Download or read book Material Properties of Steel in Fire Conditions written by Weiyong Wang and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-11-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material Properties of Steel Fire Conditions is a major new contribution on how to understand the material properties of steel in fires. The application of new types of steel and development of sophisticated codes of practice has grown dramatically in recent years, making this a timely resource on the topic. Under fire conditions, knowing the material properties of steel is essential in the fire resistance design of steel structures, such as in Eurocode3. This book shows that the reduction factors of mechanical properties of different steels are quite different. In recent years, the authors of this book have carried out significant testing on the material properties of several types of steels, such as Q460 steel, Q690 steel and A992 steel, etc. Users will find this new test data on the material properties of steel with temperature useful in evaluating the fire resistance of steel structures in their own projects. - Deals with the material properties of steels in fire conditions, including thermal properties and mechanical properties, such as thermal conductivity, strength, elastic modulus and creep behavior - Provides basic knowledge to perform fire resistance design of steel structures - Presents information useful to designers, researches and students who must conduct fire resistance design or perform structural analyses on high strength steel structures

Book Reliability of Steel Columns Protected by Intumescent Coatings Subjected to Natural Fires

Download or read book Reliability of Steel Columns Protected by Intumescent Coatings Subjected to Natural Fires written by Chao Zhang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis studied the effect of aging of intumescent coatings (ICs) on the reliability of protected steel columns in fire condition and developed a probabilistic approach to assess the service life of ICs applied on steel columns. In the study, Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to obtain the reliability index or failure probability of steel columns protected by ICs subjected to compartment fires. The effect of aging of intumescent coatings on the failure probability of protected steel columns was investigated by using variable insulation property of intumescent coatings in the simulation. The test data on aging effect on insulation property of intumescent coatings from literature was used. Based on the reliability analysis, a probabilistic approach is given to determine the service life of intumescent coatings for steel columns. In that approach, the failure probability of the protected steel columns is compared with the target probability of the structural fire design. The approach can also be used for probabilistic analysis of steel columns protected by conventional inert fire protection materials.

Book Performance of Steel Columns Exposed to Fire

Download or read book Performance of Steel Columns Exposed to Fire written by Vute Chandrasekaran and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel columns are used in many high rise as well as industrial constructions. These columns act as the main load carrying member. In this paper results of analytical studies carried out to evaluate the performance mechanisms of steel columns exposed to fire have been presented. The finite element method is used to analyse the buckling behaviour of geometrically perfect steel columns at elevated temperatures. The column behaviour up to collapse was investigated considering geometric as well as material non-linearities. The analysis includes non-linear material characteristics as a function of temperature. The importance of proper idealisation of stress strain temperature behaviour has been brought out. The buckling characteristics of columns have been analysed for continuous stress-strain-temperature material behaviour as well as elasto-plastic bilinear idealisations. The influence of slenderness ratios was found to control the buckling behaviour of columns at elevated temperatures. Solutions have been provided to evaluate critical stresses of columns with different end fixity conditions. The factors which control the performance of columns exposed to fire have been discussed Comparisons have been made with other analytical approaches and available experimental data. It is believed that the fire safety engineer will be benefited from these studies.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled BEHAVIOUR OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL COLUMNS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES Submitted by Ju Chen for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in April 2007 In this study, the structural behaviour of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures is investigated. The current fire resistant design rules for steel columns in most of the specifications are generally based on the investigation of hot-rolled steel having normal strength. Although similarities between the conventional normal strength and high strength steel exist, there is sufficient diversity in their mechanical properties for different treatments in design. Therefore, there is a need to develop the design rules of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures. Material properties play an important role in the performance of steel structural members. Hence, an extensive material test program was first performed on high strength steel at elevated temperatures. The high strength steel includes cold-formed steel, stainless steel as well as quenched and tempered carbon steel. Structural carbon steel having normal strength was also tested for comparison. The mechanical properties and stress-strain curves of the tested steel were obtained and compared with predictions from the American, Australian, British and European specifications. In addition, equations predicting the mechanical properties and stress-strain curve model for the tested materials at elevated temperatures were proposed. The column behaviour of cold-formed steel built-up closed sections with intermediate web stiffeners at normal room temperature was investigated. The test results were compared with the design strengths obtained using the direct strength method. An accurate and reliable finite element model of cold-formed steel built-up columns was developed and verified against the test results. A parametric study was carried out using the verified finite element model. Design rules for cold-formed steel built-up closed section columns at normal room and elevated temperatures modified from the direct strength method were proposed. The behaviour of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures has been investigated using finite element method. The suitability of the effective width method and direct strength method for cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures was evaluated. The behaviour of quenched and tempered high strength carbon steel columns at elevated temperatures was also investigated. The finite element analysis results were compared with the design strengths using the American, Australian and European specifications. Generally, it is shown that the effective width method and direct strength method using the reduced material properties conservatively predicted the column strengths. Book Creep Buckling Behavior of Steel Columns Subjected to Fire

Download or read book Creep Buckling Behavior of Steel Columns Subjected to Fire written by Mohammed Ali Morovat and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 990 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essence of performance-based structural fire safety design of steel building structures is the ability to predict thermal and structural response to fire. An important aspect of such predictions is the ability to evaluate strength of columns at elevated temperatures. Columns are critical structural elements, and failure of columns can lead to collapse of a structure. The ability of steel columns to carry their design loads is greatly affected by timeand temperature-dependent mechanical properties of steel at high temperatures due to fire. It is well known that structural steel loses strength and stiffness with temperature, especially at temperatures above 400 °C. Further, the reductions in strength and stiffness of steel are also dependent on the duration of exposure to elevated temperatures. The time-dependent response or creep of steel plays a particularly important role in predicting the collapse load of steel columns subjected to fire temperatures. Specifically, creep of steel leads to the creep buckling phenomenon, where the critical buckling load for a steel column depends not only on slenderness and temperature, but also on duration of exposure to fire temperatures. The main focus of the research summarized in this dissertation is on a testing program to investigate the effects of time-dependent material behavior or creep on buckling of steel columns subjected to fire. Material characterization tests were conducted at temperatures up to 1000 °C to evaluate tensile and creep properties of ASTM A992 steel at elevated temperatures. In addition, buckling tests on W4×13 wide flange columns under pin-end conditions were conducted to characterize short-time and vii creep buckling phenomena at elevated temperatures. The column test results are further used to verify analytical and computational tools developed to model the time-dependent buckling of steel columns at elevated temperatures. Test results are also compared against code-based predictions such as those from Eurocode 3 and the AISC Specification. Results of the research study presented in this dissertation clearly indicate that thermal creep of steel has a very large effect on strength of steel columns at high temperatures due to fire. The effect of creep on column capacity at high temperatures can be predicted using analytical and computational approaches presented in this dissertation.
