Book excerpt: Chief inspector Mushtaq Hussain is posted to a police station in Patparganj - a small hill station nestling in the Western Ghats. While idly leafing through the old case files at the station, he comes across one that had caused a sensation of sorts when he used to be a student-boarder at the Palace School, Patparganj. Though the file is marked 'Closed' many questions remain unanswered Susan, whose memories stir feelings in Mushtaq's heart, had been found, late at night, lying unconscious beside Altaf, their classmate, in a clearing in the bush around the Palace school estate. What was the duo doing there at that time? Susan had been badly mauled and angry scratch marks had appeared all over the skin exposed due to torn clothing. Who had attacked Susan and why? Altaf had his head bludgeoned with blood flowing through a gaping wound near his neck. Who had struck Altaf? Gonu, the mentally challenged school mascot, had stood at the crime scene with a bloodied hockey stick in his hand. Why? How did he get there? Miss Stokes, Gonu's mother and the first one to witness the tableau, had come across Gonu struggling with a person, who, when confronted by Miss Stokes, had fled away into the thicket before she could have a closer look at his face. Who was the fourth person? Mushtaq decides to investigate. He sets the stage for the dramatis personae of that night to come together once again hoping to reignite the passions that could throw up some answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this tell-all autobiography, Sri M writes about his fascinating journey as a young man from the southern coast of India to the mystical Himalayan Mountains. At the age of nineteen and a half, he felt an irresistible urge to go to the Himalayas in quest for his great Master. He finally met his Master at the Vyasa Cave, beyond the Badrinath shrine. After spending three and half years with his Master, wandering freely across the length and breadth of the Himalayan ranges, he was instructed to go back to live in the plains and lead a normal life. He started working for a living, fulfilled his social commitments and prepared himself to teach others all that he had learned and experienced. This book reveals the spiritual journey of a young lad from Kerala, who by his sincerity and dedication evolved into a living yogi. Sri M shares his knowledge of the Upanishads and spiritual insights born out of first hand experiences in his autobiography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The award-winning novelist Rohinton Mistry is recognised as one of the most important contemporary writers of postcolonial literature. This study - the first of its kind - will provide scholars and students with an insight into the key features of Mistry's work. Peter Morey suggests how the author's writing can be read in terms of recent Indian political history, his native Zoroastrian culture and ethos, conventions of oral storytellling common to Persia and South Asia, and the experience of migration which now sees him living in Canada. The texts are viewed through the lens of diaspora and minority discourse theories to show how Mistry's writing is illustrative of marginal positions in relation to sanctioned national identities.

Whatever the truth of that assertion, there is little question about his skill as a witty, eloquent and entertaining writer. This book collects the best of over three decades of the author’s prose—including his finest journalistic pieces, short stories, translations, jokes, plays as well as excerpts from his non-fiction books and novels. Taken together, the pieces in this selection (some of which have never been published before) show just why Khushwant Singh is the country’s most widely read columnist and one of its most celebrated authors.

Book Multiculturalism and Identity Politics

Download or read book Multiculturalism and Identity Politics written by Kalika Shah and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at analysing the fiction produced by the expatriate Parsee writers of the Indian subcontinent: Bapsi Sidhwa, Rohinton Mistry and Boman Desai. These Parsee writers of the South Asian origin have emigrated to Canada and USA in the latter part of the twentieth century. Their works offer several possibilities seen from the multicultural point of view. The fiction of these Parsee diasporic writers examines the problem of migration, relocation and changing identities from a vantage point of distance gained by an insider’s view of their community and an outsider’s view from the host country. Dislocations, even when voluntary, always have a traumatic side to it due to the process of acculturation, assimilation into or differences with the host country and the issue of rights and privileges in the new location. For the diasporic communities of different backgrounds, their memory, history and cultural beliefs are the important factors that determine their identities. These Parsee novels demonstrate how individual and group/collective identities of the Parsees get constructed and reconstructed/redefined against the changing multinational contexts.
