This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1923, Vol. 1 Modern industry is characterized by the extent to which scientific research and technique based on precise study have contributed to its progress. So complete has been the adaptation of and reliance on scientific research in many industries that it is difficult at this time to visualize the state of affairs of two or three decades ago, when substantially all industry on its technical side was dependent for advancement on cut-and-try, rule-of-thumb, methods of development. Today in many industries the management would not think of embarking on a new project without consulting their research engineers. Many industries have proved the benefits to be derived from the utilization of that organized knowledge provided both in the fields of the physical sciences and in those newer fields which have to do with psychology and economics. There are still greater numbers of industrial organizations where the adoption of scientific methods has been slow. However, the time will undoubtedly come when every industry will recognize the aid it can derive from scientific research in some form as it now recognizes its dependence for motive power on steam or electricity rather than on muscular activity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1941, Vol. 20 Whether sampling may be employed to advantage in place of 100% inspection usually depends, of course, on the purpose for which inspection is made. The sampling tables here presented provide definite procedures for conducting inspections that have certain immediate purposes which are described in some detail. Through their provision for instituting a screening inspection whenever quality falls below an acceptable level, the procedures have been found in practice to enforce a program of controlling quality in process as the alternative to high inspection costs. Download or read book The Bell System Technical Journal 1930 Vol 9 written by Bancroft Gherardi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1930, Vol. 9: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication As has been stated by Mr. Gifford, President of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, The ideal and aim today of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and its Associated Companies is a telephone service for the nation, free, so far as humanly possible, from imperfections, errors, or delays, and enabling at all times any one anywhere to pick up a telephone and talk to any one else anywhere else, clearly, quickly and at a reasonable cost. With this aim in view, continuous effort is made further to improve and to extend the service within the nation and also the telephonic con nections to other nations. It is recognized also that changes in business and social conditions bring about repeated changes in the services desired by the people of the nation and in the character and appearance of facilities furnished to them. These facts, in addition to the onward march of the application of science, form an important basis for the continued study by the general staff of the development of all phases of the telephone system. A few figures relative to the size and growth of the Bell System are helpful in an understanding of the more specific telephone prob lems which are discussed below. Such figures are included in the statistical summary appended to this paper and include data regarding telephone messages, numbers of telephones, miles of wire and amount Of telephone plant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1945, Vol. 24: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication T has been known for a long time that all kinds of oscillators are subject to the trouble variously referred to as intermittent oscillation, motor boating, or squegging. In conventional circuits such as the Hartley the phenomenon is most likely to be observed if the grid leak and grid condenser are abnormally large. It is found that the time constant of this combina tion must be reduced as the frequency is raised and as the Q of the resonant circuit is decreased. At frequencies above a few hundred megacycles the problem of producing a practical circuit with suitable margin of stability is quite difficult. With the advent of the oscillator having automatic output control the problem assumed a new aspect}, 2 By application of an amplified control circuit a high degree of constancy of output together with low harmonic output is obtained. Satisfactory Operation is secured, however, only when suitable attention is given to\the characteristics of the control circuit. The intentional generation of pulses by means of intermittent oscillations of relatively high frequency has been studied to some extent, and circuits of this kind are employed in some television systems. Usually the high frequency oscillation is limited to a small portion of the low-frequency cycle, the charge stored during this period being allowed to dissipate itself relatively slowly during the remainder of the cycle.
