Download or read book You Can t Please All written by Tariq Ali and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new memoir from renowned political activist and author of Street Fighting Years: An Autobiography of the Sixties The revolutionary upsurge of 1968–1975 jump-hopped continents with ease but finally petered out. What happened after is the subject of You Can’t Please All. Tariq Ali recounts a life committed to writing and cultural interventions. An eyewitness in Moscow to the fall of the Soviet Union, he was caught up in the intellectual excitement that had gripped the country. In Porto Alegre, Hugo Chávez invited him to visit Caracas, and the two men developed a striking friendship. Post-2001, as a founding member of the Stop the War Coalition, he became a fierce critic of the War on Terror, visiting many US cities with surprising regularity to engage in debate and discussion, inaugurating a new phase of political activism. Evident in his work is the integral part politics plays in his life. He is one of the most sought-after socialist and anti-imperialist public intellectuals on most continents. Underlying the narrative is a chain of anecdotes, reflections, jottings and storytelling. The book explores his work for the theatre and film, as well as his fiction, including the acclaimed Islam Quintet. There are pen portraits of friends and comrades such as Edward Said, Derek Jarman, Richard Ingrams, Benazir Bhutto, Mary-Kay Wilmers, and the intellectuals who founded and relaunched New Left Review: E. P. Thompson, Perry Anderson and Robin Blackburn. The book also contains a moving family portrait, describing how his parents met and lived during the early years of Pakistan.

Download or read book Cultures of Neurasthenia from Beard to the First World War written by Marijke Gijswijt-Hofstra and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2001 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurasthenia, or "nerve weakness," was originally identified in the U.S. in the late-19th century as an urban disease, similar to today's chronic fatigue syndrome. Neurasthenia maintained popularity through the first decade of the 20th century. This text contains 16 papers from a conference held in June 2000 in Amsterdam, to analyze and compare the history of neurasthenia in Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands. Developments in America and France are also given attention, as well as nervous disorders in Britain prior to the coming of neurasthenia. The authors consider the rise and fall of neurasthenia, variations in its popularity among countries, and the professional, patient, and public views of the disorder. Download or read book History and Politics written by Richard Wakelin and published by . This book was released on 1877 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a true facsimilie of the original edition of 1877 ... Richard Wakelin (1816-1881) began his New Zealand career working with the Wellington Independent, a leading newspaper of the time and as biased as any of them. He ended it running his Wairarapa Standard, a few years afte he had with "History and politics" thrown all his skills into the cause of Sir George Grey. It was not surprising that the sometime promoter of a Chartist paper, the staunch radical and opponent of land monopoly should have backed Grey when the ex-Governor emerged from retirement to cap his distinguished career as a liberal politician. This little book ... is more than a propoganda tract in support of the 1877-79 Grey government. the 1850s were the most turbulent and exciting decade in Wellington politics. Yet Wakelin's work apart, there is little publishe on the personalities and feuds of those years. He gives intimate glimpses, of the local colonel brandishing his whip at the Provincial Secretary, the Featherston party removing all the province's funds from the bank befor handing over to their rivals, the ten mile walk in which Dr Featherston discussed with Wakelin and changed his intention of retiring from politics. The settlement of the Wairarapa is described, the land problem referred to again and again, and the work concludes with Wakelin's view on the issues which so agitated men in the 1870s."--Inside front cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three women. A cursed house. Generations of lives at stake. The third novel in the acclaimed Bliss House series reveals the secret that started it all. There is no bliss to be found in Bliss House. In Old Gate, Virginia, stands a grand house built by Randolph Bliss, a charming New York carpetbagger who, in 1878, shook off dire warnings to build his home elsewhere. For the ground beneath Bliss House is tainted with the kind of tragedy that curses generations, seeping through the foundation and sowing madness in its wake. His first and second wives, and his young Japanese mistress, Kiku, bear witness to Randolph’s growing insanity with stories of his cruel manipulations and their desperate struggles to find happiness for themselves and their children. Their desire to live and love and even take revenge also fills the house, triumphing even over death. Spanning half a century, The Abandoned Heart is the prequel to Charlotte’s Story and Bliss House, forming a trilogy of southern Gothic novels in which one haunted house begets haunted lives that echo over centuries. A haunting so powerful that even Bliss House’s destruction cannot kill it.
