Its chief Object, apart from the artistic pleasure given by the pictures, is to help the traveller to understand what he sees while he is in the country, and afterwards to recall the pleasures and interests of his travels. At the same time there are many who can never hope to see the country, and for them a more exacting standard of information is desirable. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Attractions of the Nile and Its Banks, Vol. 1 of 2 With regard to the Antiquities of Egypt, I know that the less I say the better, because they have been so fully and so admirably handled by Sir Gardner Wilkinson, both in his large book on Egyptian Antiquities, and also in Murray's Hand book for Egypt, ' of which he is the learned author, as well as by many other explorers, English, French, German, and Italian. Bearing this in mind, I hope I shall not be considered too prolix on this absorbing theme, but at the same time, as it is scarcely possible for one who has dabbled in antiquarian pursuits from his youth, and is now Secretary to an Archaological Society, to pass by the pyramids and temples of Egypt without a word, I hope I may be excused if I do prose a little on this most engaging subject, and record my introduction to the monarchs of antiquarian remains, compared to which all hitherto explored ruins become dwarfed into pigmy relics, and even our British earthworks and famous stone temples of Wiltshire seem of modern date. Book Up the Nile by Steam Classic Reprint

Download or read book Up the Nile by Steam Classic Reprint written by R. Etzensberger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Up the Nile by Steam Even the most enthusiastic admirer of this majestic river must confess that the scenery on its banks is very tame, and soon becomes monotonous. On board a fast sailing isteamer there is continual change, and every turn brings new features, new sights in view. A Dahabeah, when becalmed, may be detained in the same spot for a whole week; or, if the passengers insist, as they must do if they want to move on, and there is no head wind, the crew will work away and haul the boat up stream - a very painful sight, and really galley work. Look at those poor fellows yoked together with a rope round their breasts, toiling along with outstretched and swollen necks, and listen to their painful song as they work, slowly advancing, by short steps, at the rate of from five to six miles per day Float ing down river, if contrary winds prevail, Dahabeahs are no better off. Arabs can do nothing without singing most piteously; their songs, which are described fully in every guide book, may amuse you for a whole day, but become, from constant repetition, quite unbearable. Book A Thousand Miles Up the Nile Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Miles Up the Nile, Vol. 2 of 2 From Korosko to Derr, the actual distance is about eleven miles and a half; but what with obstructions in the bed of the river, and what with a wind that would have been favourable but for another great bend which the Nile takes towards the East, those eleven miles and a half cost us the best part of two days' hard tracking. Landing from time to time when the boat was close in shore, we found the order of planting every where the same, lupins and lentils on the slope against the water-line; an uninterrupted grove of palms on the edge of the bank; in the space beyond, fields of cotton and young corn; and then the desert. The arable soil was divided off, as usual, by hundreds of water channels; and seemed to be excellently farmed as well as abundantly irrigated. Not a weed was to be seen; not an inch of soil appeared to be wasted. In odd corners where there was room for nothing else, cu cumbers and vegetable-marrows flourished and bore fruit. Nowhere had we seen castor-berries so large, cotton-pods so full, or palms so lofty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Miles Up the Nile Ampere has put Egypt in an epigram. A donkey ride and a boating-trip interspersed with ruins does, in fact, sum up in a single line the whole experience of the Nile traveller. Apropos of these three things - the donkeys, the boat, and the ruins - it may be said that a good English saddle and a comfortable Dahabeeyah add very considerably to the pleasure of the journey; and that the more one knows about the past history of the country, the more one enjoys the ruins.' Book The Nile

Book excerpt: From Herodotus's day to the present political upheavals, the steady flow of the Nile has been Egypt's heartbeat. It has shaped its geography, controlled its economy and moulded its civilisation. The same stretch of water which conveyed Pharaonic battleships, Ptolemaic grain ships, Roman troop-carriers and Victorian steamers today carries modern-day tourists past bankside settlements in which rural life – fishing, farming, flooding – continues much as it has for millennia. At this most critical juncture in the country's history, foremost Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson takes us on a journey up the Nile, north from Lake Victoria, from Cataract to Cataract, past the Aswan Dam, to the delta. The country is a palimpsest, every age has left its trace: as we pass the Nilometer on the island of Elephantine which since the days of the Pharaohs has measured the height of Nile floodwaters to predict the following season's agricultural yield and set the parameters for the entire Egyptian economy, the wonders of Giza which bear the scars of assault by nineteenth-century archaeologists and the modern-day unbridled urban expansion of Cairo – and in Egypt's earliest art (prehistoric images of fish-traps carved into cliffs) and the Arab Spring (fought on the bridges of Cairo) – the Nile is our guide to understanding the past and present of this unique, chaotic, vital, conservative yet rapidly changing land.

The shaduf workers had abandoned their skin-covered buckets and bamboo poles to seek shelter from the heat beneath a straggling tree or a straw mat elevated on stalks of ripe sugar cane. The boats of the fishermen lay in little coves, where the sails were spread as awnings to shade their crews. The fellaheen laborers had all retired to their clay huts to sleep through this fiercest period of the afternoon heat.
