Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treasury of photos capturing the end of an era in transportation history—the final decade of steam locomotives in Britain. Malcolm Clegg has been taking railway pictures since the early 1960s, and also enjoys access to collections taken by friends who were recording the steam railway scene during this period. In this book, he covers a wide variety of classes of locomotives that were withdrawn during the last decade of steam traction, examples of some of which are now preserved. This book is a record of his and other peoples’ journeys during the last decade of steam in the 1960s, with photographs and informative captions looking at steam traction in a wide variety of geographical locations around the British Railways network.

Book The Best of the Last Days of Steam

Download or read book The Best of the Last Days of Steam written by Colin Gordon Maggs and published by Motorbooks International. This book was released on 1993 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its heyday, the variety of steam on Britain's railways was unrivalled - from thundering express trains to hard-working tank engines - and it offered a tremendous range of possibilities for the enthusiastic steam photographer. The Best of The Last Days of Steam brings together the pick of this wealth of images captured during the 1950s and early 1960s, the last years when 'railways' still meant 'steam'. Famous companies and engines are represented alongside small branch services and behind-the-scenes views of locomotive sheds. The photographs are reproduced in high quality duotone and accompanied by informative captions conveying something of the feeling and atmosphere of those heady days. Often the backdrops and glimpses of railway life are almost as interesting as the locomotives themselves, ranging from country stations to busy London terminii and from isolated mountain routes to intricate urban junctions - all of this is captured on film. The result is a superb and evocative collection of well over a hundred photographs, drawn from all over the British Isles, providing a marvellous wide-ranging record of an era now gone and lost for ever. It will be of interest to all railway enthusiasts and to everyone who retains a nostalgia for the last days of steam.

Book Fading Steam

Download or read book Fading Steam written by Malcolm Holdsworth and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up until the mid-1980s there were so many steam locomotives operating around the globe that one could imagine great photo opportunities presenting themselves and flickering out on a second by second basis. At the start of the second decade of the new millennium this potential has been all but extinguished. It is nice to be able to dig back and recapture the way it was. Regular service steam operation occasionally delivered the right loco on the right train to the right place with all other factors - sun, wind, smoke, time of day, light angle, steam leaks - on their best behaviour. Far more often one or more elements didn't co-operate and there was no opportunity to get on the two way radio and call for another runpast. This was a challenge, and so many of these photos are to be regarded as archival photos of days past rather than technically excellent photos.

Book excerpt: China was the last country in the world to build steam locomotives. The final main line engines emerged from Datong workshops in December 1988 and production of steam locomotives for industrial use continued until 1999. The final few steam locomotives were withdrawn from service in 2003, making China the last country to use steam on its main lines. Total eradication of China's steam programme is set to coincide with the Olympic games in 2008. When this happens, it will be the end of the last mecca for fans of real steam. This is a photo essay detailing the end of this era.

Book excerpt: The thrilling story of the last, and greatest, generation of steam railway locomotives in regular main line service: a story of invention, skill and passion, Giants of Steam reveals how the true advocates of steam's glory days pushed its design and performance to remarkable limits, taking these powerful and beautifully designed machines to new heights against a backdrop of the political upheavals and military conflicts of the mid twentieth century. Glancey tells the stories of the greatest of the 'steam men', the charismatic engineers who designed these machines and put them to use. Giants of Steam also reveals how steam design has continued to progress against the odds in recent decades, while enthusiasm for the steam locomotive itself is far from burning out.
