Book The Belmont Belmonte Family

Download or read book The Belmont Belmonte Family written by Richard J. H. Gottheil and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Belmont-Belmonte Family: A Record of Four Hundred Years; Put Together From the Original Documents in the Archives and Libraries of Spain, Portugal, Holland, England and Germany, as Well as From Private Sources It is also within the range of possibility that even more definite traditions existed in a few families, though all such traditions have to be regarded with a certain amount of reasonable suspicion. The ques tion from which of the twelve tribes a Jewish family may be descended is one that has often interested students of genealogy and colleges of heraldry. The difficulty is narrowed down to a smaller choice than one would at first suppose. The capture of the ten tribes comprising the Northern Kingdom by King Shalmaneser of Assyria was a very definite loss. These tribes were completely disrupted; their national and tribal feelings were broken forever by the captivity of a large number of their most influential members, and the forced racial mixing which was a constant part of Assyrian welt-politik. They were broken forever and lost as a conscious group, despite all the efforts of well-intentioned though misled philanthropists to find their traces among the English, the Irish or even among the American Red Indians. It follows that. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From family trees written in early American bibles to birther conspiracy theories, genealogy has always mattered in the United States, whether for taking stock of kin when organizing a family reunion or drawing on membership—by blood or other means—to claim rights to land, inheritances, and more. And since the advent of DNA kits that purportedly trace genealogical relations through genetics, millions of people have used them to learn about their medical histories, biological parentage, and ethnic background. A Nation of Descendants traces Americans' fascination with tracking family lineage through three centuries. Francesca Morgan examines how specific groups throughout history grappled with finding and recording their forebears, focusing on Anglo-American white, Mormon, African American, Jewish, and Native American people. Morgan also describes how individuals and researchers use genealogy for personal and scholarly purposes, and she explores how local businesspeople, companies like Ancestry.com, and Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s Finding Your Roots series powered the commercialization and commodification of genealogy.

Download or read book Diasporas within a Diaspora written by Jonathan Israel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the religious, social and commercial 'networking' methods extending over a large part of the world, ranging from the Near East to South America, used by the western Sephardic Jewish diaspora - and the linked 'New Christian' diaspora (in lands where the Inquisition prevailed)- from the mid sixteenth to the mid eighteenth century. Particular attention is given to the role of these unique diasporas in the functioning of the six great European world maritime empires of the time - the Venetian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English and French. New material and argument is offered relating to the questions of diaspora formation, Sephardic social practices, crypto-Judaism, religious syncretism, cross-cultural brokerage, and the contribution of diasporas to European expansion.
