Finally it examines the current climate, making links with Every Child Matters, and considers today's public perceptions of childhood.

Book excerpt: Most published books on agroforestry have focused on biophysical aspects. There has been a lack of scientifically rigorous information about the socioeconomic features of agroforestry, and the adoption of agroforestry practices by farmers. This book fills that gap by assessing the adoption of selected agroforestry practices developed with African farmers, describing methods, and drawing out the implications for research, development, and policy. The volume includes five case studies of research conducted in Kenya and Zambia to evaluate the adoption potential of agroforestry. The cases illustrate methods of farm and village technology design, testing, and analysis that are applicable to a wide range of natural resource management practices.Along with the case studies, the contents also include chapters on: methods for assessing agroforestry adoption potential, promoting new agroforestry technologies: policy lessons from on-farm research, and assessing adoption potential: lessons learned and future directions.

Download or read book Biodiversity Access and Benefit Sharing written by Daniel F. Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nagoya Protocol to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is rapidly receiving signatures and ratifications. Many countries are preparing to implement the protocol through national research permit systems and/or biodiversity laws. Yet there is still considerable confusion about how to implement the Protocol, regarding access and benefit-sharing (ABS) procedures, and minimal experience in many countries. This book seeks to remedy this gap in understanding by analysing a number of ABS case studies in light of the Nagoya Protocol. The case studies are wide-ranging, with examples of plants for medicinal, cosmetic, biotech and food products from or for development in Australia, North Africa, Madagascar, Switzerland, Thailand, USA and Oceania. These will encourage countries to develop national systems which maximise their benefits (both monetary and non-monetary) towards conservation and support for local communities that hold traditional knowledge. In addition, the author analyses new expectations raised by the Nagoya Protocol, such as the encouragement of the development of community protocols by indigenous and local communities. As a result, stakeholders and policy-makers will be able to learn the steps involved in establishing ABS agreements, issues that arise between stakeholders, and the types of benefits that might be realistic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regenerating Forests and Livelihoods in Nepal: A New Lease on Life documents the success story of an innovative rural development programme in the Himalayan foothills, Nepal. The project has made a real difference by transforming increasingly degraded land, where farmers carved out a meagre existence, into a fertile and prosperous zone where they could thrive. Project activities included bringing in effective cultivation techniques to protect the environment and introducing new local crops and goats, as well as promoting entrepreneurial spirit. Every intervention was carefully selected and conducted to mitigate climate change as well as to help farmers become more resilient to its effects. The ingredients of the project's success, from both the technical and human perspectives, are presented in this book, demonstrating people's commitment in a country prone to natural disasters and earthquakes.
