In this anthology the poets tackle the covid pandemic, some with fear, some with pain, some with anger, some with forebodings of danger; you sense the feeling of insecurity in all of the entries around this issue. This is understandable. As a humanity we have had to go, and we are still going, through one of the most terrible times in our existence, as millions get swept away in this tidal danger. But we will vanquish this monster, we will come out stronger, in the meanwhile as we fight this monster we continue celebrating our humanity in love poems, in spiritual poetry, in politics and governance, in developmental agendas, in foods, in day to day connections, which will outstay this menace. Book Year Of The Rat

Download or read book Year Of The Rat written by Jorah Kai and published by More Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE YEAR OF THE METAL RAT, 2020, was a time of panic, uncertainty, and great division. CHINA, VIETNAM, CANADA, SAUDI ARABIA, ITALY, ARGENTINA, AMERICA, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, PHILIPPINES, NETHERLANDS, GUATEMALA, UGANDA, THE U.K., SINGAPORE, RUSSIA… As the pandemic spread, some wore masks and socially distanced to protect the vulnerable, while others protested all public health measures as a form of tyranny and caused loud and obnoxious mass disruptions to critical infrastructure in a jarring display of 'personal freedom.' Fake news and echo chambers enabled 'alternative facts,' while unhinged narratives and cartoonish conspiracies ran rampant, often trumping coverage of legitimate and existential converging catastrophes. In YEAR OF THE RAT, the sequel to the international best-seller 'The Invisible War' (Kai's Diary), Jorah Kai documents the world’s largest ‘Zero Covid bubble’ while the outside world handles the pandemic uniquely. Reaching out to friends across the globe, he weaves their stories together. Thirty-six writers from 33 cities in 16 countries share their daily struggles, hopes, and fears for the YEAR OF THE RAT as the SARSCOV2 virus spreads catastrophe to every corner of the globe. "It’s ... the metaphor of the yin and the yang. I’d say right now; we are in the yin. It’s a kind of disaster. It’s sad. And on the yang side... it looks like some sort of a mathematical balance that I cannot explain." - JCVD “I would have done the whole thing for a donut and a tuna fish sandwich. The money meant nothing. It was the opportunity to at least prove to myself that I wasn’t a liar, that I wasn’t living a life of disillusionment. When you think of yourself as being a very creative person, and turn around and realize you’ve been leading a lie.” - Sylvester Stallone (Rocky). "At the beginning of the pandemic, Jorah Kai led a plucky band of frontline workers and activists to fight the pandemic with science. Some called him a harbinger, others a ‘pandemic guru’ as they navigated an increasingly bizarre world of book deals, TV appearances, speaking engagements, and a recovery event with his childhood hero, martial arts movie star Jeanne Claude Van Damme. But nothing could prepare him for what came next..." - The Narrator

Book Why We Disagree about Inequality

Download or read book Why We Disagree about Inequality written by John Iceland and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-04-12 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we disagree about the causes of and solutions to social inequality? What explains our different viewpoints on Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, income inequality, and immigration? In this tightly argued book, John Iceland, Eric Silver, and Ilana Redstone show how two clashing worldviews – one emphasizing Social Justice and another Social Order – are preventing Americans from solving their most pressing social problems. The authors show how each worldview provides a different understanding of human nature, morality, social change, and the wisdom of the past. They argue that, before Americans can find lasting solutions to today’s seemingly intractable societal challenges, they will need to recognize that each side possesses a wisdom the other lacks. Only then can we achieve the common ground and consensus we seek.

  • ISBN : 1973669110
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Senior Outreach written by Dr. Dewey E. Painter Sr. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior citizens continue to be a forgotten frontier in evangelism and local church outreach today. When I first wrote this guide in 1982, it was the product of starting seventeen senior citizens’ outreach programs in local churches in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. The vision to see more churches see the value of reaching their senior citizens and providing a faith-based fellowship for them was our inspiration then and remains now that local churches see a vision for these special people. Sad to say, this is not the case. Having a senior citizens program in the local church can be one of the least expensive and most meaningful outreach of the local church or community association. It requires space, little funding, a dedicated leader, and volunteers, and it can be one of the least costly programs that can be put on by the local church. It is easy to do and easy to manage. The need for a direct and specific program orientated toward seniors in the local church has never been greater than it is today. People are living longer. This is every growing field that truly is white unto harvest. With the changes in our society, increased life expectancy, increase in birth control, and now the wholesale slaughter of unwanted children (called abortion and sometimes birth killing), we are seeing the senior citizen population increasing.

Book Hidden History of Transportation in Los Angeles

Download or read book Hidden History of Transportation in Los Angeles written by Charles P. Hobbs and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Angeles transportation's epic scale--its iconic freeways, Union Station, Los Angeles International Airport and the giant ports of its shores--has obscured many offbeat transit stories of moxie and eccentricity. Triumphs such as the Vincent Thomas Bridge and Mac Barnes's Ground Link buspool have existed alongside such flops as the Santa Monica Freeway Diamond Lane and the Oxnard-Los Angeles Caltrain commuter rail. The City of Angels lacks a propeller-driven monorail and a freeway in the paved bed of the Los Angeles River, but not for a lack of public promoters. Horace Dobbins built the elevated California Cycleway in Pasadena, and Mike Kadletz deployed the Pink Buses for Orange County kids hitchhiking to the beach. Join Charles P. Hobbs as he recalls these and other lost episodes of LA-area transportation lore.

Book These Precious Days

Download or read book These Precious Days written by Ann Patchett and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

Book The Leadership Bus

Download or read book The Leadership Bus written by Ted Corcoran and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-07-21 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, leadership skills are vital in every field and, consequently, are in much demand. Successful leaders must have a clear vision of what they want to achieve. They must also be able to persuade everyone on their team to join with them in achieving their goals. From there on, it is necessary to continue working very hard to keep the team united and totally task focused until the goals are achieved. An excellent analogy is to liken the leader to a bus driver who knows the desired destination. The two vital tasks, then, are to persuade everyone, whose assistance is needed to get there, to board the bus, and, having done so, ensure they all stay on board, until the destination is reached. This book explains what leadership is, which leadership style is your predominant one, what you need to do to get your people on your bus and, finally, how to keep them there until your goals are achieved. In summary, you will learn how to be a truly effective and successful leader.
