Book The Sugar Barons Daughter

Download or read book The Sugar Barons Daughter written by Loveleen Kacker and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2007 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Feisty Novel of Ambition and Lust Nagina, the beautiful and ruthless daughter of Rai Sahab Hukam Singh, is driven only by a consuming passion to inherit her father's sugar mill in Majhauli. Anmol, son of the loyal family retainer, is driven only by his consuming passion for her... Hoping that his special equation with the sugar cane farmers will help her win control over the sugar mill, the sultry Nagina lures her ex-flame Anmol out of middle-class Lajpat Nagar torpor with the promise of rekindling the relationship they shared fourteen years ago. So, largely indifferent to the raging agitation brought on by the Mandal Commission Report, and insensitive to the havoc they are creating in the lives of those around them, Nagina and Anmol set about pursuing their personal agendas. Anmol deserts his family and finds himself embroiled deeper and deeper in the caste-ridden politics of the sugar industry while Nagina plays every underhand trick in the book to stay on top...Set in part against the riot-hit streets of New Delhi in the early Nineties and then in the villages of the sugar belt of western UP, where feudal sugar lords continue to brazenly exploit the poor, Loveleen Kacker's novel is as much a comment on the entrenched mindsets of India's exploiters and exploited as a feisty novel of ambition and lust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American business has always had deep roots in community. For over a century, the country looked to philanthropic industrialists to finance hospitals, parks, libraries, civic programs, community welfare and disaster aid. Worker-centered capitalists saw the workplace as an extension of the community and poured millions into schools, job training and adult education. Often criticized as welfare capitalism, this system was unique in the world. Lesser known capitalists like Peter Cooper and George Westinghouse led the movement in the mid- to late 1800s. Westinghouse, in particular, focused on good wages and benefits. Robber barons like George Pullman and Andrew Carnegie would later succeed in corrupting the higher benefits of worker-centered capitalism. This is the story of those accomplished Americans who sought to balance the accumulation of wealth with communal responsibility.

Book Merchants Barons Sellers and Suits

Download or read book Merchants Barons Sellers and Suits written by Christa Mahalik and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merchants, Barons, Sellers and Suits: The Changing Images of the Businessman through Literature originally began as a conversation about a hybrid course at Quinnipiac University. Its purpose was to take an online English course for non-traditional business majors and create a theme that would be relevant to the business world. Being given the task to create this course from the ground up was exciting and intriguing. There turned out to be a lot more material that could be used for this theme than previously thought. To gauge the temperature of the topic, a panel was set up with the theme of businessmen (or women) and their changing image through literature. At the 2009 NeMLA (Northeast Modern Language Association) conference in Boston, the panel was held and many ideas, such as some of the ones presented in this book, were discussed. A secondary theme evolved out of the construction of the first. Participants discussed the environment as a catalyst in the change of “what a person actually thinks a businessman (or woman) looks like.” Many of these images were formed based upon pop culture, such as the traveling salesman in the Looney Tunes cartoons who sells brushes door to door and hails from Walla Walla, Washington. Others were based on the images read about in books, such as Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman. The essays included in this volume, presented by doctoral candidates and scholars from across a range of geographical regions and disciplines, result in a collection that investigates the idea of the changing image of the businessman throughout literature both in America and in Europe. The arrangement of the collection is a comparative timeline allowing the changing images of business to evolve with each essay.
