Book The Best of Nebraska Bohemians

Download or read book The Best of Nebraska Bohemians written by Dan Sanley and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Nebraska Bohemians" is a social media (Facebook) page that was created to honor our Czech immigrant ancestors. This book records some of the contributions made on the page.Bohemians, now called Czech Americans, who are living in Nebraska make up 5.5% of the state's population, the largest percentage of any state. The term "Bohemians" was not intended to exclude any specific group of Czechs. While Bohemia is a region of the Czech Republic, as are Moravia and Silesia, today these Czech speakers are referred to as Czechs. The term "Bohemians" was used to refer to all early Czech speaking immigrants to America as the Czechs did not have their own country. They came under Austrian-Hungarian rule but did not consider themselves, and weren't, Austrians or Hungarians. The term Bohemian is English and does not come from the Czech language. If you were to attempt to translate Bohemia to Czech it would be Čechy, relating to the region of Bohemia in the Czech Republic. The adjective Bohemian is český. Even the early language in America was called Bohemian or in Czech, český jazyk. Do not confuse Bohemian with bohemian. The bohemian lifestyle really has nothing to do with being a Bohemian. The Nebraska Bohemians page uses both words of Bohemians and Czechs interchangeably. The term Bohemians was used especially when referring to the past. The selected contributions published in this book come from a wide assortment of posts to the Facebook page. They should answer many of the questions for those who may not fully understand who the Czech immigrants were. This includes even today's descendants who didn't have the opportunity to learn from their ancestors. We must never forget who we are and from where we came. This book is dedicated to keeping that memory alive.

Book Lost Restaurants of Omaha

Download or read book Lost Restaurants of Omaha written by Kim Reiner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omaha is known for its beef, but the history of its most famous restaurants goes far beyond. The French Café was the place to go to celebrate. Piccolo Pete's, Mister C's and Bohemian Café helped shape neighborhoods in Little Italy, North Omaha and Little Bohemia. The tales of restaurateurs like the tragic Tolf Hanson; the ever-optimistic Ross Lorello; Anthony Oddo, once a resident at Boys Town; and Giuseppa Marcuzzo, a former bootlegger, also tell the story of the city. Restaurants played a prominent role as history unfolded in Omaha during prohibition, wartime rations, the fight for equal rights and westward expansion. Author Kim Reiner details the fascinating history behind Omaha's classic eateries.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . . now a #1 Netflix series! In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer's end they've become TullyandKate. Inseparable. So begins Kristin Hannah's magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives. From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness. Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn't know is how being a wife and mother will change her . . . how she'll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she'll envy her famous best friend. . . . For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship---jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they've survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . . and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test. Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone's Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it's the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It's about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you'll never forget . . . one you'll want to pass on to your best friend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brown Bō'hēmians captures the essence and voice of an underrepresented demographic: creative people of color. Influenced by a deeply held belief that stories sculpt our collective narrative, a group of authors and artists came together to create this first-of-its-kind collection. Inspired by their unique tastes and experiences in fashion, lifestyle, and art, Brown Bō'hēmians brings a vital and virtual movement, born on social media, to life and into print. People of color are the originators of all things, yet are all too often overlooked. Each of our stories is unique, but collectively they contribute to the rebuilding of community, and counter hundreds of years of colonialism, narrow minded and harmful media representation, non-inclusive and conformist beauty standards, and a systemic, historical lack of recognition for our contributions. Brown Bō'hēmians reclaims a small piece of a space that has always been rightfully ours. Created to recognize and elevate the underrepresented and the undervalued, Brown Bō'hēmians is food for the creative spirit that most needs it: you.
