Download or read book Going Deep written by Cris Carter and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Wideouts Became the NFL's Standouts From the time Cris Carter started his career as a supplemental draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1987 to his retirement in 2002, the position of wide receiver exploded in the NFL. Receivers went from being quiet and classy to being known for their electric play, off-the-field antics, and -- in some cases -- over-the-top personalities. In Going Deep, Carter and ESPN journalist Jeffri Chadiha chronicle the rise of the wide receiver and explain how it became the most complex, compelling, and talked-about position in all of professional sports. Using stories from his own career to offer unprecedented insight into the position, Carter explains the players' unique personalities, how their minds work, and why teams need to understand exactly what they're dealing with when it comes to their wideouts -- the NFL's newest superstars. Told through Carter's opinionated voice, Going Deep covers all the important moments and people -- from Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, and Keyshawn Johnson to Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and Chad Johnson -- who have contributed to this revolution. He also tells stories readers have never heard about their favorite players, shares theories about the position that only get discussed in front offices and locker rooms, and offers revealing explanations on what these players mean to the league today, as well as why the NFL can't go forward without them. "One of the most riveting, insightful football books I've ever read. This book takes you inside the huddle, along the sidelines, and deep into the secret world that is the NFL. Breathtaking work." -- Jeff Pearlman, New York Times bestselling author of Boys Will Be Boys and The Bad Guys Won "No one understands wide receivers better than Cris Carter, and I loved his book. If you want to understand how we think, and hear inside stories about the most over-the-top athletes in sports, read Going Deep." -- Jerry Rice, Hall of Fame wide receiver "I am so glad someone got Cris Carter to sit down and describe what makes receivers tick. (It's deeper than you think.) You'll get to the last page of this book and say, 'I really learned a lot here--and the pages flew by.' " -- Peter King, senior writer, Sports Illustrated; author of Monday Morning Quarterback; and two-time National Sportswriter of the Year

Book Just Give Me the Damn Ball

Download or read book Just Give Me the Damn Ball written by Keyshawn Johnson and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09-26 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Well, son, I guess we have to go the to bank." That's what Leon Hess told me the day the Jets drafted me as the number-one player in the NFL draft. But that first day, the day of the draft, was one of the happiest days in my life, because I knew I was ready to make things happen in the league and help turn things around for the sorry-ass Jets. But what a nightmare! Week after week, loss after loss. The Jets went in with a loser reputation, and they were earning it all over again. We had no emotion, no energy, no hunger. The media tried to cover it all. Rich Kotite tried to explain the disasters away. But nobody outside the team knew the real truth of what really went on. This book is going to change all that.

Book Who s Better Who s Best in Football

Download or read book Who s Better Who s Best in Football written by Steve Silverman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the best quarterbacks in NFL history? How about running backs? Wide receivers? How can we objectively rate the performance of individual defensive players? And how can we make reasonable judgments about players at different positions and from different eras? Who is the greatest football player of all time? Jerry Rice? Lawrence Taylor? Jim Brown? Such are the questions pondered by pro football writer Steve Silverman late at night (and during the day). As statistician Elliott Kalb did with baseball, basketball, and golf, Silverman now takes the next step with Who’s Better, Who’s Best in Football?. Taking the analytical methods he developed over his years as a senior editor at Pro Football Weekly, he applies them to an evaluation of players going back to the earliest days of the NFL. The result is a fascinating ranking of the best of the gridiron, from legendary old-timers like Sammy Baugh to present-day superstars like Peyton Manning. Throughout, Silverman discusses the many considerations that must be made when comparing modern players with players of past eras and players at different positions. Including biographical essays on those top 75 players and detailed statistics for their playing careers, Who’s Better, Who’s Best in Football? is a must have for anyone who considers football to be more than just a game.

Book Distant Memories

Book excerpt: The 26 men featured in this book have one thing in common: They were all great football players. These legends were the superstars of the NFL and AFL during the glorious 60s and the fun-loving 70s. However, only 2 of these legends are in the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. These stars revolutionized the game of Pro Football with their brilliant performances and were Pro Footballs biggest gate attractions. As the years go by, and the 60s and 70s have become a distant memory, these outstanding football players and mavericks have been unappreciated and forgotten. These heroes and legends of the fall contributed to the success of the NFL and made Pro Football the most popular and exciting sport in America. Distant Memories- The NFLs Best Ever Players of the 60s and 70s focuses on Pro Footballs forgotten stars and legendary heroes from the glorious past. Its about pioneers and great players from yesteryear. I have always wanted to write a book like this. Since I was a former amateur football player and have the knowledge and resources about football, I thought I would be the right person to write this book and do it with class and style. I have watched every football player in this book play every week and have seen all of the weekly highlight shows. I have followed their entire careers and I have seen every touchdown they scored. I watched all NFL and AFL games on TV in the 60s and 70s. In 1970, when the AFL and NFL merged to become one league, I watched every game on TV during the 70s.I can remember my golden Sunday mornings and early afternoons when I played football during the 70s. I always hurried home from my games so I could watch the NFL on TV. You can ask my wonderful mother. She knew where I was every Sunday afternoon during the football season when I was young. I would like the players in this book to finally receive the recognition they deserve for their outstanding accomplishments. Danny Jones http://www.starsofthenfl.com/index.html

Book Calvin Johnson the Inspiring Story of One of Football s Greatest Wide Receivers

This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the Inspiring Story of the Detroit Lions' Legendary Star Calvin Johnson! Read on your PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet or Kindle device! In Calvin Johnson: The Inspiring Story of One of Football's Greatest Wide Receivers, you will learn the inspirational story of one of football's premier wide receivers, Calvin Johnson. Since joining the NFL as the 2nd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, Calvin Johnson has solidified his legacy as one of the most impressive wide receivers to ever play the game, holding the Lions' franchise records for most receiving touchdowns in a single season, most receiving touchdowns in an overall career, and most receiving yards in a career His retirement from professional football after nine seasons marks the end of nearly a decade of dominance by Johnson. While Calvin Johnson may now be retired from professional football, his legacy remains one of sheer brilliance. In this book, we'll explore Calvin's journey into the NFL, his greatest moments, and what makes him one of the greatest wide receiver to ever play the game. Here is a preview of what is inside this book: Childhood and Early Years High School Football College Football Calvin Johnson's NFL Career Johnson's Retirement from the NFL How Johnson Compares to All-Time Greatest Receivers Johnson's Charitable Work Personal Life Johnson's Overall Legacy An excerpt from the book: There are only so many athletes in professional sports who some experts might call "freaks of nature." The Detroit Lions have had two of them in their franchise history. The first was Barry Sanders, who ran from 1989 to 1998 and collected more than 15,000 rushing yards. He had retired near the prime of his career, not long after having a season with 2,053 yards and 11 touchdowns in the 1997 season. Back then, some people wondered why he would leave professional football while still showing signs of being one of the best running backs that were playing at the time. Many people felt it was because the franchise only went to the playoffs five times with just one win that sent the Lions to the NFC Championship. Detroit would have another chance of having another freak of nature athlete that would prove be arguably the best wide receiver the NFL has ever seen. It all started in 2007 when Calvin Johnson, Jr. would enter the league with a lot of attention coming out of Georgia Institute of Technology - better known as Georgia Tech - as a junior, and many thought he was the top prospect in the 2007 NFL Draft. It took some time, but Johnson would become a target for the Lions who many would describe as a total package that started with having the size that made him tower over the defending cornerbacks and safeties around the league - he was six-foot-five, weighed just under 240 pounds, and had colossal hands. But unlike most men his height and size, Johnson was faster than with a 40-yard dash time of under 4.4 seconds. It was no surprise that he was a genuinely special kind of athlete, which many of his coaches would say publically, including Jim Schwartz - a former head coach who had a chance to work with Johnson during his first playoff run in 2011. But it was also noticed by other coaches, like Chan Gailey, who commented that Johnson was a bigger and faster player than anyone else he had ever played with - whether it was in high school, college, or even in the NFL. "It was a total mismatch," Gailey said. Tags: calvin johnson bio, calvin johnson football, detroit lions football, matthew stafford, dez bryant, marshawn lynch, golden tate, larry fitzgerald

Book excerpt: This book is about Pro Football's best ever players and forgotten heroes from a bygone era. They were the superstars of the NFL and the AFL during the fabulous 50's, the glorious 60's, and the fun-loving 70's. However, none of these legends are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio with the exception of Bob Brown- who was finally selected in 2004 and Gene Hickerson- who was selected in 2007. These exciting players revolutionized the game of Pro Football with their outstanding performances and were the NFL's and AFL's biggest gate attractions. This book is a sequel to my first book, Distant Memories: The NFL's Best Ever Players of the 60's and 70's. I have chronicled the careers of 30 great football players and have provided you a glimpse back at the best seasons, longest touchdowns, and the big plays of their illustrious careers. Most of these men should be in the Hall of Fame. J.D. Hill and Golden Richards will never be selected because they don't have the statistics, but they were 2 of the NFL's most sensational players. All of these players had Hall of Fame talent and most of them also had Hall of Fame like statistics. More Distant Memories is more than a book about great football players. It's about the men who played the game and the humanity behind the facemasks. These legendary heros and mavericks provided excitement and happiness to millions of football fans across America. These players are lost treasures and have simply been forgotten as time goes by. They were brilliant players and dedicated professionals. Their place in Pro Football history is secure regardless of any Hall of Fame status. It was these trailblazers, legends, and other stars from the glorious past that made Pro Football our national pastime and America's game. Enjoy your trip down memory lane. http://www.starsofthenfl.com/index.html
