Book Spacecraft

Download or read book Spacecraft written by Michael H. Gorn and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spacecraft takes a long look at humankind's attempts and advances in leaving Earth through incredible illustrations and authoritatively written profiles on Sputnik, the International Space Station, and beyond. In 1957, the world looked on with both uncertainty and amazement as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first man-made orbiter. Sputnik 1 would spend three months circling Earth every 98 minutes and covering 71 million miles in the process. The world’s space programs have traveled far (literally and figuratively) since then, and the spacecraft they have developed and deployed represent almost unthinkable advances for such a relatively short period. This ambitiously illustrated aerospace history profiles and depicts spacecraft fromSputnik 1 through the International Space Station, andeverything in between, including concepts that have yet to actually venture outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Illustrator and aerospace professional Giuseppe De Chiara teams up with aerospace historian Michael Gorn to present a huge, profusely illustrated, and authoritatively written collection of profiles depicting and describing the design, development, and deployment of these manned and unmanned spacecraft. Satellites, capsules, spaceplanes, rockets, and space stations are illustrated in multiple-view, sometimes cross-section, and in many cases shown in archival period photography to provide further historical context. Dividing the book by era, De Chiara and Gorn feature spacecraft not only from the United States and Soviet Union/Russia, but also from the European Space Agency and China. The marvels examined in this volume include the rockets Energia, Falcon 9, and VEGA; the Hubble Space Telescope; the Cassini space probe; and the Mars rovers, Opportunity and Curiosity. Authoritatively written and profusely illustrated with more than 200 stunning artworks, Spacecraft: 100 Iconic Rockets, Shuttles, and Satellites That Put Us in Space is sure to become a definitive guide to the history of manned space exploration.

Book Great Spaceship Designs

Download or read book Great Spaceship Designs written by Sophie Washburne and published by . This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launching a spaceship, monitoring it in orbit, and bringing it back down to Earth--and doing it all while keeping the crew safe--is a huge undertaking. Engineers and physicists have to carefully design each component. For example, a space shuttle has a blunt nose because this helps keep the worst of the heat of atmospheric reentry away from the body of the shuttle. This volume examines the science behind the design choices of rockets, shuttles, space stations, and other spaceships. Informative sidebars and full-color photographs augment the engaging text to help readers understand why each design element is crucial.

  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book Types of Spaceships written by Martin K Ettington and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE ARE A LOT MORE SPACESHIPS WHICH HAVE BEEN BUILT AND WILL BE BUILT THAN YOU MIGHT THINKThis book is the seventh volume of "The Living in Space Series". Each volume focuses on one particular technology of living in space. In this book the focus is on spaceships used to access and travel in space. In my research I was pretty amazed at how many spaceships have been designed, the large number available in the current era, and that many more are already on the drawing boards. Some spaceships like the Space Shuttle seemed like a great idea back in the 1970s and 1980s. But due to the compromises in design were very expensive for each flight and kind of dangerous too. Even though the Space Shuttle was flown for over 30 years it was eventually cancelled because of cost issues. The newer transportation systems focus on lowering costs through reusability. This will lead to a much better long term paradigm for expanding people's entry into space because of the lower costs reusability provides.I also need to determine what types of ships to include in this book. What is a valid spaceship? My decision was to use the Von Karmen Line which says that a spaceship flown higher than 50 miles (80 km) has entered space.Using the Von Karmen Line includes one manned device-the X-15 experimental rocket plane as a spaceship although most people wouldn't think so.Lastly, I've included some notional spaceship designs which might be used to travel to Mars or other bodies in the Solar System. Get this book to keep up to date with how man has, now does, and plans for spaceships to travel in space
