Book Producer of Controversy

Download or read book Producer of Controversy written by Jennifer Frost and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With films ranging from High Noon to Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Stanley Kramer (1913–2001) was one of the most successful and prolific director-producers of his day. But even as critics praised his courage in taking on such issues as nuclear war, racism, fascism, and the battle between science and religion, others condemned his work as “emptily pretentious“ and “hollow, falsely sentimental, overproduced.” Whether Kramer was “one of the great filmmakers of all time” (Kevin Spacey at the Golden Globe Awards) or “one of Hollywood’s worst directors” (preeminent film critic Andrew Sarris in The Village Voice), he had a strong and undeniable influence on American culture during the Cold War. Producer of Controversy is the first book to take a close-up look at Kramer’s career, films, and liberal politics in an effort to explain his contributions and historical significance. Kramer learned filmmaking within the old studio system, but over a career spanning forty years he did much to shape the independent moviemaking that emerged after World War II. Jennifer Frost pays particular attention to four of his key “message movies”—The Defiant Ones, On the Beach, Inherit the Wind, and Judgment at Nuremberg—to show how Kramer’s controversial films opened up public debate about the most important issues of his time—among average filmgoers as well as professional critics, political commentators, and public figures. In this context, she for the first time fully documents the Hollywood Right’s attacks on Kramer in the 1950s; details his resistance to the anticommunist Red Scare and the Hollywood blacklist; exposes his role as a cultural diplomat with the Soviet Union; and reveals his important contribution to the liberal and radical politics of the 1960s. Her book is at once an absorbing work of cultural history and a thoroughgoing reassessment of Stanley Kramer’s place in the pantheon of American filmmakers.

Book The Music Has Gone Out of the Movement

Download or read book The Music Has Gone Out of the Movement written by David C. Carter and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the passage of sweeping civil rights and voting rights legislation in 1964 and 1965, the civil rights movement stood poised to build on considerable momentum. In a famous speech at Howard University in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared that victory in the next battle for civil rights would be measured in "equal results" rather than equal rights and opportunities. It seemed that for a brief moment the White House and champions of racial equality shared the same objectives and priorities. Finding common ground proved elusive, however, in a climate of growing social and political unrest marked by urban riots, the Vietnam War, and resurgent conservatism. Examining grassroots movements and organizations and their complicated relationships with the federal government and state authorities between 1965 and 1968, David C. Carter takes readers through the inner workings of local civil rights coalitions as they tried to maintain strength within their organizations while facing both overt and subtle opposition from state and federal officials. He also highlights internal debates and divisions within the White House and the executive branch, demonstrating that the federal government's relationship to the movement and its major goals was never as clear-cut as the president's progressive rhetoric suggested. Carter reveals the complex and often tense relationships between the Johnson administration and activist groups advocating further social change, and he extends the traditional timeline of the civil rights movement beyond the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Book Faith and the Zombie

Download or read book Faith and the Zombie written by Simon Bacon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themes of faith and religion have been threaded through popular representations of the zombie so often that they now seem inextricably linked. Whether as mindless servants to a Vodou Bokor or as evidence of the impending apocalypse, the ravenous undead have long captured something of society's relationships with spirituality, religion and belief. By the start of the 21st century, religious beliefs are as varied as the many manifestations of the zombie itself, and both themes intersect with various ideological, environmental and even post-human concerns. This book surveys the various modern religious associations in zombie media. Some characters believe that the undead are part of God's plan, others theorize that the environment might be saving itself or that zombies might be predicting life and hybridity beyond human existence. Timely and important, this work is a meditation on how faith might not just be a forerunner to the apocalypse, but the catalyst to new kinds of life beyond it.

Book The Image of Modern Man in T S Eliot s Poetry

Download or read book The Image of Modern Man in T S Eliot s Poetry written by Mariwan Nasradeen Hasan Barzinji and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Image of Modern Man in T. S. Eliot's Poetry The book , presents an original understanding of The Image of Modern Man in T. S. Eliots complex and difficult poems in an easy and understandable way. Eliots vision of the Modern Man and the modern world is depicted throughout Eliots most well-known poems. Eliot was criticized by some critics for the quality of his work. The aim of this book is to show what an excellent and successful writer he is, to reveal the value and the contemporaneity of his work. His poetry is highly evaluated for its unique way of depicting the Modern humanity by realizing their problems as well as finding solutions for them. The book is a great help not only for students, but also for researchers as the writer has spent much time in reading Eliots Poems. He has also written an ample introduction about modernism, modernity, modern literature and modern poetry, which might be enough to understand the rise of modern poetry. ... All of Eliots poems especially The Waste Land has presented readers with all the aspects of the modern life. Life is depicted as a mirror, broken and shattered into pieces as it is clear in the different parts of the poem. Eliot unlike many poets did not leave the modern man lost in despair but he finds them, their peace of mind by having a true and stable faith as well as their turning to God. The only solution for the entire problems of modern man is to turn to God and neglect the world that completely occupied them spiritually. ...Modern man has lost his values especially women by only looking after children, many of them turned to prostitution because they did not have any source of income; therefore, they used that as a way to earn money to maintain life. These are the characteristics of the modern city, which are shared by all the countries, especially Europe. Eliot insists on the necessity of turning from world to God. He believed that God can solve their problems, because man or any other earthly power could not change that gloomy and aimless life, which modern man complained against.
