career, he won awards and set records on and off the track. But in his native United States, he faced racist discrimination and violence at every turn, causing him to spend most of his time in Europe where fans saw his value. After he retired from racing, Taylor wrote and published his autobiography and traveled the world promoting it. Written in the 1920s, his story feels fresh, contemporary, and readable. His life was too short, but his legacy lives on in the many organizations and clubs that bear his name, and the generations of new cyclists who look up to him. His intelligence, good humor, and global perspective shine through on every page in this candid account of a remarkable life. This new edition features an introduction by bicycle advocate Adonia Lugo, author of Bicycle / Race, as well as a foreward by Ayesha McGowan, the first Black US woman to be a member of a professional road cycling team.

Book More Reid s Short Stories

Download or read book More Reid s Short Stories written by Alex S. Reid and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I doubt that one person would claim to have written a book without help. I certainly wouldn?t. Mary, my wonderful wife of 52 years, along with my family have encouraged me through thick and thin. Friends have helped in many ways. Then there are those I?ve met through life who?ve provided the rich material. When asked, ?Where do you get your ideas for a story I laugh because they?re all around. In my search for an illustrator, I contacted the art teacher at our local High School. One student, Arianna Palmer was thrilled at the opportunity of being published. When I saw her work, I too was excited. Thank you, Arianna, for your wonderful work. I know Rand Darrow from Books Etc., our Macedon, NY, local writers group. Rand is both author and illustrator of, Witches, Wolves and Water Spirits. He illustrated my story, Purple Man. Thanks Rand. Thank you, Paul Bagdon, my mentor, advisor and editor of my stories for sixteen years. Your encouragement has been invaluable. Paul has authored thirty-four books including, Deserter, Bad Medicine and The Busted Thumb Horse Ranch. Since a small boy growing up in England, writing short stories has been my passion. They remained hidden away until I retired and enjoyed the time to prepare them for publication. My experiences in Britain and America provided the material for these stories. The incidents, and adventures, both real and imagined are the paint for these, my pictures, illustrating my love of colorful people and of life. Some are funny, some sad, a few are strange, but all are interesting, and reflect life with its many unexpected twists and turns.
