Book Giant Molecules

Download or read book Giant Molecules written by A. I?U. Grosberg and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?? Giant molecules are important in our everyday life. But, as pointed out by the authors, they are also associated with a culture. What Bach did with the harpsichord, Kuhn and Flory did with polymers. We owe a lot of thanks to those who now make this music accessible ??Pierre-Gilles de GennesNobel Prize laureate in Physics(Foreword for the 1st Edition, March 1996)This book describes the basic facts, concepts and ideas of polymer physics in simple, yet scientifically accurate, terms. In both scientific and historic contexts, the book shows how the subject of polymers is fascinating, as it is behind most of the wonders of living cell machinery as well as most of the newly developed materials. No mathematics is used in the book beyond modest high school algebra and a bit of freshman calculus, yet very sophisticated concepts are introduced and explained, ranging from scaling and reptations to protein folding and evolution. The new edition includes an extended section on polymer preparation methods, discusses knots formed by molecular filaments, and presents new and updated materials on such contemporary topics as single molecule experiments with DNA or polymer properties of proteins and their roles in biological evolution.

Book Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules

Download or read book Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules written by S. F. Sun and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-01-28 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating coverage of polymers and biological macromolecules into a single text, Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules is carefully structured to provide a clear and consistent resource for beginners and professionals alike. The basic knowledge of both biophysical and physical polymer chemistry is covered, along with important terms, basic structural properties and relationships. This book includes end of chapter problems and references, and also: Enables users to improve basic knowledge of biophysical chemistry and physical polymer chemistry. Explores fully the principles of macromolecular chemistry, methods for determining molecular weight and configuration of molecules, the structure of macromolecules, and their separations.

Book The Hydrophobic Effect

Download or read book The Hydrophobic Effect written by Charles Tanford and published by . This book was released on 1980-01-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This almost entirely rewritten edition remains the only comprehensive, up-to-date account of the subject available today—with nearly half of all literature references made to work done since 1973. Theoretical treatment of micelle formation has been greatly improved, making it possible to predict (from first principles) the size and size distribution of micelles formed by many simple amphiphiles . . . as well as the critical concentration at which they first form. Defines four distinct modes of association between protein and detergents (or other amphiphiles), and gives a plausible explanation to show why some ionic detergents generally denature proteins while nonionic detergents often do not. Also includes entirely new chapters on serum lipoproteins and on membrane proteins.

Book Biophysics

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. Sybesma
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400922396
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Biophysics written by C. Sybesma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, courses on biophysics are taught in almost all universities in the world, often in separate biophysics departments or divisions. This reflects the enormous growth of the field, even though the problem of its formal definition remains unsettled. In spite of this lack of definition, biophysics, which can be considered as an amalgamation of the biological and the physical sciences, is recognized as a major scientific activity that has led to spectacular developments in biology. It has increased our knowledge of biological systems to such an extent that even industrial and commercial interests are now beginning to put their stamps on biological research. A major part of these developments took place during the last two decades. Therefore, an introductory textbook on biophysics that was published a dozen years ago (c. Sybesma, An Introduction to Biophysics, Academic Press, 1977) no longer could fulfil " ... the need for a comprehensive but elementary textbook ... -" (R. Cammack, Nature 272 (1978), 96). However, because of the increased proliferation of biophysics into higher education, the need for introductory course texts on biophysics is stronger than ever. This fact, together with valuable comments of many readers, have encouraged me to revise the original book.

Book Molecular and Cellular Biophysics

Download or read book Molecular and Cellular Biophysics written by Meyer B. Jackson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-12 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular and Cellular Biophysics provides advanced undergraduate and graduate students with a foundation in the basic concepts of biophysics. Students who have taken physical chemistry and calculus courses will find this book an accessible and valuable aid in learning how these concepts can be used in biological research. The text provides a rigorous treatment of the fundamental theories in biophysics and illustrates their application with examples. Conformational transitions of proteins are studied first using thermodynamics, and subsequently with kinetics. Allosteric theory is developed as the synthesis of conformational transitions and association reactions. Basic ideas of thermodynamics and kinetics are applied to topics such as protein folding, enzyme catalysis and ion channel permeation. These concepts are then used as the building blocks in a treatment of membrane excitability. Through these examples, students will gain an understanding of the general importance and broad applicability of biophysical principles to biological problems.
