Book The Baltimore Ohio Railroad in Maryland

Download or read book The Baltimore Ohio Railroad in Maryland written by David Shackelford and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporated in 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was one of America's first railroads, and Maryland was its heart and soul. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's (B&O) creation was a tangible symbol of the Industrial Revolution, representing commerce and progress to towns along its route. Its headquarters and operations, centered in Baltimore, provided years of economic growth for the port city. This book contains images of well-known stations in Maryland, including Ellicott City Station, Gaithersburg Station, Camden Station, and the Mount Clare Shops--a self-contained industrial city, now home to the B&O Railroad Museum. Some stations still exist and are home to small museums or restaurants; others no longer stand, but images of them will remind even the casual historian of a time when railroads were a part of everyday life in America. Take a step back in time and revisit the sites, stations, and trains of the B&O that were once part of everyday life in Maryland and remember the glory of a bygone era.

Book The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in West Virginia

Download or read book The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in West Virginia written by Bob Withers and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-09-26 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1827, a group of Baltimore capitalists feared their city would be left out of the lucrative East Coast-to-Midwest trade that other eastern cities were developing; thus, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was chartered. Political pressure kept the B&O out of Pennsylvania at first, and so track crews headed for what is now West Virginia, building mountainous routes with torturous grades to Wheeling and Parkersburg. Eventually the B&O financed and acquired a spiderweb of branch lines that covered much of the northern and central parts of the Mountain State. This book takes a close look at the line's locomotives, passenger and freight trains, structures, and, most importantly, its people who endeared their company to generations of travelers, shippers, and small Appalachian communities.

This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Description of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad In presenting to the public this brief historical sketch and compendium of facts relating to the diversified career of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company, - from the period of its first organization in 1827, to its completion in 1853, - the author has been influenced solely by a desire to place on record a comprehensive narrative of events, redounding to the honor of the State of Maryland and the City of Baltimore, and reflecting immortal credit upon the intelligence, perseverance, and unflagging energy of those alike who originated, perfected, and have carried to a successful issue this great national enterprise. Maryland has the honor of having been the first State in the Union to incorporate a Company for the construction of a Rail Road, - she was also the first to devote the public resources to the support of the system, - "a system that has given to the people of the United States, an identity of feeling, a harmony of interests, and a facility of social intercourse which has bound them together as one great family." Maryland may now also boast of having completed one of the longest and most magnificent Rail Roads in the world, and although more limited in her territory than many of her sister States, she has thus secured the most direct channel through which the interchange of commodities and travel, between the Eastern and the Western States, will be mainly carried on, and which will elevate her chief City still higher in wealth, commercial activity, and national importance.
