Book excerpt: In this rich exposition on the theological, historical, and sacramental significance of the baptismal font, Regina Kuehn describes the space designated for Baptism as "a home for the church, a regular meeting place for believers, [and] a recognizable location to which one can point in memory of a liturgical event." Drawing on an impressive array of artistic paintings, drawings, and photographs, Kuehn offers an indispensable guide to building and refurbishing this sacramental space, while also providing rich insight into the experience and mystery of Baptism. Book The Visual Culture of Baptism in the Middle Ages

Download or read book The Visual Culture of Baptism in the Middle Ages written by Harriet M. Sonne de Torrens and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by a group of European and North American scholars extends the traditional boundaries associated with the study of baptismal fonts. Previous scholarship about baptismal fonts has often focused on the purely stylistic, iconographical and liturgical perspectives, using primarily ecclesiastical and liturgical documentation. This book shows the wealth of new information that baptismal fonts can offer when scholars adopt interdisciplinary approaches and engage in readings that question traditional assumptions inherited in scholarship.

Book Font of Pardon and New Life

Download or read book Font of Pardon and New Life written by Lyle D. Bierma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a study of the historical development and impact of John Calvin's doctrine of baptismal efficacy. The primary questions it addresses are (1) whether Calvin taught an "instrumental" doctrine of baptism, according to which the external sign of the sacrament serves as a means or instrument to convey the spiritual realities it signifies, and (2) whether Calvin's teaching on baptismal efficacy remained constant throughout his lifetime or underwent significant change. Secondarily, the work also examines whether such spiritual blessings, in Calvin's view, are conferred only in adult (believer) baptism or also in the baptism of infants, and what impact Calvin's doctrine of baptismal efficacy had on the Reformed confessional tradition that followed him. The book examines all of Calvin's writings on baptism-his Institutes, commentaries on Scripture, catechisms, polemical writings, and consensus documents-chronologically through five stages of his life and then analyzes the doctrine of baptismal efficacy in eight of the major Reformed confessions and catechisms from the age of confessional codification. It concludes that Calvin did indeed hold to an instrumental view of baptism; that this doctrine underwent change and development over the course of his life but not to the extent that some in the past have suggested; that his view of the efficacy of infant baptism was consistent with his doctrine of baptism in general; and that versions of Calvin's teaching can be found in many, though not all, of the major Reformed confessional documents of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries"--

Book Baptismal Imagery in Early Christianity

Download or read book Baptismal Imagery in Early Christianity written by Robin M. Jensen and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn from early Christian imagery about the theological meaning of baptism? Robin Jensen, a leading scholar of early Christian art and worship, examines multiple dimensions of the early Christian baptismal rite. She explores five models for understanding baptism--as cleansing from sin, sickness, and Satan; as incorporation into the community; as sanctifying and illuminative; as death and regeneration; and as the beginning of the new creation--showing how visual images, poetic language, architectural space, and symbolic actions signify and convey the theological meaning of this ritual practice. Considering image and action together, Jensen offers a holistic and integrated understanding of the power of baptism. The book is illustrated with photos.

Book Scriptural Baptism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Uuras Saarnivaara
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2003-05-30
  • ISBN : 1592442498
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Scriptural Baptism written by Uuras Saarnivaara and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-05-30 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a theological student in Finland, Dr. Saarnivaara became interested in the question of Scriptural baptism. Which baptism, he wondered, had the most authority: the one a person received in infancy, or the one received as an adult after a conscious conversion. Should he, as one who had been baptized in infancy, be baptized again, after his conversion, in order to be a Christian in the Biblical sense, or was the baptism he received as a child valid? In seeking an answer, he studied the Bible and the copious literature on both sides of the question. Now, in this book, cast in dialog form, Dr. Saarnivaara offers the result of his study, examining the question exhaustively from both sides. Some of the questions which are thoroughly discussed are: Was infant baptism practiced in the time of Christ and the Apostles? Did Christ want His Church to practice infant baptism, or baptism after conscious conversion? Does the New Testament teach baptism as a means of grace, or as an act of obedience and confession of faith? What does the Bible teach as the relationship between baptism and regeneration? What was the practice and teaching of the post-Apostolic and the Ancient Church? What was the original method of baptism: immersion or pouring (or sprinkling)? In developing his theme, Dr. Saarnivaara has set forth the pros and cons of this age-old and still acute problem with admirable exactitude and lucidity. It is easy for the layperson to comprehend, but it is not superficial reading. From the thousands who regard religious problems like baptism worthy of thoughtful consideration and study, however, Dr. Saarnivaara's book should receive keen attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the differences between Lutherans and Calvinists, and do they really matter? In Wittenberg vs. Geneva, Brian Thomas provides a biblical defense of the key doctrines that have divided the Lutheran and Reformed traditions for nearly five centuries. It is especially written to help those who may have an interest in the Lutheran church, but are concerned that her stance on doctrines like predestination or the sacraments may not have biblical support. To get to the heart of the matter, Pastor Thomas focuses solely upon those crucial scriptural texts that have led Lutheran and Reformed scholars down different paths to disparate conclusions as he spars with popular Calvinist theologians from the past and the present.
