Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptist History of South Dakota This generation is living in a epoch of history making. The United States census of 1890 revealed facts respecting the material growth and development of this country to which there has been no parallel in the history of the world. Invention has multiplied many fold mans capacity and power for work. By the application of these inventions to the farm and to the factory, to commerce and to transportation, this growth has been made possible. When the second half of the century now drawing to a close began, the vast region known as the Mississippi valley was for the most part the hunting ground of the red man, and the home of the buffalo and the antelope. Under the industrious hand of the pioneer settler, the desert has been made to blossom as the rose. In 1850 the population of the twelve prairie states, including Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri, was 5,400,000; in 1890 it was 22,362,000. During this period of forty years, the virgin soil in these twelve states was changed into productive farms, at the rate of 13,000 acres per day. Two-thirds of the grain produced, and of the live stock raised, are found in these twelve states. Their development in manufacturing interests has not been less marvellous. In 1850 they reported 111,000 operatives earning $20,000,000 in wages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of South Dakota, Vol. 1 The first intent of all natural selection seems to be the development of character; the making of men for the peculiar needs of advancing and complex social relations and adapt ing them to the high purposes of God's plan for the ultimate perfecting of the race. The truth of the foregoing conclusion is readily discerned as we follow the spread of Christianity throughout Europe and under its influence forging, shaping and mellowing the barbarians of the continent into the anglo-saxon freemen who in the progress of time were called to carry to American shores the civilization which has come to be the wonder of the very fields whence came the seed. I have had some good opportunities of knowing the Baptists of South Carolina, and do not hesitate to say that, in many important particulars, the Baptists of this noble little State head the column of the Baptist hosts of the Southern Baptist Convention. In the ability of their ministry, the number of resident pastors and the number of parsonages, the regularity, systematic meth ods, liberality of their gifts, and in the steady progress they are making in the intelligence, zeal and efficiency of their churches, South Carolina Baptists are in the very forefront. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Baptists in the Western States East of the Mississippi That in such an amount of detail as Baptist history in these States written at the present time makes imper ative serious omissions will occur, is much to be feared. The writer has been especially anxious at this point, yet apprehends that with all his care and solicitude his success in making his work in this feature of it complete will be only partial. May he hope for the generous consider ation of his brethren in that regard? To have been in any sense unjust to any one, or to any interest, will be the more an occasion of regret as his long association with those of whom in these pages he often has occasion to write, and his personal relations to many things here to be recorded, have so much enlisted his own personal sympathy, while recalling associations, alike with the living and the dead, which often could not be thus re called without deep emotion. Book A History of the Baptists in the Middle States Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Baptists in the Middle States Classic Reprint written by Henry C. Vedder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Baptists in the Middle States This history is founded on original sources. Second-hand authorities on the subject are few, incomplete, and untrustworthy, and there was noth ing to do but seek and study the original documents. The task was the more difficult because the path was practically unbroken. There was from the first no lack of materials, but nobody had ever under taken to sift and combine them. There were no successes of predecessors to emulate, no blunders to profit by; all had to be done for the first time. That it is done as it should be done, as it might be done, is not claimed. The author is sure of but one thing: that he has worked with diligence, and a faithful effort to tell the story truthfully, without so overloading it with details as to make it confusing or wearisome. Some one who shall undertake the task in future years, with documents in the mean time accumulated, will avoid the mistakes of this book and make a far better.
