This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginning of the Temperance Movement in Vineland Early in its history Vineland became widely known through its temperance policy, the decisive action of the settlers in preventing the sale of intoxicating liquors and the annual vote against license keeping the town free from the demoralizing influence of the saloon and legalized liquor traffic. Through this effort on the part of its citizens, Vineland acquired a reputation for sobriety, industry and intelligence, which it has maintained for the half century of its existence! This has not been accomplished without persistent work by those who had the best interest of the community at heart, attempts having been made to establish the saloon in Vineland against the will of the people. While many of the earnest workers in the cause of temperance have passed from this field of action there still remain others who will continue the work so successfully maintained. With the ever growing public sentiment against the liquor traffic the present inhabitants or Vineland cannot allow the labors of the faithful men and women to be undone or the moral standard lowered. All citizens without regard to personal prejudice should unite in upholding the temperance policy established in June 1863. Book The Temperance Movement

Download or read book The Temperance Movement written by Henry William Blair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Movement: Or the Conflict Between Man and Alcohol The conflict between man and alcohol is as old as civiliza tion, more destructive than any other form of warfare, and as fierce to-day as at any time since the beginning. It is not an exaggeration to say that no other evil known in human history has been of such vast proportions and lamentable consequences as that of alcoholic intemperance. As the whole past of the race has been cursed by it, so its whole future is threatened with increasing calamity, unless there be a period put to its ravages. It is a peculiarity of this curse that it is developed by civilization, and then, like the parricide, it destroys the source of its own life. But although alcohol is his special foe, it by no means confines its dagger and chalice to civilized man. Combining with the spirit of a mercenary commerce, this active essence of evil is hunting and extirpating the weaker races and indigenous populations of uncivilized countries from the face of the earth. The object of this book is, if possible, to arrest the atten tion of the American, if of no other people; to place before them the leading facts which enter into the great debate now pending on our own and the European continents, and to assist man, however feebly, in this great struggle with alcohol for his life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Temperance The Temperance Reform long since engaged sufficient learning and talent in its advocacy to rescue it from contempt. This vast agitation, which for more than a third of a century has stirred the mind and the heart of society, has evolved a literature of its own, which is more than respectable. Yet of the tens of thousands of speeches, sermons, addresses and lectures; the editorials, reports and prize essays; the papers, tracts, pamphlets and volumes which this prolonged and arduous discussion has elicited, there are no productions on this subject which are marked with so much learning, eloquence and wisdom, as these eleven Lectures by President Noir. The mature fruits of the orator, who, at the age of thirty, pronounced a discourse on the death of Hamilton, which has made him famous for eloquence ever since - the wise and efficient President, ever since that year (1804), of Union College - the beloved and honored preceptor of fifty-three successive classes of collegians, and now a patriarch hardly less of Temperance than of education; the mature fruits of so gifted, so experienced, so profound, so sagacious an intellect; the vivacity and fervor of the author's style; the beautiful truth-seeking spirit which marks his investigations, his tireless patience of research, his unfailing charity and candor to all opponents, his devout deference to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures, and last, but not least, his own great personal renown; these circumstances unite to concentrate upon these Lectures a degree of interest and attention which is commanded by no other volume on this vast social reform; a social reform, let it be added, which, more than all others combined, engrosses the thoughts and the feelings, the hopes and the fears, of this generation of men. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirror of Intemperance, and the History of Temperance Reform: To Which Is Added the Life and Death of King Alcohol, and Original and Selected Anecdotes It was regarded as the pleasant cordial; the cheerful restorative; the friend of the infant; the comforter of the enfeebled mother; the universal token of hospitality. It accompanied the laborer in his toil; went with the mariner on his distant voy age; cheered and animated the carpenter, the mason, the blacksmith, the glass-blower, and other mechanics at their various trades. It was regarded as an excellent domestic medicine, good for a cold, a cough, a pain in the stomach or side, and weak ness in the limbs, and loss of appetite and general debility. Thus the poisonous liquid had come into general use, and was as generally abused. According to a statistical table, compiled from official returns and authentic documents by R. M. Hartley, Esq., Secretary of the New York State Temperance Society, it appears that the citizens of these United States have consumed on an average, every year, from the late war up to 1830, more than eighty and a half millions of gallons of spiritous liquors; and the annual cost of this was not less than thirty-five and a half millions of dollars! Book The National Temperance Offering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Temperance Offering: And Sons and Daughters of Temperance Gift Inspired wisdom centuries ago declared of making many books there is no end. Had Solomon spoken this in reference to our own age it would have been pre-eminently true, and if the present generation is not growing in wisdom it cannot be for the want of mental aliment. It is to be feared that the mind is dissipated, and the heart depraved, by being required to feed upon the worthless trash furnished by a prolific press. Even in this bookmaking age, a good book is a jewel. A great responsibility rests upon those who offer food to the immortal nature, for the mind once taken captive, like the appetite of the drunkard, demands more similar poison to appease depraved desire. Our design in getting up this volume, is to add to the stock of pure temperance literature, to elevate in the public mind, that reform so full of promised blessings to the present and coming generations.
