Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history of the Austro-Prussian-Italian War of 1866, which paved the way for German and Italian unification. It is based upon extensive new research in the state and military archives of Austria, Germany, and Italy. Geoffrey Wawro describes Prussia's successful invasion of Habsburg Venetia, and the wretched collapse of the Austrian army in July 1866. Although the book gives a thorough accounting of both the Prussian and Italian war efforts, it is most notable for the light it sheds on the Austrians. Through painstaking archival research, Wawro reconstructs the Austrian campaign, blow-by-blow, hour-by-hour. Blending military and social history, he describes the terror and panic that overtook Austria's regiments of the line in each clash with the Prussians. He reveals the unconscionable blundering of the Austrian commandant and his chief deputies who fumbled away key strategic advantages and ultimately lost a war - crucial to the fortunes of the Habsburg Monarchy - that most European pundits had predicted they would win.

Download or read book K niggr tz written by Arthur L. Wagner and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pivotal engagement in the formation of modern Europe This book contains two accounts--one substantial, the other concise and illustrated--describing the Battle of KOniggrAtz (sometimes known as The Battle of Sadowa) which was the principal land engagement of the Seven Weeks War (also known as the Austro-Prussian War) fought in early July of 1866. The outcome was a decisive victory for the Prussians who achieved success by the tactic of converging numerous units upon a concentrated point which trapped the Imperial Austrian forces between them. This war was an important stage in the process of German hegemony and departure from the longstanding influence of the Austrian Empire. It was a vital conflict in terms of European history, since it formed not only an influential step towards German unification as parts of Bavaria, Hanover and other states were annexed by Prussia, but also because it brought about the annexation of Venetia by Italy. The in depth study of this interesting campaign, by the American author of the principal work in this special Leonaur edition, contrasts the execution of the campaign with similar campaign and battlefield tactics of the civil war in America which had been concluded shortly before these events took place. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book Piracy and Maritime Crime Historical and Modern Case Studies

Download or read book Piracy and Maritime Crime Historical and Modern Case Studies written by Bruce A. Ellerman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piracy is a basic and fundamental concern for all navies. From almost the beginning of state-sponsored navies, piracy suppression has been one of their major responsibilities -- when Julius Caesar was captured by pirates in 76 BCE, the first thing he did after paying the pirates' ransom and being released was to fit "out a squadron of ships to take his revenge." Despite piracy's importance and the continued frequency of piratical attacks, however, relatively few scholarly works have been written analyzing cases of modern piracy and piracy suppression in terms of varying strategic, policy, and operational decisions. This edited collection of case studies attempts to fill this gap. There have been a number of important historical studies that have dealt with the subjects of piracy and piracy suppression. Books written from the point of view of those wishing to end piracy have tended to focus on legal issues, including the rights of victims, the procedures and decisions of Admiralty courts in punishing pirates, and the capture of piracy ships as prizes. Others have looked at the existence of piracy in terms of one particular place or time period, with the Barbary Coast and the Caribbean Sea claiming disproportionate shares of attention. Pirates are often romanticized; Forbes magazine has recently listed history's top-earning pirates, including Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy at US$120 million (2008 dollars), Sir Francis Drake at US$115 million, and Thomas Tew at US$103 million. More famous pirates, like Edward Teach (Blackbeard), came in far down the list, at tenth place, with only US$12.5 million.
