Brinton: In this thought-provoking work, Daniel G. Brinton examines the foundations of social relations and interactions from an ethnic psychological perspective. Brinton explores how cultural, historical, and psychological factors shape human interactions within and between different ethnic groups. "The Basis of Social Relations" provides valuable insights into the complexities of human society and the dynamics of cultural identity. Key Aspects of the Book "The Basis of Social Relations: A Study in Ethnic Psychology": Ethnic Psychology: Brinton's book delves into the psychological aspects of ethnic identity, shedding light on how individuals perceive and interact with their own and other ethnic groups. Cultural Anthropology: The work draws from cultural anthropology and sociology to explore the formation and maintenance of social relationships across diverse cultural contexts. Identity and Belonging: "The Basis of Social Relations" discusses the concepts of identity, belonging, and the ways in which they influence social interactions and group dynamics. Daniel G. Brinton was an American anthropologist, archaeologist, and ethnologist born in 1837. He made significant contributions to the study of Native American languages and cultures, and his work extended to exploring broader themes of cultural anthropology and human psychology. Brinton's interdisciplinary approach to understanding social relations and ethnic psychology paved the way for further research in these fields.

Book excerpt: Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837-99) was an American surgeon, historian, archaeologist, and ethnologist. After graduating from Yale in 1858 he studied at Jefferson Medical College, later continuing his studies in Paris and Heidelberg. During the American Civil War he was a surgeon in the Union army, but suffered sun-stroke at the Third Battle of Chattanooga and was never after able to travel in very hot weather, a handicap that affected his career as an ethnologist. After the war, Brinton practiced medicine in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and was editor of the Medical and Surgical Reporter in Philadelphia from 1874-87. He became professor of ethnology and archaeology in the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia in 1884, and was professor of American linguistics and archaeology in the University of Pennsylvania from 1886 until his death. Brinton was a member of numerous learned societies in the US and in Europe, serving as president to several at different times. Between 1868-99 he wrote many books and a large number of pamphlets, addresses, and magazine articles, including American Hero-Myths: A Study in the Native Religions of the Western Continent; The Myths of the New World; Races and Peoples: Lectures on the Science of Ethnography; and Nagualism, A study in Native American Folk-Lore and History. This work, subtitled A Study in Ethnic Psychology, was published posthumously in 1902 in Putnam's 'The Science Series', having been all but completed at the time of Brinton's death.

Book excerpt: Publisher description: The Lightning Shrikes is a cinematic novel about an American Indian softball team in a national coed professional league sponsored by a rich and powerful Nike-like company. The team is led by an ex-major leaguer with a gift for making the most of any business opportunity and a great eye for talent -- along with a weakness for home cooking -- stocked with the best Native athletes from around the country, most with no experience on the diamond, The Shrikes work hard to destroy misconceptions about Native Americans, to instill pride in their people(s), to promote greater communication between Native tribes and nations, and to build the skills and teamwork needed to win the inaugural national championship. Devon Mihesuah makes her characters real, unlike the Hollywood or New Age Indian caricatures that are usually foisted upon the public. The Lightning Shrikes are far from perfect: they're good and bad, strong and weak, determined and vacillating, but in the end, like the fierce shrike -- the diminutive butcher bird of the Western plains that impales its often much larger prey, they prevail against the odds.
