Book The Bible as a Community Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bible as a Community Book Classic Reprint written by Arthur E. Holt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible as a Community Book Away out on the edge of civilization where Sage Brush Mesa joins on to Sucker Flats lies the frontier region of No-Man's Land. Its inhabitants first came in search of isolation and in the hope that they might escape the problems of living together which confronted them in the more thickly settled communities. The first person to offer a solution of the problem was Dead-Eye Dick, the crack shot of all this district. He sought to build a community based on fear of himself. He acquired an authority which few dared to dispute. Armed to the teeth with the latest man-killing instruments, he ruled over the length and breadth of No-Man's Land. But Dead-Eye Dick came to grief because while it is always possible for one man to be stronger than another man it is very hard for one man to be stronger than two men. One night in a saloon, led by a fellow called Combination Bill, a gang fell upon Dead-Eye Dick, and his authority was at an end. Because this gang had learned the secret of strength in combination, for a long time they held sway over the district between Sage Brush Mesa and Sucker Flats. But their secret was soon discovered and other gangs were formed who disputed their authority, and there was war incessant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building a Community This volume is one in a series of texts in religious education known as the Judson Training Manuals for the School of the Church. These manuals are arranged in three groups, namely, general, departmental, and parent-training. The general group includes vital teaching, story-telling, educational evangelism, expression through worship, handwork, community service, appreciation of the Bible, educational leadership, and kindred worth-while themes in the field of religious education. The departmental group covers courses for every department of the school of the church - Cradle Roll, Beginners', Primary, Junior, etc. The parent-training manuals emphasize religion in the home and the necessity of training for the God-given, heaven-blessed privilege of parenthood. It is the aim of these manuals to popularize the assured results of the best psychology and pedagogy and to make them the willing and efficient servants of all workers in the school of the church. Both the editors and the writers want these books "to live where the people live" and to be of real value to those forward-looking folk destined to be the leaders in religious education. Book The Community Daily Vacation Bible School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Community Daily Vacation Bible School Classic Reprint written by E. C. Knapp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Community Daily Vacation Bible School This book is not primarily concerned with the Denominational Daily Vacation Bible School but with the community school. Its appeal is especially to the community which has two or more churches and which wishes to conduct a Community Daily Vacation Bible School. Prof. Norman E. Richardson, in his introduction to "The Vacation Religious Day School," by Stafford, says: "If religious training is to be universal for our country, it must be organized and maintained by all the churches acting together. The community is a natural unit in our national life. An adequate program of religious education for a community involves many problems which can be solved only by community co-operation." He also adds: "The program of the vacation session can make use of the prevailing play-spirit without in any way invalidating the educational efficiency of the work. Play is not incompatible with childhood religion." In the dozen or more vacation schools which we have conducted during the past four summers, we have tried to keep before us those two things - the community idea and the play-spirit. We have done many things which the average vacation school does not do and we have left undone many things which many schools have done. Download or read book A People of One Book written by Timothy Larsen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Victorians were awash in texts, the Bible was such a pervasive and dominant presence that they may fittingly be thought of as 'a people of one book'. They habitually read the Bible, quoted it, adopted its phraseology as their own, thought in its categories, and viewed their own lives and experiences through a scriptural lens. This astonishingly deep, relentless, and resonant engagement with the Bible was true across the religious spectrum from Catholics to Unitarians and beyond. The scripture-saturated culture of nineteenth-century England is displayed by Timothy Larsen in a series of lively case studies of representative figures ranging from the Quaker prison reformer Elizabeth Fry to the liberal Anglican pioneer of nursing Florence Nightingale to the Baptist preacher C. H. Spurgeon to the Jewish author Grace Aguilar. Even the agnostic man of science T. H. Huxley and the atheist leaders Charles Bradlaugh and Annie Besant were thoroughly and profoundly preoccupied with the Bible. Serving as a tour of the diversity and variety of nineteenth-century views, Larsen's study presents the distinctive beliefs and practices of all the major Victorian religious and sceptical traditions from Anglo-Catholics to the Salvation Army to Spiritualism, while simultaneously drawing out their common, shared culture as a people of one book.
