Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beauties of French History The Beauties of History consist, of course, in a display of its most illustrious characters and its most instructive events. The object of the present volume is to afford, accompanied by historical data, as correct an idea as could be preserved within a space necessarily limited, of the most remarkable circumstances that have taken place, and the most extraordinary men who have flourished in the kingdom of France, from the earliest period of its history to the times in which we live. And, it is presumed, that, while contributing to their amusement, especial care has been taken to add to the information of the young. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of France It Often happens that those of us who live in great cities do not know our next door neighbors. In the great world it is very much the same and we know little or nothing about our neighbors. Hundreds of years ago a French writer called us his next neighbor. It was impossible, he said, to write about France without also writing about England. That is very true, for during hundreds of years the history of the two countries mixed and mingled. Yet in spite of that Jacques Bonhomme and John Bull have gone on liv ing side by side knowing little of each other's history, understanding little of each other's ways. For during hundreds of years France and England were deadly enemies, and Englishmen cared little about the history of France. They thought that they knew enough about Frenchmen when they knew how to fight them. But those days have long gone past, and now Jacques Bonhomme is not only our next neighbor, but our very good friend. That being so, British boys and girls are no longer con tent to know nothing about this friend, and several years ago I got a letter from a little English boy. I like that book, he said, and I wish you would write one just the same, only about France, because we can't find anything nice about France. Since then I have received many such letters both from British boys and girls and from their cousins in America. I promised them all that some day they should have the book they asked for. They were not very pleased with that promise, I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book French History for English Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book French History for English Children Classic Reprint written by Sarah Brook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French History for English Children The country which we now call France was not always called so, nor were the people who live in it always called the French. When it is first mentioned, which is in old Latin books written more than 1800 years ago, it is called Gallia, or Gaul, and the people are spoken of as Gauls. Gaul was in some respects the same as France is now, and in some respects very different. It was the same, or nearly the same, in its mountains, rivers, and some of the chief towns it was different in its roads, fields, villages, and, more than all, in the people who lived in it. 'when I say that some of the towns were the same, I do not mean that they look the same now as they did then, but that the Gauls had towns in many of the places where the French now have them, and that they have lasted with almost the same names ever Since. Book Vive la Revolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Steel
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0743208056
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Vive la Revolution written by Mark Steel and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us, the French Revolution has been reduced to jokes about Marie-Antoinette, guillotines and the Scarlet Pimpernel. But for Mark Steel, bestselling author of REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL, the French Revolution was one of the most inspirational moments in human history - a moment when ordinary people changed the world and became extraordinary. It deserves better jokes than that. In this revolutionary new book, Steel banishes stuffiness from history, telling us what happened in France between the storming of the Bastille and the rise of Napoleon, bringing to life the people who made them happen. His account is dominated by bizarre events and splendid characters, from the famously odd Robespierre, Danton and Thomas Paine, to the less well known Drouet, the local postman who arrested the fleeing King because he recognised him as the man off of the money. VIVE LA REVOLUTION is an uproariously serious work of history - brilliantly funny and insightful, it puts the peculiarity of individual people back at the centre of the story.

Download or read book Specimens of French Literature from Villon to Hugo written by George Saintsbury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens Of French Literature From Villon To Hugo: Selected And Edited T un origin of this book has been described in the Preface of the Short History of French Literature (c larendon Press), to which it is intended to form a companion. I need not here weary the reader by indicating at length the various objects I have had before me in the compilation. Among these, complete illustration of the beauties of any particular author has, it is needless to say, found no place, much less collection of my own favourite pieces. It has occasionally been necessary, for the sake of completing the panorama, to draw on what some people may not think the best work of individual writers. To make the whole a sufficient tableau of the various achievements of French literature from the literary point of view has been the main thing considered. Must emphasise the words from the literary point of view, ' because from any other the allotment of 3pace may seem oepricious. It has also to be remembered that some kinds of literature, such as prose fiction and drama, especially the latter, lend themselves with difliculty to the purpose. For instance, Racine is undoubtedly a greater name in French literature than Alfred de Musset. But Racine wrote in astyle which has few variations, and which is peculiarly difficult to exhibit in those variations except at great length. For the present purpose therefore a single extract suflices Again, Musset is, according to some, a greater name than Gautier, according to none, perhaps, a less. But Gautier was master of a variety of forms which are very different from each other and can be well illustrated, all being im portant as instances of the powers of the language: while Musset was more confined in range, and even within that range (as in his incomparable Proverbes) cannot be always shewn by sample at all. These are some of the conside rations which impose on the compiler of such a book as this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Little Stories of France Classic Reprint

Download or read book Little Stories of France Classic Reprint written by Maude Barrows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Stories of France The child needs the background of history as an aid to the interpretation of his experience and for the understanding of current events. In our cosmopolitan life, since we are in close touch with all peoples and are constantly hearing about them, there is need at least of the simplest elementary facts in the history of the great nations. The French people have held such a central position in thefworld's affairs, and have contributed so much to civilization, that the young student should at an early stage possess himself of the outlines Of their history. He is then enabled to put together the past and present Of that interesting country and to view the one in the light of the other. Then, too, the fact that French is the first foreign language which American children are expected to study is another valid reason for placing before them in its most interesting form the main facts of French history. Book A History of French Art 1100 1899 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Art, 1100-1899 In other nations we see that their Art has undoubtedly been affected by conditions of race, soil, and climate. The blue Sky and blue waves Of Italy - its vines, and olives, and cypress groves, the grace and charm of its women, in whom the mysterious attraction of the goddess Of antiquity seems to live afresh, were predestined to produce that most perfect flower of Art, which has made the whole country a shrine. And to that shrine a ceaseless stream of devotees have flocked for hundreds of years, paying eternal homage to eternal beauty. In Spain - the land of fierce adventure and, passionate serenade, severe in its natural aspects, with a people of strongly-marked characteristics, tough as their own Toledo blades, gloomy and fanatical in their religion - we get the very key to Spanish Art. And the inex pressible charm which reigns over the English landscape - the sense of tranquil security - the country life and love of nature which are SO closely bound up with the life of the whole nation - the deep, heavy colour - the moist verdure of hedgerow and pasture, woodland and moorland - to all these elements we owe our great landscape artists, who have so nobly interpreted the solid, steadfast, yet tender beauty of their country. France is in some respects the most richly-dowered country on earth, both in the characteristics of her race and in the diversity of her natural gifts. And France has always captivated the world by her very contradictions. Despite momentary irritations and impatiences, she must always be, not only to her children, but to all who have once experienced her subtle charm, what she was called of old La douce France Her race, composed of many elements, has pre served the characteristics Of each, and gradually fused them into a harmonious whole. Book French Furniture Under Louis XVI and the Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book French Furniture Under Louis XVI and the Empire Classic Reprint written by Roger De Felice and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Furniture Under Louis XVI and the Empire In this volume Empire furniture will occupy much less space than Louis Seize. It may perhaps be enough to say that, in our opinion, this inequality is amply justified by the differences in merit, comfort, and adaptableness to the needs of ordinary life that exist between the two styles; but there is one more solid and positive reason. The aim of this handbook, like its predecessors, is to impart a better knowledge of the furniture of past times, but most of all the furniture that was simple and practical, the good, honest pieces with no pretentions to sham luxuriousness, belonging to the modest middle classes or even the country folk of old France. Now, the Empire Style never had time to make its way into the depths of the provinces, where everything is so slow to change. In any case, how could that style, so learned and archaeological, which had sprung finished and complete from the brain of a few fanatical devotees of antiquity, as one Minerva sprang in full panoply from out of the head of Jupiter - how could that style, so lacking in tradition, ever have found favour with the country people of France? How could they have understood it? And accordingly we find it left no trace in the output of the workshops of Provence or Normandy or Brittany. Book A New History of French Literature

Download or read book A New History of French Literature written by Denis Hollier and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-19 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for the general reader, this splendid introduction to French literature from 842 A.D.—the date of the earliest surviving document in any Romance language—to the present decade is the most compact and imaginative single-volume guide available in English to the French literary tradition. In fact, no comparable work exists in either language. It is not the customary inventory of authors and titles but rather a collection of wide-angled views of historical and cultural phenomena. It sets before us writers, public figures, criminals, saints, and monarchs, as well as religious, cultural, and social revolutions. It gives us books, paintings, public monuments, even TV shows. Written by 164 American and European specialists, the essays are introduced by date and arranged in chronological order, but here ends the book’s resemblance to the usual history of literature. Each date is followed by a headline evoking an event that indicates the chronological point of departure. Usually the event is literary—the publication of an original work, a journal, a translation, the first performance of a play, the death of an author—but some events are literary only in terms of their repercussions and resonances. Essays devoted to a genre exist alongside essays devoted to one book, institutions are presented side by side with literary movements, and large surveys appear next to detailed discussions of specific landmarks. No article is limited to the “life and works” of a single author. Proust, for example, appears through various lenses: fleetingly, in 1701, apropos of Antoine Galland’s translation of The Thousand and One Nights; in 1898, in connection with the Dreyfus Affair; in 1905, on the occasion of the law on the separation of church and state; in 1911, in relation to Gide and their different treatments of homosexuality; and at his death in 1922. Without attempting to cover every author, work, and cultural development since the Serments de Strasbourg in 842, this history succeeds in being both informative and critical about the more than 1,000 years it describes. The contributors offer us a chance to appreciate not only French culture but also the major critical positions in literary studies today. A New History of French Literature will be essential reading for all engaged in the study of French culture and for all who are interested in it. It is an authoritative, lively, and readable volume.

Is like the kaleidoscope, of which every evolution presents a new phase of harmony and beauty; but to the more humble chronicler, captivated as he cannot fail to be by its general effect, it loses somewhat of its splen dour - compelled as he is to dismount the machine, and by observing analytically the concomitant atoms from whence proceed the marvellous combinations which, as a whole, produce such wonderful effects, to recognise the utter worthlessness of many of its details.
