In the early 1800s new scientific precepts propelled a wave of invention and design modifications. Book excerpt: Carl (Charles) Almenräder (1786-1846), bassoonist, composer, instrument maker and pedagogue, was a pivotal figure in the history of the bassoon in 19th-century Germany. He was one of the foremost bassoonists of his time, a composer of numerous works for the bassoon, including at least six unpublished concerti, an instrument maker both under the auspices of B. Schotts Söhne and as co-founder of the still-existent firm Wilhelm Heckel GmbH, and was the author of a comprehensive bassoon tutor, fully titled Vollständige theoretisch-praktische Fagottschule (the "Bassoon Method"). The Bassoon Method was published in 1843 in a bilingual German-French edition. It has never appeared in an English translation. The original Bassoon Method comprises twenty chapters and five tables, each chapter devoted to one aspect of learning to play the bassoon, such as posture, supporting the bassoon, articulation, breathing, ornamentation, public performance considerations, care and maintenance, and reedmaking. This new edition includes an English translation of the textual portions of the Bassoon Method and clean, clearly legible printings of all the musical examples, many of which have not been available in a usable edition since the original printing. Also included in the new edition are translations of other works to which Almenräder refers in the Bassoon Method, such as his own article on the care and storage of bassoon reeds, and articles from the following contemporaneous sources: Schilling, Gustave, Encyclopädie der gesammten musikalischen Wissenschaften, oder, Universal-Lexikon der Tonkunst, 6 vols.
