Download or read book A History of the Stained Glass of St George s Chapel Windsor Castle written by Sarah Brown and published by St George's Chapel. This book was released on 2005 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle is one of the most famous buildings in the World, the venue for national pageant and ceremony since the Middle Ages. Created to be the architectural back-drop for the activities of the Order of the Garter, the pre-eminent chivalric order of medieval England, in modern times the chapel has become one of the country's premier tourist destinations. The stained glass of the chapel, dating from the early 16th century to the later 20th century, is one of its least familiar treasures. The chapel has always been served by the leading artist and craftsmen of the day and in designing for this most distinguished location, successive generations of glaziers have excelled themselves in the quality of their work. In this volume the history of the chapel's stained glass is explored by a team of distinguished stained glass historians and heraldic scholars for the first time, revealing a microcosm of English stained glass design across the centuries.

Download or read book Memoirs of the Court of George III written by Michael Kassler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 1631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George III was one of the longest reigning British monarchs, ruling over most of the English speaking world from 1760 to 1820. Despite his longevity, George’s reign was one of turmoil. Britain lost its colonies in the War of American Independence and the European political system changed dramatically in the wake of the French Revolution. Closer to home, problems with the King’s health led to a constitutional crisis. Charlotte Papendiek’s memoirs cover the first thirty years of George III’s reign, while Mary Delany’s letters provide a vivid portrait of her years at Windsor. Lucy Kennedy was another long-serving member of court whose previously unpublished diary provides a great deal of new detail about the King’s illness. Finally, the Queen herself provides further insights in the only two extant volumes of her diaries, published here for the first time. The edition will be invaluable to scholars of Georgian England as well as those researching the French and American Revolutions and the history and politics of the Regency period more widely.
Download or read book Purcell Manuscripts written by Robert Shay and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few details are known about the life of Henry Purcell. This book provides an in-depth analysis of the most obvious documentary evidence of Purcell's career - the music manuscripts of his own hand and those copied by his colleagues. Robert Shay and Robert Thompson offer a richly illustrated study of Purcell's sources, examining in detail the physical features of the manuscripts as well as their musical content. Their survey sheds light on the chronology of composition and copying of Purcell's works and reassesses the place of extant autographs in his musical development. Major sources are fully catalogued, providing information about the context in which Purcell's music was collected and performed, and his handwriting is more closely examined than ever before. The book represents a significant reference tool for scholars, applying a forensic approach that greatly enriches our knowledge of the composer and the music of his time.

Download or read book The English Bach Awakening written by Michael Kassler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Bach Awakening concerns the introduction into England of J.S. Bach's music and information about him. Hitherto this subject has been called 'the English Bach revival', but that is a misnomer. 'Revival' implies prior life, yet no reference to Bach or to his music is known to have been made in England during his lifetime (1685-1750). The book begins with a comprehensive chronology of the English Bach Awakening. Eight chapters follow, written by Dr Philip Olleson, Dr Yo Tomita and the editor, Michael Kassler, which treat particular parts of the Awakening and show how they developed. A focus of the book is the history of the manuscripts and the printed editions of Bach's '48' - The Well-tempered Clavier - in England at this time, and its culmination in the 'analysed' edition that Samuel Wesley and Charles Frederick Horn published in 1810-1813 and later revised. Wesley's multifaceted role in the Bach Awakening is detailed, as are the several efforts that were made to translate Forkel's biography of Bach into English. A chapter is devoted to A.F.C. Kollmann's endeavour to prove the regularity of Bach's Chromatic Fantasy, and the book concludes with a discussion of portraits of Bach in England before 1830.
