This ethos exists today in small town Kentucky and Indiana but struggles to survive in West Virginia. Part of the reason is the state's population decline since the 1950s. Book excerpt: Please-Don't-Rain Suitcase is a fictional novel that tells the story of the hardships and adjustments that Blake Davis experiences when he becomes an orphan. The story highlights the emotions he feels when he loses everything in life that matters to him. He is forced to put the shattered pieces of his life together and move forward through his tears, grief, fears of the unknown, feelings of hopelessness and emptiness, and the loss of dreams. In 1950, eight-year-old Blake Davis is thrown into foster care after his mother dies and his father is unable to care for him and his siblings. The Welfare Department intervenes, and the siblings are split up and scattered. Blake's story highlights the good and bad experiences that he lives through in foster care and later in an orphanage. Blake is placed in three different foster homes over a six-year period. He experiences both good and bad foster care. Blake is powerless and at the mercy of his caregivers. Not having a mother or father to intervene in his well-being leaves him vulnerable to abuse. The instability of foster care makes it impossible for Blake to put down roots. At the age of fourteen, Blake is placed in an orphanage in Western North Carolina. The story follows Blake through his years in the orphanage and how the orphanage helps prepare him for life in the outside world. When he graduates from high school, the orphanage sends him out into the world with a Bible, a twenty-dollar bill, and a please-don't-rain cardboard suitcase. All his belongings are packed into the one flimsy suitcase. Blake's story follows him into life outside the orphanage and focuses on how he copes and overcomes the circumstances of his shattered life in his search of love, happiness, and the place where he fits best in the world.

Book The Sons of Westwood

Download or read book The Sons of Westwood written by John Matthew Smith and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, the UCLA dynasty defined college basketball. In twelve seasons from 1964 to 1975, John Wooden's teams won ten national titles, including seven consecutive championships. The Bruins made history by breaking numerous records, but they also rose to prominence during a turbulent age of political unrest and youthful liberation. When Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton--the most famous college basketball players of their generation--spoke out against racism, poverty, and the Vietnam War, they carved out a new role for athletes, casting their actions on and off the court in a political light. The Sons of Westwood tells the story of the most significant college basketball program at a pivotal period in American cultural history. It weaves together a story of sports and politics in an era of social and cultural upheaval, a time when college students and college athletes joined the civil rights movement, demonstrated against the Vietnam War, and rejected the dominant Cold War culture. This is the story of America's culture wars played out on the basketball court by some of college basketball's most famous players and its most memorable coach.

Book A Lynching in the Bible Belt

Download or read book A Lynching in the Bible Belt written by Mitchell S. Wagner and published by Trafford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a true story, A Lynching in the Bible Belt is an interraccial love story intertwined with a young lawyer's pursuit of justice against a wealthy white supremacist, who, in the guise of Christianity and under distortions of scripture, espouses racism and contempt for "race mixing" and incites a member of his religious fellowship to lynch an African-American high school student and his white girlfriend. Subplots include how the young lawyer gains strength and courage from his upbringing, from his best friend from childhood, and from the woman he loves, and stands up to prejudice after having lived with guilt over his own silence when confronted with prejudice in the past. The story explores the institutional prejudice that still prevades the field of law, how tolerance and racism are both passed on in families from one generation to the next, and the problems of interracial romance in the face of family prejudice. Ultimately, however, the story is about friendship, love, courage, and how they triumph over prejudice. A Lynching in the Bible Belt includes much courtroom drama, including, for sake of accuracy and authenticity, actual legal cases and principles of law, drawing from the author's experience as a trial lawyer.

Book Bird Uncaged

Download or read book Bird Uncaged written by Marlon Peterson and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a leading prison abolitionist, a moving memoir about coming of age in Brooklyn and surviving incarceration—and a call to break free from all the cages that confine us. Marlon Peterson grew up in 1980s Crown Heights, raised by Trinidadian immigrants. Amid the routine violence that shaped his neighborhood, Marlon became a high-achieving and devout child, the specter of the American dream opening up before him. But in the aftermath of immense trauma, he participated in a robbery that resulted in two murders. At nineteen, Peterson was charged and later convicted. He served ten long years in prison. While incarcerated, Peterson immersed himself in anti-violence activism, education, and prison abolition work. In Bird Uncaged, Peterson challenges the typical “redemption” narrative and our assumptions about justice. With vulnerability and insight, he uncovers the many cages—from the daily violence and trauma of poverty, to policing, to enforced masculinity, and the brutality of incarceration—created and maintained by American society. Bird Uncaged is a twenty-first-century abolitionist memoir, and a powerful debut that demands a shift from punishment to healing, an end to prisons, and a new vision of justice.
