Book excerpt: Prince Tristan finds a new life in a foreign land. He will pay any price to free his princess from the wicked witch, but it will cost him more than he can imagine to save his kingdom. Tristan already despairs for his kingdom in the hands of his drunken, idolatrous older brother. A raging river whips him a hundred miles away to an impoverished, isolated village in a foreign land. No one believes who he is and he can find no way to return home. Finally Tristan manages to make a place in his new home as a teacher, and perhaps has found the beginnings of love.In one agonizing night, Tristan is certain he's lost any hope for the future. God once again gives him an entirely new life, until it collides with his old one. In spite of the joy of meeting an old friend, Tristan learns of a shocking accusation that he cannot let go unanswered. When he finally returns home, it is to an old enemy reaching out to grasp his kingdom. Can God raise up a savior? Can it possibly be Tristan? Take up anew the tale of friendship, intrigue, love, and loss in each book in the Men of the Realmlands series. Excerpt: "Do you mind if I continue on a little way?" Tristan asked casually. "I thought I heard voices up ahead, and there's that cursed smell of smoke again.""All the more reason you should come back with us," Alex said firmly. "None of your men are out here at this time of day. I can't pretend to hear what you're talking about, or smell it either, but if there is someone out there I don't want you here alone."Tristan drew the sword he always carried when he left the estate, again, in spite of Mayra's protests. "Alex, men are coming this way. I have no idea how many, but it sounds like at least twenty. They're still a mile or two off. As you say, they aren't ours, but I do hear sounds like armor and swords clashing. I need you to take the Lady Mayra back to the house and bring some of our men as quickly as you can.""I can't leave you here!" Alex cried."I can't run," Tristan said desperately. "I can try to hide, and I will, but I have to know that you're taking Mayra to safety."

This volume collects previously unpublished studies on the subject by an interdisciplinary group of contributors, including Daniel Dennett, Alvin Goldman, Keith Lehrer, Leda Cosmides and John Tooby.

Book excerpt: First published in 2001. This is Volume 2 in a series on the science of mental health and focuses on Autism. It begins with an overview presentation of a case and a recent consensus description of diagnostic instruments for autistic-spectrum disorders. This is followed by recent epidemiologic data. Epidemiology has an enhanced prominence in studies of autism because there is an unresolved controversy about the incidence of new cases of autism. In some surveys the incidence of autism appears to be increasing, and the controversy is over whether this is a true observation or whether greater diagnostic awareness is leading to the apparent increase. This volume attempt to resolve the conflicting data as if autism is indeed on the rise, there must be a new, significant environmental risk factor, which has to be identified with a view to prevention.

Book Social and Communication Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Download or read book Social and Communication Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury written by Skye McDonald and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can seriously disrupt the social and communication skills that are basic requirements for everyday life. It is the loss of these interpersonal skills that can be the most devastating for people with TBI and their families. Although there are many books that focus upon TBI, none focus on communication and communication skills specifically. This book fills this important gap in the literature and provides information ranging from a broad overview of the nature of pathology following TBI and its effects on cognition and behaviour, through to the latest evidence about ways to assess and treat social and communication disorders. Much has changed in the field of communication disorders and TBI since the first edition of this book was published in 1999. There have been advances in neuroimaging, providing more accurate understanding of how the brain is damaged in TBI and also insights into its repair. There has been a burgeoning interest in social cognition, and advances in how communication is conceptualized, with a particular focus on the role of how context facilitates or impedes communicative ability. Most importantly, much has changed in the arena of rehabilitation. There is now a growing evidence base of treatments aimed at improving communication problems following TBI, new resources for accessing this information and renewed interest in different kinds of methods for demonstrating treatment effects. Bringing together a range of expert international researchers interested in understanding the nature and treatment of TBI this book covers topics from understanding how the brain damage occurs, how it affects social and communication skills and how these problems might be treated. As such it will be of great interest to clinicians, postgraduate and undergraduate students and researchers in neuropsychology, speech and language pathology.

Book Asperger Syndrome

Download or read book Asperger Syndrome written by Viktoria Lyons and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Kinsey, world famous American sexologist whose life is portrayed in the 2005 movie Kinsey had it. Stanley Kubrick, one of the most important and influential filmmakers of the last century and director of cinematic masterpieces such as Clockwork Orange, Lolita, and 2001 - Space Odyssey, fits the diagnosis. Undoubtedly, Patricia Highsmith, renowned writer of crime fiction, particularly the Ripley novels suffered from it. Likewise, Charles Darwin, one of the most influential and revolutionary scientist of all times as well as Bertrand Russell, foremost philosopher and mathematician of the 20th century meet diagnostic criteria for Asperger syndrome. Other less well known personalities such as the Swiss writer Robert Walser, Joy Adamson famous for her work with animals in Africa, the controversial British politician Enoch Powell, the gifted mathematician Kurt Godel and the American child prodigy William James Sidis are also linked to the condition. Asperger syndrome is a neuropsychiatric condition, a lifelong and pervasive developmental disorder, which sometimes is associated with high intelligence and creativity. very little emphasis on special strengths or talents. Some individuals with Asperger Syndrome are extremely successful in their area of expertise and lead fulfilling lives despite or because of their condition while others are considered failures and life for them is an endless struggle on the margins of society. For some, Asperger syndrome appears to be a gift, for others a curse. In order to address this issue, the authors analyse the life histories of ten historical and contemporary figures from the world of literature, film, politics, science, philosophy and mathematics who had Asperger syndrome, against the backdrop of neuropsychological theories of autism/Asperger syndrome, latest neurobiological research data and current interpretation of special gifts and assets. They also advance a new hypothesis of Asperger syndrome as a disorder of the social self based on right hemisphere dysfunction, and demonstrate that the impact of the disorder on the development of the Self of each individual manifests itself in very distinct ways.
