Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition of The Book of Fallacies is the first that follows Bentham's own structure for the work, and includes a great deal of material, both in terms of the fallacies themselves and the illustrative matter, that previous versions of the work have omitted. The fallacies that concerned Bentham were not logical errors of the sort identified by Aristotle, or commonplace misunderstandings of matters of fact, but arguments deployed in political debate, in particular in the British Parliament, in order to prevent reform. Bentham not only identified, described, and criticized the fallacious arguments in question, which were all characterized by their irrelevancy, but explained the sinister interests that led politicians to employ them and their supporters to accept them. By exposing these political fallacies, Bentham hoped to prevent their employment in future, and thereby to place political debate on its only proper ground, namely considerations drawn from the principle of utility.

Book Bad Motherpuckers Volume One

Download or read book Bad Motherpuckers Volume One written by Lili Valente and published by Self Taught Ninja. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three HOT Standalone hockey rom coms including… HOT AS PUCK The things I want to do to my sweet, kindergarten-teaching, mitten-crocheting best friend Libby Collins are ten different kinds of wrong. Maybe twenty. But I'm a firm believer in teaching by example, and by the end of our first sex lesson, we've graduated to a hands on approach to her education: my hands all over her, her hands all over me, and her hot mouth melting beneath mine as I prove to her there isn't a damned thing wrong with the way she kisses. Give me a month, and I'll transform Libby from wall flower to wall banger, and ensure she's confident enough to seduce any guy she wants. Problem is... the only guy I want her seducing is me. SEXY MOTHERPUCKER Laura Collins is the last woman I should be thinking about taking in the back seat of my car, in the woods behind my in-laws' house, or in a hotel room where we're sharing one very small, very squeaky bed. I need a steady, stable influence for my daughter, not a fling with this too wild, too young, too impulsive red head. So what if she's beautiful and intense and passionate and has the biggest heart I've ever known? I don't want to fall in love. I really don't. The whole "pretend girlfriend" thing was supposed to solve my problems, buy me a little more time. But when it comes to Laura? Hell, maybe I'm just not cut out for faking it. PUCK AHOLIC I hate my new roommate… And I want to do dirty, delicious things to her in that swing she installed that we both know has nothing to do with aerial yoga. Neither of which is good, considering Diana Daniels is my NHL team captain's little sister, and he will break my face if I'm not a perfect gentleman. I try to be. Really, I do. But Diana has all sorts of Jedi mind tricks to make a man obsessed with getting her into bed, and I'm not gonna lie--I fall for every single one of them. Especially the one where she warns me not to fall for her.

Book Demian

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hermann Hesse
  • Publisher : Algora Publishing
  • Release : 2022-03-03
  • ISBN : 1628944846
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Demian written by Hermann Hesse and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demian is generally considered to be Hermann Hesse's finest novel. This classic is a landmark in literature, a standout among traditional stories of the journey to the self. This fresh new translation faithfully reproduces the lively style and impact of Hesse's original writing. The work is autobiographical, and as Hal Hager has observed, "In Demian, published under the pseudonym of its protagonist and narrator, Emil Sinclair, Hesse succeeded for the first time in bringing together in a coherent fashion his main concerns and beliefs." It is a cure for nihilism, Facebook, and self-despair.

Book Singularity and Transnational Poetics

Download or read book Singularity and Transnational Poetics written by Birgit Mara Kaiser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade ‘singularity’ has been a prominent term in a broad range of fields, ranging from philosophy to literary and cultural studies to science and technology studies. This volume intervenes in this broad discussion of singularity and its various implications, proposing to explore the term for its specific potential in the study of literature. Singularity and Transnational Poetics brings together scholars working in the fields of literary and cultural studies, translation studies, and transnational literatures. The volume’s central concern is to explore singularity as a conceptual tool for the comparative study of contemporary literatures beyond national frameworks, and by implication, as a tool to analyze human existence. Contributors explore how singularity might move our conceptions of cultural identity from prevailing frameworks of self/other toward the premises of being as ‘singular plural’. Through a close reading of transnational literatures from Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and South Africa, this collection offers a new approach to reading literature that will challenge a reader’s established notions of identity, individuality, communicability, and social cohesion.

Boris Alekseyev aka The Fighter leads the Izmaylovskaya Gang (Russian Mafia). Meng Chang aka Lee is the leader of the Tongs (Chinese Mafia). Hector Lopez aka Yankee is the Colombian Cartel's main man in the USA. Mark Owens aka Apollo rules Harlem. Johnny Angel who women love and men fear is the traditional Italian Mafia captain and core connection to the other leaders. Their bonds from childhood are unshakable. Book Explaining Knowledge

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rodrigo Borges
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-11-24
  • ISBN : 0191036838
  • Pages : 431 pages

Download or read book Explaining Knowledge written by Rodrigo Borges and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gettier Problem has shaped most of the fundamental debates in epistemology for more than fifty years. Before Edmund Gettier published his famous 1963 paper, it was generally presumed that knowledge was equivalent to true belief supported by adequate evidence. Gettier presented a powerful challenge to that presumption. This led to the development and refinement of many prominent epistemological theories, for example, defeasibility theories, causal theories, conclusive-reasons theories, tracking theories, epistemic virtue theories, and knowledge-first theories. The debate about the appropriate use of intuition to provide evidence in all areas of philosophy began as a debate about the epistemic status of the 'Gettier intuition'. The differing accounts of epistemic luck are all rooted in responses to the Gettier Problem. The discussions about the role of false beliefs in the production of knowledge are directly traceable to Gettier's paper, as are the debates between fallibilists and infallibilists. Indeed, it is fair to say that providing a satisfactory response to the Gettier Problem has become a litmus test of any adequate account of knowledge even those accounts that hold that the Gettier Problem rests on mistakes of various sorts. This volume presents a collection of essays by twenty-six experts, including some of the most influential philosophers of our time, on the various issues that arise from Gettier's challenge to the analysis of knowledge. Explaining Knowledge sets the agenda for future work on the central problem of epistemology.

Book The Half Life of Happiness

Download or read book The Half Life of Happiness written by John Casey and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the winner of the 1989 National Book Award (for Spartina), a major new novel--wise, sad, and richly comic--about the meltdown of a marriage against the backdrop of a gloriously awful congressional campaign. Charlottesville, Virginia, 1978: Mike is a successful forty-something lawyer, a onetime congressional staffer who's had it with Washington; Joss, his wife, is a filmmaker. They're Virginia liberals with a clan of close-knit friends--a bright, edgy, flirty, games-playing group, spinning like a Catherine wheel around Mike and Joss. But the sparks that fly between the two are getting hotter and more dangerous, as Joss' restlessness turns to impatience and then anger. When one of the group introduces them all to the woman he wants to marry, things suddenly explode--this new arrival and Joss fall passionately in love, and their whole world careens out of control. What ensues is tragicomedy, as Mike tries to allay his rage and misery by letting himself get sucked into a trial run for a seat in Congress. He wants to be a hero to someone; instead he becomes the unwitting star of a political farce. Meantime, Joss is struggling with her new life, and their two young daughters (who form a lovingly unmerciful Greek chorus commenting on the action) have to navigate a turmoil in which one parent is a public joke and the other a private scandal. Rarely has the undoing of love been chronicled with such large-hearted humanity.
