Book The Mechanical Behavior of Heavily Overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay

Download or read book The Mechanical Behavior of Heavily Overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay written by Albalyra Geraldine Vargas Bustamante and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotechnical engineers encounter some of the most challenging problems in heavily overconsolidated soils. Clays under this condition originated in nature or man-made construction. This thesis investigates the mechanical behavior heavily overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay (RBBC), as an analog test material. The uniformity, reproducibility, and extensive knowledgebase on this clay permit the investigation of only the effect of overconsolidation. A series of undrained triaxial compression shear tests have been performed on specimens that were Ko-consolidated and swelled to overconsolidation ratios (OCR) ranging from 5 to 62 on RBBC, as well as on Intact Presumpscot Maine Clay. Specimens were consolidated to maximum stress levels between 1.1 and 5.4 MPa. The undrained shear behavior revealed an important relationship with overconsolidation ratio. The triaxial compression test results exhibit a significant increase in the undrained strength ratio (su/[sigma]'vc) when normalized to the minimum consolidation stress. It also shows an important increase in the stiffness, increase in the strain ([epsilon]f) to mobilize the peak resistance and a significant increase of friction angle ([phi]') with overconsolidation. The applicability of the SHANSEP equation and impact on its equation parameters are also discussed in detail. A comprehensive comparison of the new results with prior normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated data is presented, showing the distinct behavior of heavily overconsolidated specimens. The failure envelope displays a non-linear behavior and the undrained shear strength (su) is reduced up to about 80% from a normally consolidated clay to a heavily overconsolidated clay with an OCR = 50. These observations demonstrate the importance of selecting appropriate design values in the presence of overconsolidated soils.

Book Foundations of Elastoplasticity Subloading Surface Model

Download or read book Foundations of Elastoplasticity Subloading Surface Model written by Koichi Hashiguchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the standard text book for elastoplasticity/viscoplasticity which is explained comprehensively covering the rate-independent to -dependent finite deformations of metals, soils, polymers, crystal plasticity, etc. and the friction phenomenon. Concise explanations on vector-tensor analysis and continuum mechanics are provided first, covering the underlying physical concepts, e.g. various time-derivatives, pull-back and push-forward operations, work-conjugacy and multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient tensor. Then, the rigorous elastoplastic/viscoplastic model, called the subloading surface model, is explained comprehensively, which is based on the subloading surface concept to describe the continuous development of the plastic/viscoplastic strain rate as the stress approaches to the yield surface, while it can never be described by the other plasticity models, e.g. the Chaboche-Ohno and the Dafalias-Yoshida models assuming the purely-elastic domain. The main features of the subloading surface model are as follows: 1) The subloading surface concept underling the cyclic plasticity is introduced, which insists that the plastic deformation develops as the stress approaches the yield surface. Thus, the smooth elastic-plastic transition leading to the continuous variation of the tangent stiffness modulus is described always. 2) The subloading-overstress model is formulated by which the elastoplastic deformation during the quasi-static loading and the viscoplastic deformation during the dynamic and impact loading can be described by the unified equation. Then, only this model can be used to describe the deformation in the general rate of deformation, disusing the elastoplastic constitutive equation. 3) The hyperelastic-based (visco)plasticity based on the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient tensor and the subloading surface model is formulated for the exact descriptions of the finite elastic and (visco)plastic deformations. 4) The subloading-friction model is formulated for the exact description of the dry and the fluid (lubricated) frictions at the general rate of sliding from the static to the impact sliding. Thus, all the elastic and inelastic deformation/sliding phenomena of solids can be described accurately in the unified equation by the subloading-overstress model. The subloading surface model will be engraved as the governing law of irreversible deformation of solids in the history of solid mechanics.

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Evaluation of the field lateral stress of overconsolidated clays laboratory tests in a soil from the guabirotuba formation

Download or read book Evaluation of the field lateral stress of overconsolidated clays laboratory tests in a soil from the guabirotuba formation written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the available laboratory methods for the evaluation of the in situ horizontal stresses are usually applicable only to normally consolidated or slightly overconsolidatedsoils. The assessment of the in situ effective stresses state of rigid, overconsolidated soils, and consequently of their stress-strain performance, involves a considerable degree of uncertainty due to the difficulty in the determination of the field lateral stresses . This thesis presents the results of an experimental study performed in the laboratory to gather information on compressibility and undrained stress-strain characteristics, and to determine the in situ effective lateral stress of a soil from the Guabirotuba Formation, at the Curitiba Sedimentary Basin, in the South of Brasil. The first stage of the study comprised characterization tests, mineralogical analysis and electronic microscopy evaluations. After the physical characterization of the material, it was carried out the study on the stress-strain-strength behaviour through undrained triaxial tests and oedometric tests with constant rate of deformation. Unweathred and latherized soil samples from the Guabirotuba formation were used in such investigations. As the methodologies presented in the literature are not appropriate for rigid, overconsolidated soils, a new experimental technique for the determination of the in situ lateral stress was proposed. The proposed method is based on the concept of yield surfaces. The stress history of a soil is related to its stress-strain behaviour and, therefore, can be inferred through monitoringchanges of the soil rigidity under a given stress path. Following the proposed methodology, stress-path controlled triaxial tests with internal measurement of axial strains were performed in undisturbed samples of the Guabirotuba Formation, providing an assessment of the field lateralstress of the material.

Book Fundamentals of Foundation Engineering

Download or read book Fundamentals of Foundation Engineering written by Chang-Yu Ou and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-09-18 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to introduce the principle and design of various foundations, covering shallow foundations, mat foundations, earth retaining structures, excavations, pile foundations, and slope stability. Since the analysis and design of a foundation are based on the soil properties under short-term (undrained) or long-term (drained) conditions, the assessment of soil properties from the geotechnical site investigation and the concept of drained or undrained soil properties are discussed in the first two chapters. Foundation elements transfer various load combinations from the superstructure to the underlying soils or rocks. The load transfer mechanisms, vertical stress or earth pressure distributions, and failure modes of each foundation type are clearly explained in this book. After understanding the soil responses subjected to the loadings from the foundation, the design methods, required factors of safety, and improvement measures for each foundation type are elaborated. This book presents both theoretical explication and practical applications for readers to easily comprehend the theoretical background, design methods, and practical applications and considerations. Each chapter provides relevant exercise examples and a problem set for self-practice. The analysis methods introduced in the book can be applied in actual analysis and design as they contain the most up-to-date knowledge of foundation design. This book is suitable for teachers and students to use in foundation engineering courses and engineers who are engaged in foundation design to create a technically sound, construction-feasible, and economical design of the foundation system.
